The VIA Venture sets are now making a trip to Toronto six days a week. Running a few minutes late, 2301 and 2202 cross over to the north track at Liverpool with Toronto-bound train 41.

2022 was not a good year for the York-Durham Heritage Railway: the continued pandemic, a tornado, and significant ticket disputes made the year one to forget for the tourist operation. However, from a railfan perspective, the end of 2022 also saw the railway borrow 1603, the ONR's rebuilt GMDD GP9, to alleviate the YDHR's power shortage. Seen at Uxbridge, 1603 has been reunited with 1310, a former ONR MLW RS-3 which left the ONR roster back in 1985. After a stint with Abitibi Price, the 1310 arrived in Uxbridge in 1997. The loan of 1603 brings the YDHR's roster of ONR equipment temporarily to six: 1603, 1310, and four passenger cars, two of which are visible in the left of this image behind the MOW crane and the yard's ever-watchful owl.

So close and yet so far. TTC streetcar 4458 sits in the siding at Whitby with two CP idler flats, still more than 20 miles from Toronto. My best guess is that the consist developed a fault and was set out. Amazingly, it sat here for almost three weeks.

I never thought I would see 6-car GO trains on the Lakeshore East Corridor. Back in March, I was wondering how long GO could operate during rush hour using L12 sets that were standing-room only. But then the world changed. GO ridership plummeted 90% almost overnight and service was cut back to hourly. Here we are in mid-July and I finally got up the courage to head back trackside. GO 659 heads past the layover at Henry Street with an L6 set. While some of the rush hour trains are getting longer again and more trains are running, most Lakeshore East services are still L6. How long until the return of L10 and L12 sets running every 15 minutes? Will that ever happen again?

Completed last year, the new GO Whitby Rail Maintenance Facility is now operational. Here, various combinations of cab cars and bi-levels wait for maintenance in the facility's main shops. Portions of this enormous facility were open to the public as part of the 2019 Doors Open Whitby.

Once in a while, a Doors Open event has something for the railfan. This year, Metrolinx opened the new Whitby Rail Maintenance Facility and let visitors see inside the paint shop and main maintenance bays (or at least in the doors). Here, an unidentified MP40 sits in the paint shop awaiting some work.

Nothing says the CP Holiday Train quite like snow and nighttime photography or, if you're east of Toronto, yellow grass and a cloudy afternoon. Nevertheless, the train injects some much-needed colour into the late fall gloom. Despite being closed to vehicular traffic, the wooden bridge still spans the track as the 20th anniversary Holiday Train rolls west towards its next stop in Bowmanville.

Southbound 318 crawls towards the Ramara Road 47 crossing, which splits the Brechin East siding in half. The train waited for a trio of northbounds to pass, a process that took over an hour.

The colours at Cedar Curve on the York-Durham Heritage Railway are changing as a pair of ALCO/MLW units shatter the silence of a quiet Thanksgiving Sunday. With an extra-long consist to accommodate the extra passengers enjoying the fall colours, YDHR 22 and 3612 were both put into service pushing the train towards Stouffville. This operation was very resource-intensive, needing three running crews. The first crew is up in the cab car, the second in 3612 and the third in 22. This was old-school MUing, with radio instructions relayed between the two locomotives as the crews manually notched up and down in tandem.

Reunited? Ex-ONR RS-3 1310 sits with ex-ONR 1408 and 1410 at the Uxbridge Yard on the York-Durham Heritage Railway. Part of the fun of tourist lines is that they can recreate things that never happened in reality. 1310 left the ONR in 1985 and the two cars didn't arrive until 1990.

Through a canyon of tower blocks and trees, a yard transfer crosses over at Osler on its way to the Mactier Sub with 8876 leading CEFX 1037 and CP units 6223 and 9658.

The morning rush hour on the Gardiner is winding down as the equipment for Montreal and Ottawa-bound J train 52 and 62 speeds past the Sunnyside footbridge on its way to Union Station.

With only the lack of snow suggesting that springtime has arrived, the loaded Saskatchewan to New Brunswick potash unit train rolls through Lovekin on a sunny Saturday. Powered by four units - CN 2818 and 3118 up front, 2958 as mid-train DPU, and 2812 on the rear - this is certainly one of the heaviest trains on CN right now (in this part of Canada anyway).

It's nowhere near as spectacular during the day, but here it is: the "ho ho train" (as the RTC called it). Having met 112 at Lovekin, the Holiday Train was running a little late as it approached its stop in Bowmanville. To say it was mid-afternoon on a weekday, the crowd was well over 100 people. I've forgotten how many times I've shot this train in Bowmanville and I really am running out of angles. <br><br>The first time was back in 2007: it was a miserable night, the ground was covered in ice and freezing rain was falling. By the time I had my photos (they were really bad, I've learned a lot in the last decade), my hat was frozen solid with a layer of ice on it! For the past few years, CP have tightened the schedule and Bowmanville is now a daytime stop. The weather this year was very different compared with 2007. No snow, no rain, and double-digit temperatures. It doesn't make for dramatic photographs, but it sure is nicer weather to stand around waiting in.

As the suburban expansion of Toronto continues, even Uxbridge is beginning to change. Thankfully, the view looking north at the Brock St. crossing retains the small-town feel as 101 leads the 2:30 train to Stouffville.

With its number boards removed, CP 5824 sits ON CN's GM lead next to the autorack loading yard in Oshawa. Given its location, I would guess that the SD40-2 is waiting to be moved to the scrapper in Ajax.
