About Warren Schlo
I have been shooting trains (on mainly video) since August of 2010. I'm still learning all about the world of photography, and when I can, I borrow a Nikon D3000 which is what most of these shots are from. All questions and comments are welcome, I try to get back to everyone that I can. Check out my videos here! http://youtube.com/SD402F

![Callout to any railfans in the Greater Sudbury area! I've recently relocated within the district and, while I'm very rarely out searching for trains, I'm trying to figure out some of the local operations better so I'll have better luck when I do go out. I feel like this city oozes potential and hasn't been covered too extensively yet (at least, not online). If there's anyone with current local knowledge or who lives in the area and wants to figure things out with my friend and I, please get in touch! Thanks :)
It's a sunny February Saturday and I've come into the city in search of some rail action with L. It wasn't the most successful day—both of us lack functional scanners at the moment—but considering that handicap, I'm satisfied with our sightings of old Cando and CN geeps presumably awaiting the scrap torch, a 10-hour-late Canadian and tanker train parked on the CN Sudbury Spur. This CP intermodal was a surprise; we were expecting a (north)westbound to come through Romford when the searchlights lit up clear for a (south)eastbound. Unfortunately the late afternoon lighting wasn't on our side for eastbound traffic, but the frosty tail-end remote offered redemption before we called it quits for the day.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/DSC_1919-3-200x150.jpg)

![A light move crosses the reservoir on its way to BIT under the dying rays of the summer sun.
It was an uncharacteristically warm start to November, and the morning began with a spectacular sunrise. On my way home from class I looked at the clouds in the sky and hoped that, just maybe, the sunset would be even half as breathtaking. As soon as I reached my house, I grabbed my camera, tore off on my bike and raced to this spot. The sunset was enough of a treat on its own, so I couldn't believe that my luck could be any better. That's when I heard the distant rumble of these engines coming my way.
I haven't been very active on here lately due to changing interests in my life and being so busy with university, so thanks for welcoming me back for a little while! All the best.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/FinalCNSunset_rs-200x150.jpg)

![Resting at Salford is a marvel of a locomotive, an old relic from the TH&B railway. In preserving the heritage of this unit, president Jeff has refrained from repainting the unit, instead adding minuscule OSR sublettering under the cab. ![Thanks to everyone for the initial info on this train. I decided to take a break from my pre-exam stress by taking a couple friends out to Milton to shoot this train at a new location I scouted. Hopefully they retain their SOO colours for a while longer, but the future always holds uncertainty.
A note on the location, this is a pedestrian walkway that is situated directly on top of the Milton East control point/crossovers, which 242 used right after passing my lens. The bridge was built in mid-late 2013, so it is still relatively new, and with its fantastic view, is definitely a spot I plan on revisiting regularly! Fellow RailPictures.ca contributor Alex Titu was one of the railfans I brought out to shoot this.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/CASOO2014-200x150.jpg)

![The Huron Central shots are done for now. Mr. Mooney will rejoice to hear of the next shortline I'll be covering - the Ontario Southland. They are a good opposite of the HCRY, with a multitude of jobs, a shorter yet more diverse set of track, and best of all, unique power sets. When I went to shoot on this day, the Woodstock job was running an OSR painted 383, and then-fresh 6508 - still in CN heritage paint. Here, they wait for their crew to arrive to take them out for a spin.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/OSR1-200x150.jpg)

![With engineer Tom at the controls, the SMSU glides over the iconic THIS IS INDIAN LAND bridge over the Garden River. The message on the bridge has stood for decades upon decades, and is regularly touched up by members of the local native reserve. Interestingly, at one point in history, some "vandals" changed the message to say "this was indian land"... that was fixed quite quickly.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/HC11-200x150.jpg)

![This is a perfect example of historical innovations that have absolutely no purpose in the present day. Here, HCRY 3012 E leans into a massively superelevated curve west of Bruce Mines. Now that (at the time of photo, unsure of current conditions) the track is operated at a max speed of 10mph through this stretch, this banked curve serves about as much purpose as a freezer in Alert, Nunavut. Hopefully with line upgrades still underway, there will be once again method to the madness on the Webbwood sub.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/HC9-200x150.jpg)

![ Dead end. This is why I don't blindly follow my GPS, the road I was driving on was supposed to intersect with the Webbwood sub at a grade crossing. To be fair, it did, but I don't know if my grandma's little Honda civic (which is as old as me) would have appreciated it. You can see the state of the road in the foreground.
So now the Huron Central's freight, hauled with 3 locomotives sporting the G&W paint that A.W. Mooney *loves* has cleared the town of Bar River and is well on its way. After this spot, it will be well out of the way of civilization for quite some time, before popping up along some cottages on Desbarats Lake, and finally to meet with the greater population in the village of Desbarats along 17. Bragging rights to the first person who can comment the correct pronunciation of that town's name!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Dead-End-200x150.jpg)

![If I had a dollar… After getting my shots of the Huron Central's ballast train, I booted it back out to 17 to catch the 912 underway. I was unsure of their progress at this point, but eventually met them along the highway not too far before this shot, then spun around and raced past the slow freight into position.
Here is the 912 passing the iconic Loonie monument, erected to commemorate the coin's entrance into our Canadian currency system (in 1987). I don't think I've ever seen a train shot yet that involved it, so I felt I needed to get a good capture of it going past! The car was a bit of a pain to have cut off, but you can only zoom so wide, while avoiding poles and keeping both the monument and the train in frame! Lesson learned about parking in your shots for sure.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/HC21-200x150.jpg)

![Taking a brief break from my Huron Central shots to put this up.
Today, I received an email from Bill Miller via the Yahoo FPON group that the BNSFs on this train were still in Toronto yard. About an hour after the shipment tracker reported the third unit as arriving in Obico, I decided to go out to Milton to get a shot of them that wasn't at Lisgar GO - that place hasn't been shot at enough yet!
Unfortunately after leaving my house and clearing off the car, I heard GM's working their way up the grade by my house, so I decided to hammer it west on the 401 to get a shot featuring the farm bridge in Campbellville. While I made it there on time, seconds before I was going to go across, an eastbound solo AC44 powermove rolled through.
The gates stayed down, and this train was quickly approaching, so I just resorted to a gate shot.
I tried to chase this to somewhere in the area west of Guelph Junction, but after slowly passing me they highballed it up to 60 in no time, and when I could finally see them again, they were going faster than me! I decided to then head for home.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/CP-4-200x150.jpg)

![I love this landscape. Minus the hydro poles, it would be perfect. Flat fields, rolling up into low rocky peaks. The ballast train is approaching the village of Bar River; with all 20 cars and both locomotives stretched out in plain view. It's still another hour or so along 10mph track before the train can make it up to a "blistering" 25 mph. Hey, still better than 179 miles of 10mph, like it was only a couple years past.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/HC523-200x150.jpg)

![Rolling along at a mind-numbing 10mph, the eastbound ballast work train is a mile or two out of the tiny town of Bar River, which makes Echo bay (my previous shot) look like a bustling urban center.
They will be in the 10mph zone for track speed for another hour or so, until the restriction is lifted east of Thessalon.
The hope is that with work trains just like this one, the slow orders will gradually diminish, until it's somewhat of a highball (probably around 25)to the crew change at McKerrow.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/HC4-200x150.jpg)

![Cheeky! The Huron Central's road freight power waits at the yard in the Sault.
I wanted to go for a unique angle for this shot, something that you'd likely never see on our "less user-friendly counterpart!"
This loco will lead the eastbound SMSU (or 912, as everyone refers to it as) the next day.
The 912 designation reigns from the time when big brother CP still operated the line.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/HC2-200x150.jpg)
