![BCOL 4646 accelerates on its way out of Bowmanville in the lead of 108, a "one-unit wonder" without the wonder as the train was noticeably shorter than I would expect. A warm golden sunlight was shining on it through a layer of wildfire smoke from out west. Recently either workers from CN or a railfan armed with a weed whacker bothered to trim the grass on the west side of Bennett Road, making this shot possible again.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/DSC_0029-200x150.jpg)

![This spot just west of Liverpool along the first stretch of the York Sub was my favourite place to watch trains as a kid, as I grew up in a house just a short walk from here. Back during the early 2000's you could still see some second generation diesels in their last years of leading mainline freight trains. I was too young at the time to get any pictures, besides one crappy shot of an ex-MoPac SD40-2, and suddenly I lost my chance when my family moved us two towns away a decade or so ago. I hadn't thought to come back until late last year, which is when I snapped this photo of CN Q147 starting up the hill on its way to Toronto. Winter was near and it's apparent with the long shadows cast by the train despite it only being just after 1pm!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/DSC_0940-200x150.jpg)

![After slowing down to as much as 25 miles per hour while descending the steep grades of the York Subdivision, CN Q108 picks up speed before joining the Kingston Subdivision. The Liverpool searchlights are still standing tall as of this post, despite its future replacements being in place since the end of last year. I thought I had lost my chance by waiting this long to go back there, so I'm glad I was able to get this shot of them in time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/DSC_0797-200x150.jpg)

![After waiting at Whitby for a VIA train to pass, CN 149 is the first of three halted freight trains to begin moving again. In the lead is 2128, one of the ex-CNW Dash 8s to receive the 15th anniversary logo on the side. Unfortunately, RTC made the last-minute decision to route it on the south track which prevented me from getting it in the shot! Still quite happy with the way this turned out as the sun decided to peek out at the last second.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/DSC_0033-200x150.jpg)

![It's no secret that CP's Belleville Subdivision has gotten significantly quieter over the last decade or two. I tend not to visit it for that reason, but whenever I ride my bike down to the CN Kingston Subdivision, I'll inevitably cross the Belleville Sub at Cochrane Street here in Whitby. When I cross the bridge I'll check if the signals at either end of the siding are lit, which they rarely are, but on very rare occasion they will be! This was one of those times, I had just made it to the bridge and I noticed the signal at Whitby West was red indicating a train was occupying the track just beyond it. I waited a few moments, and before long I saw the headlights come around the bend. The train passed by at a particularly slow pace, eventually stopping somewhere between the Whitby siding and the Oshawa siding before continuing on its way about 10 minutes later. Clean AC44 rebuild 8154 heavily contrasts with 9360, which I presume had recently been used in coal service. A few cars back, there's a dimensional load in the form of one Bombardier Flexity streetcar.

This was the same week as some particularly bad wildfires on the west coast. The smoke had made its way here in the upper atmosphere, creating a haze in the sky and somewhat muting the brightness of the sun. This is easily my favourite weather conditions for photography, as it maintains the light while reducing any harsh reflections from glass or metallic surfaces. All the while, the colours of the trees were starting to noticeably change in some areas which significantly brightened the colour palette of the landscape. A very unique day to be out with my camera, that's for sure!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/DSC_0357-200x150.jpg)

![Besides using this website, I'll often use Google Earth to find new places to photograph trains. It's become a valuable tool of mine to plan my shots ahead of time. In this particular instance I found a pair of old wooden bridges in Wesleyville that carry Stacey Road over the parallel CN Kingston Subdivision and CP Belleville Subdivision. Sadly, Google's 2018 satellite imagery hadn't reflected the destruction of the Belleville Sub bridge yet, which I discovered on my first visit in the fall of 2020. I later heard from friends that its removal could be attributed to a massive hole that developed in the middle of the bridge. Now that the remaining bridge serves no real purpose I fear this will spell its end, similar to what happened at nearby Nichols Road years ago. Needless to say, I felt I had to get some shots in at this location while I could.

I returned about a week later when the fall colours were at their peak, which I think made this rather unremarkable location significantly better. A grove of trees on the left had decided to become some of the brightest orange I'd seen all season, so I went a little out of my way to include that in the shot. Funny enough, it almost perfectly matches the paint scheme of the CN locomotives. The train is Q147, which had only been running for about a month or two at that point.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/DSC_0442-200x150.jpg)

![There's a story behind every photograph, and the one behind this photo of mine never ceases to get a laugh out of me. I was at Newtonville Road with my buddy Cam, not expecting to see much but we stuck around for most of the day just in case. Cam looks at his phone, and reads a message from his friend in Cobourg saying there's an SD40-2 leader heading our way. The thing about this spot is getting from one bridge to the other, CN to CP and vice versa, requires a fair bit of walking (or running). We were camped out at the CN bridge, and against our better judgement we chose to wait there thinking this train was further away. Spoiler alert: it wasn't. Within five minutes Cam turns away and goes silent, then yells "Hey, I think I see it!". Of course, if Cam can see the train from here, it's already pretty close. We're both running at full speed to get to the other bridge in time. Not even halfway there and we hear it blow the horn for the Lancaster Road grade crossing, and only now do we realize how close it is and that we might not make it in time. Somehow, we managed to get there just before it crossed the tree line and we were able to snap a few photos before it passed us. This train came with Central Maine & Quebec 9011, an SD40-2F of CP heritage, trailing second. Throughout 2020, these engines made appearances all over Ontario. As the former CMQ track was being upgraded to CP standards, ballast trains were regularly going back and forth between there and Sudbury. This is one of those trains, swelled with several other freight cars and MOW equipment it picked up in Smiths Falls. Having missed out on seeing these locomotives pull mainline trains ten or more years ago, it was nice getting this chance to capture them in action.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/DSC_0178-200x150.jpg)

![In situations where the power of L516 is just one engine, it's often that it'll just get turned around in Belleville to bring the return trip, L517, back to Toronto. After all, there's a perfectly good wye for them to use. For whatever reason that didn't happen on this particular day. Having brought 516 into Belleville the previous night, CN 5777 ended up leading 517 in reverse at track speed all the way to Toronto. Truly a sight to behold, and one reminiscent of the days when long hood forward was the norm. Just a few moments before I took this shot I heard the crew of 376, which passed me earlier, poke fun at 517's unusual setup over the radio. Something along the lines of "Lookin' good, but I think you're facing the wrong way". I couldn't help but chuckle at that once I saw 517 round the bend.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/DSC_0298-200x150.jpg)

![CN 2141 clatters across the turnout as it approaches Oshawa from the east. The train is E271, which predominantly handles automobile traffic but as seen here can also pull containers from time to time. Over the last few months CN has been putting an unusually high number of these endangered Dash 8 locomotives in the lead of trains on the Kingston Subdivision, and I'll continue to take full advantage of that while I can.
The pair of tracks on the right were once part of a yard that occupied all the open space between the mainline and the track furthest right. It's largely disappeared over the last few years with the closure of the Oshawa GM plant, but it was usually empty for nearly a decade prior to that. Now that it's been announced that Oshawa GM will be reopening, it's hard to say whether this yard and the others scattered around the plant will be used again. I hope that's the case, or at the very least I hope I get to photograph some new automotive trains here in the future.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/DSC_0067-200x150.jpg)
