clearing the diamond at E&O Tower, southbound to Port Maitland.
During my one plus year with the TH&B I did 12
trips on the East Local. We went on duty at Aberdeen yard mid-morning
around 9am. Usually it was a four person crew, Engineer, Conductor and
two Brakemen although sometimes we did have a Fireman, making a five man
crew. Trips varied in length from 8 hours to 12 hours or so. Departing
Aberdeen we would stop at Smithville and do some switching there and
then exit the Welland sub for the Dunnville sub and the 19 mile jaunt to
Port Maitland. Arriving at Port Maitland we would have a quick lunch
break and then start the heavy switching at the ERCO fertilizer plants.
We would eventually finish our work and building our train and then head
back to Smithville and eventually Aberdeen yard in Hamilton. Sometimes
we would take another break in Dunnville at the local greasy spoon
restaurant.
