About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. Prior to being repainted in the QIT scheme, reconditioned coaches for employee transportation to and from the mine site looked like this on their arrival in HSP.

CN 4-8-4 Mountain Type 6218 has deteriorated tremendously over the years it has sat on display in Ft. Erie, ON. The boiler cover has rotted away in several locations exposing the asbestos insulation underneath and the once shiny black paint has dulled to a powdery grey and rust smeared coat. Based on the condition of this once beautiful locomotive, I highly doubt it will ever roll from its current resting place, and will most likely collapse on itself in the years to come. What a shame!

T&NO #503 now sits on a track panel surrounded by dumpsters, track ties, bridge timber, and yet to be installed park benches. Since I last photographed this locomotive in April of 2002 it has been cleaned and repainted to help protect it from the elements. It still sits in an unprotected area at the end of the North Bay, ON station parking lots where vandals have easy access to it with their spray cans. Remnants of ONR's European 'Tee-Train' sit on the ground in a fenced-in compound just a few yards away.

Working closely with the railway has its advantages when you want to get up close and personal with operations. CP 2816 is pulling in to Revelstoke station from the west where it will stop for an inspection and some light maintenance by the on-board crew.

With its boom lowered to the ground, QIT's retired Ohio model DE 300 SPL locomotive crane (s/n 4825) sits idle on a deadend yard track near the Havre St-Pierre terminal. Built in 1965, it had a long career as the ore haulers only locomotive crane. It was replaced by a more modern, and higher capacity American model 850-80 in July of 2003.

While on a trip to commission a new Knox Kershaw KBR925 ballast regulator for KRC, NAES (Canada) Ltd. Sales Manager David Wylie came across this Keewatin Railway Company Ford van. Certainly not your average hi-rail vehicle found on most railways, this one is steel-wheeled and railbound. The maintenance vehicle is equipped with a turntable allowing the crew to reverse direction of the truck so they do not have to travel backwards for any great distances. Note it is connected to a heavy duty 'push car' for transporting track material and/or small power tools. (Photo by David Wylie used with permission).The Keewatin Railway Company (KRC) is a First Nations-owned rail line that operates in Northern Manitoba, between The Pas, and Pukatawagan. The railway company owns the line from Sherritt Junction (interchange with Hudson Bay) to Lynn Lake, about 185 miles (310 km). It currently operates mixed (passenger and freight) services from The Pas to Putakawagan, about 156 miles (251 km), of which 58 miles (93 km) is on the tracks of Hudson Bay Railway KRC started operations on April 1, 2006. The passenger service, formerly operated by VIA Rail Canada, continues under a new operating agreement between Keewatin Railway Company and Via Rail Canada. KRC operates two round trips between Pukatawagan and The Pas each week. Trains carry passengers and freight for the community of Pukatawagan.

This alternate view of the HBRY classic wreck train gives a better indication of the equipment condition. The boarded up window openings in the van, and the slight sway in the boom idler/coach are tell-tale signs of age and neglect. The Industrial Works s/n 4408 160 ton crane built in 1924 appears to be in the best condition of all three pieces of equipment.

The HBRY wreck train is a classic consist made up of equipment directly handed down from the ex-CN Thunder Bay, ON auxilliary. Coach/boom idler HBRY 58116 is looking pretty tired and her back is starting to 'sway'. It won't be long before she 'meets her maker'.

A trio of CN yard grunts sits idling in London's Egerton Street yard waiting for a new crew to get on board. A small maintenance tie gang is changing wood a few tracks over in the middle of several yard tracks so extreme caution is the order of the day with all the yard power and cars moving about.

The relentless pounding of massive locomotives and heavy ore cars demands as few bolted rail joints as possible. When laying new CWR, repairing broken rails, or eliminating bolted rail joints, this mobile flash-butt welder can quickly and economically join two rail ends together in-track to form a seamless string of steel. QNS&L's colourful paint scheme looks great on this piece of high-tech equipment.

In this view from the cab of a piece of MOW equipment, HBRY's 30 m.p.h. main line to Churchill, MB is looking pretty good after a tie gang has rolled through and done its job. The lack of ballast, the tripod pole line, and the dwarfed landscape are very characteristic of this portion of the line. Make sure you packed a lunch because its a long way to anywhere from here! North of Gillam, between Amery and Charlebois, MB, the Hudson Bay Railway main line is not quite as pretty as your normal track structure. In this pic, crews are working hard to replace ties and tamp track to provide a safer and more comfortable ride for both passengers and cargo alike. The only way in or out of this portion of the line is by rail. The roads stop just outside of Gillam. The vegetation continues to get shorter, thinner, and more sparse as you get closer to Churchill. TRT 702 is fully rebuilt, freshly painted, and ready to begin service on the newly formed Tshiuetin Rail Transportation railway. 702 was coupled to TRT 701 and three refurbished coach cars in QNS&L's Sept-Iles, QC yard waiting for a call to duty on this dull October afternoon in 2005.

[editors note: this is a rarely seen Steam locomotive purchased for scrap but saved instead - accepted due to relative rarity] Built in 1928 at CP's Angus shops, CP 3101 and sister 3100 were the only two 4-8-4 Northerns ever built and owned by CP (while CN rostered more than 200 of these monsters). She was converted from coal fired to oil fired at CP's Ogden shop in 1956 a little more than a year before being retired from service. Nicely restored and sitting on display with a heavyweight coach and an old caboose, 3101 saw service from 1928 until October of 1957. Photo by David Wylie and submitted with permission.

QNS&L 64 is due for a little primer and paint as evidenced by this November 13, 2007 photo. The double exhaust stacked caboose was sitting on the van track at the car shop in Sept-Iles on this dreary and overcast day.

Cartier 23 stands on guard at the Port-Cartier locomotive shop on this dull and overcast November afternoon. While not new, the locomotive shows no signs of its hard use hsuling heavy ore trains.
