Does anybody know how the crew fared and survived this mess ??

Ouch…
I don’t have the specifics of injuries but I can say that there were no fatalities.
And yes, train 387 at MP 37.6 Grimsby Subdivision on 5Aug1978, with locos 9404-4523-4524-4573. Encountered an open switch and struck the car(s) you see here, namely those boxes loaded with plywood, or OSB, whatever it is.
4573 was retired on 27Jan1981 after having been picked apart for usable components.
She had 1,727,000 miles on her, and was only driven by a little old lady on Sundays (LOL).
