Newly built Orinoco Mining SD38-2TC 1048 is seen at CN’s MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. The unit was on route from the GMDD plant in London to the AMF facility in Montreal, Quebec for contract painting. This was a mining railroad in Venezuela, that had eight units manufactured and painted in Canada, which were loaded on a ship in Halifax during June of that year to reach their destination.

CP GP9u 8238 with three other units is pictured leading an eastbound departing Lambton yard in Toronto, Ontario. The train is on the North Toronto Subdivision about to cross the West Toronto diamonds.

During a spring evening, the shadows are growing long as the westbound Road Railer (Train 529) with GP38-2 3123 leading is viewed crossing Clyde Road on the Galt Subdivision. The train is approaching the east siding switch at Killean, which at that time was still used regularly for meets.

CN 422 passes Stuart Street Yard in Hamilton, Ontario as CN GP9RM’s 4116, 7052 and 7016 prepare to switch out another cut of cars in the yard.

CN caboose 79783 sits amongst the ever-growing weeds and other brush at CN’s Stuart Street Yard in Hamilton, Ontario. This caboose and some other aging equipment had sat stored here behind the shop for many years.

HATX GP40-2 515 is seen with CP GP9u 8247 at CP’s Toronto Yard preparing to head to the diesel shop. At the time, CP had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly expanding mid-90’s lease fleet. GP40-2 515, was former Boston & Maine 311, which later went on to become Ontario Northland Railway 2200 in 2005.

An evening thunderstorm has just cleared the Denfield Road bridge area at Hyde Park, Ontario and its remnants produced a rainbow over the CN Strathroy Subdivision as it continued to move into London. The timing was impeccable as VIA Rail #75 with 6405 is viewed rounding the curve approaching the bridge with several photographers there to capture the moment.

CN GP9RM 4132 leads the 15:30 Kitchener Job by the old St. Jacobs Farmers Market stock pens approaching King Street in north Waterloo, Ontario. The job has one tank car for Sulco in Elmira on the Waterloo Spur.

It’s been more than three decades since I photographed CN 7500 working the hump at MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. Now in 2024, those assignments are held by SD40u’s and SD40-2(W)’s, which would have been busy operating on priority mainline trains back in 1994. Man, how the times have changed during a pleasant June evening as SD40u 6020, GP9 Slug 250 and SD40-2(W) 5298 are viewed approaching Rutherford Road with another cut of cars to be sorted over the hump at MacMillan Yard.

Freshly repaired and repainted CN GP38-2 7500 and YBU-4m yard slug 512 are viewed working the MacMillan Yard hump in Vaughn, Ontario with another set of power. The year prior both 7500 and 512 were involved in a derailment at MacMillan Yard and received extensive damage. One year later and both units were back working with 7500 adorned in the new CN livery that the company had applied to their four-axle units, minus the CNNA map.

A CP westbound train is heading through Milton, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision viewed from the hillside of the CN Halton Subdivision. The consist included CP SD40-2 5722 and HATX GP40-2 512, which is former Boston & Maine 300. At the time, CP had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly expanding mid-90’s lease fleet.

A beautiful summer afternoon finds Rail Link (RLK) GP9-4 4001 stored at Goderich-Exeter Railway’s shop in Goderich, Ontario after being taken out of service earlier in the year. Fast forward, almost one year later and the historic former Southern Pacific GP9-4 still sits in Goderich awaiting a future disposition.

With more units than cars, CN L540 is viewed approaching Stirling Avenue in Kitchener, Ontario on the Huron Park Spur as it heads to the interchange with CPKC on the Huron Park Spur where the crew will lift and set-off. L540 was powered by GP38-2’s 4726, 4732, 4725 and had GP38-2’s 4902 and 7524 on the rear. The latter two units were just along for the ride as they weren’t running and were being sent back to MacMillan Yard in Toronto. July 13, 2023.

During a spring evening after completing their work, CN 421’s crew had to wait for the 15:30 Kitchener Job to return to the yard with their lift of newly built automotive frames from the Budd plant in Kitchener. Knowing they had some ample time to wait, they departed the yard light power down the siding towards King Street for some dinner options. The units included; CN GP40-2L(W) 9505, C-630M 2038 and an SD40-2(W). The power crossed King Street and stopped behind the plaza, that featured a Tim Hortons, Subway and a McDonalds across the street. At the time the siding extended even further west towards Park Street, however this portion was rarely used as most trains exited it at King Street through the cross-overs.

So pictured here is 421’s power in the siding with the iconic Epton factory and its water tower in the background. Also, several other factories can be observed, showing-off Kitchener’s once vibrant industrial past. To the right of 9505 is the Guelph Subdivision mainline with another small siding track and the very far track is the Huron Park Spur. Today this is the location of the GO Transit layover facility and the plaza where the crew went that night is completely gone.
