An afternoon lull after some morning VIA and CN traffic at Snider yields some action on the Barrie GO line. Here, GO Transit MP40PH-3C 628 brings up the rear of afternoon train #6915, heading north on the Newmarket Sub over the York Sub flyover at Snider. It's been a number of years since the nearby neighbourhoods in suburban Thornhill and Concord have had to hear the regular clatter of trains across the interlocking diamonds that were once at this location for decades. In a few minutes, southbound GO train #6916 coming down from Rutherford GO station will put in an appearance. <br><br> <i>Note: photo taken while above adjacent property and zoomed in, complying with all Transport Canada drone regulations for appropriate RPAS micro drone weight class.</i>

Maybe someone can place this photo location:<br><br>Former Canadian Pacific Railway steam engines 136 (4-4-0) and 1057 ("D10" class 4-6-0), now with the Ontario Rail Association and lettered for the Credit Valley Railway, operate on a two-day ORA fantrip from Toronto to Owen Sound and back. Here on the morning of the second day, the two steamers are showing off their stuff as they pile on the smoke during a run-by in front of the fall foliage at an unknown location (likely outside of Owen Sound), at the beginning of their return trip south back to Toronto.<br><br>This photo's a bit of a mystery, as I haven't found a fantrip itinerary showing stops/runbys of this trip, and doing some historical research via old aerial imagery didn't turn up many potential spots. The slide numbering suggests it was taken sometime before the runby at Markdale. Dashing through the falling snow and kicking up a trail of the white stuff behind, CN M636 2316 leads a sister M636, a C630M, and some GP40 widecabs on train #432, heading timetable west on the Grimsby Sub bearing down on Battlefield Creek (near Lake Avenue North) in Stoney Creek. <br><br> An errant dog, possibly belonging to the photographer Bill McArthur (or another spectator present) heads the same way, likely wise or scared enough of the barking MLW and GMD power rapidly advancing to make a hasty retreat back to their owner. <br><br> <i>Bill McArthur photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Canadian Pacific MLW S3 6550, sporting a pair of white extra flags, comes off the CP Canpa Sub with a short local job entering CN's Oakville Sub at the Canpa interlocking (note the brick Canpa tower in the background, governing CN and CP traffic). CP had a longstanding agreement with CN for running rights over the Oakville Sub between downtown Toronto (Bathurst St./Cabin D) and Hamilton Junction, and CP locals often came from West Toronto/Lambton Yard area down the Canpa to work some of the joint-section industries along the Oakville Sub, as well as interchange cars with CN at their Mimico Yard (the trailing steel CN ice reefer and 40' boxcar might be interchange traffic for CN). <br><br> It took a bit of love to coax some colour and contrast back into this old faded Eddie Blacks colour slide. The very first new EMD/GMD SD40-2 unit for CP Rail, 5565, sits in sparkling action red paint outside the Alyth Yard diesel shop in Calgary, Alberta. Delivered to CP on February 16th 1972, 5565 was less than a month old when this photo was taken, and possibly on its first maiden voyage out west. GP9 8611 in older maroon & grey script paint sits in the background.<br><br>CP 5565 was part of the first order of CP SD40-2's, 5565-5588, built at GMD's London, Ontario assembly plant and delivered in February-March 1972. They were numbered above CP's SD40 series (5500-5564), and the new "Dash 2" model featured a number of improvements on the earlier SD40 design (that CP had had teething problems with). Impressed with their reliability, they became CP's main 3000-horsepower 6-axle road power across much of the system for decades, with CP eventually accumulating over 500 new and secondhand units (CP was the third-largest SD40-2 owner, behind BN and UP).<br><br>CP 5565 was retired and sold to Progress Rail in 2007, eventually falling off the radar (possibly scrapped or stored out of service somewhere).<br><br><i>Doug Wingfield photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

VIA to Owen Sound? Close: in a rare occurrence, one of CP's <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=48156><b>leased VIA F40PH-2 units</b></a> found its way onto The Moonlight, and made a trip up the Owen Sound Sub north to Owen Sound! CP GP38-2 3041 leads VIA F40PH-2D 6449, six Indusmin cylindrical covered hoppers, and van 434731 as they enter the Owen Sound city limits at the north end of town just after 11am (around the area of East Bayshore Rd & 3rd Ave). <br><br> CP leased a handful of VIA F40 units in 1994-1995 to help with their ongoing power shortage, and they typically operated around the southern Ontario area and on Windsor-Toronto-Montreal freights, usually with other CP units and leasers due to their higher-speed passenger gearing not being optimal for freight service. <br><br> Icing on the cake at this time was CP's operations over the Owen Sound Sub between Orangeville to Owen Sound were on borrowed time, and only had a few more months of operation left before the line was abandoned (the final train departed Owen Sound in October 1995). <br><br> <i>Peter Jobe photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

TTC PCC 4480 (A7-class, blt CC&F 1949) pops out from the under-construction Queen Elizabeth Way streetcar tunnel on the private streetcar right-of-way from Humber Loop, about to enter Lake Shore Blvd and head west to Long Branch.<br><br>The wooden shoring and scaffolding around the QEW and streetcar tunnel was due to this section of the QEW near Swansea being under expansion and realignment in 1973-74, with new lanes added to the south of the existing roadway (requiring extending the existing streetcar tunnel under the new lanes). Streetcars to Long Branch were kept running during the construction period, passing through the tunnel via a single track controlled by traffic lights at both ends (more info and photos can be found at Steve Munro's blog post <a href=https://stevemunro.ca/2019/06/30/humber-loop-qew-realignment-1973-74/><b>here</b></a>).<br><br><i>Tom Gascoigne photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

TTC CLRV 4159 is short-turning on a 505 Dundas run, heading southbound on Church Street approaching Queen Street. It's passing "pawn shop alley" along Church, this area long known for its many pawn shops. McTamney's Pawnbrokers and Williams Pawnbrokers are visible here, and Grant's Pawnbrokers and Thifty's occupied multiple storefronts to the south along with various other used buy and sell stores in the immediate area (some still survive here today, including McTamney's). <br><br> <i>Robert D. CP RDC-4 9200 and an RDC-3 head up the TH&B Budd run from Buffalo to Toronto, seen taking on passengers at Fort Erie station after crossing the border from the US into Canada. In the background, some industrial markers of nearby Buffalo can be seen across the Niagara River. CP only had three RDC-4 (baggage/RPO) cars, and photos suggest 9200 saw the most use on this train (9250/51 spent most of their time on the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=14626><b>Sudbury-White River</b></a> runs).<br><br>According to timetables from that era, this would be Penn Central train #371, scheduled to be at Fort Erie a little after 5pm, and due into Toronto just before 8pm. This train actually had three(!) different train numbers on the schedule: it was PC #371 from PC's Buffalo Terminal to Welland, TH&B #371 from Welland to Hamilton, and CP #322 from Hamilton to Toronto. The eastbound train had a similar numbering scheme (CP 321/TH&B 376/PC 376). The TH&B Budds would continue into the VIA era until being <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=9031><b>discontinued in 1981</b></a>, just prior to Amtrak's Maple Leaf service <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=41208><b>starting up</b></a>.<br><br><i>Harold E. GP9 to the rescue! When an eastbound VIA passenger train lead by LRC 6911 ran out of fuel, CN sent out a locomotive to rescue the consist. TTC Peter Witt streetcar 2766 is seen returning back to the yard from an overnight fantrip around the city, and is shown about to enter the back of St. Clair (Wychwood) Carhouse yard on the tracks off Wychwood Avenue at Benson Avenue. St. Clair Avenue can be seen in the distance. Photographer John Bromley's white mid-60's Plymouth Barracuda is visible parked on the right (sold as a Valiant Barracuda early on in Canada, hence the trunk lettering). <br><br> By 1965, the few remaining cars of TTC's fleet of old Peter Witt streetcars were facing their last months of revenue service (most were retired in 1963 when the University subway line opened, the remaining cars saw infrequent use), and enthusiasts often <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47439><b>chartered cars for fantrips</b></a> while they were still active. Photos show during this June 27th 1965 overnight and morning fantrip, 2766 made visits to Mimico, Dufferin Loop, Runnymede Loop, Viaduct Loop, Harbourfront Loop, Bedford Loop, and St. Clarens Loop. 2766 was the last active car, retired in July 1965, but kept by the TTC and later refurbished for <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32946><b>Tour Tram service</b></a> in the early 1970's. <br><br> <i>John F. CP Rail SD40-2 5604 leads SD40 5544, RS18 8735, and a 4220-series C424 on a southbound freight past the Ontario Northland shops near Main Street overpass in North Bay. The paint on CP 5604 is still looking fresh and shiny, having been outshopped from GMD London months before in May 1972. SD40 5544 in old script paint wouldn't be long for the paint shop (sister 5541 would become the last SD40 in script, finally being repainted in mid-1975).<br><br>If one looks close enough, the first car behind the power is an old 40' stock car, usually handled at the head-end to make switching it out for feeding and watering the livestock inside easier.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

GO Transit cab car 233 leads train #801, the first Barrie line train of the PM rush hour parade out of Union Station, northbound up the CN Newmarket Subdivision. GO F59PH 549 on the rear has slowed its pushing, and the train is about to slam the Davenport diamond interlocking plant with <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32382><b>CP's North Toronto Sub</b></a>, just north of Dupont Avenue.<br><br>The gentrification is strong in this former industrial bastion of Toronto: the tan building in the background is the old American Standard plant (manufacturer of sanitary products like toilets), that had been converted into lofts. On the left was the old Canadian General Electric (CGE) Royce Works plant at Dupont and Lansdowne (Dupont used to be called Royce Street). Most of the plant, once spanning that entire southwest quadrant of the diamond, had been demolished. The original building at the corner was spared, and incorporated into the new condos later built on site. There was once a connecting track between CN and CP here (parts remained in the weeds), used for interchange and accessing some of the local aforementioned industries. On the northeast quadrant (out of frame) was the old CGE Davenport Works, partially converted into lofts and housing (the north headhouse had been converted, the south headhouse was eventually demolished. Apparently there was lots of PCB contamination on the site from decades of manufacturing electrical transformers).<br><br>Davenport would continue to see GO bilevels clatter over the diamond until <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51598><b>April 2023</b></a>, when the new grade separation opened under Metrolinx ownership. A concrete flyover and more condos greets anyone standing in this spot today.

Canada and Gulf Terminal GMD SW8 102 (lettered for Chemin de Fer de Matane et du Golfe, CFMG) is heading westbound back to the yard at Mont Joli, seen here crossing the Mitis River at Price, Quebec.<br><br>Canada and Gulf Terminal (Chemin de Fer de Matane et du Golfe, CFMG) was a small regional 36 mile shortline that handled mainly paper and lumber traffic along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, in the Mont-Joli to Matane area. Their small roster included GE 70-tonner 101, SW8 102, and SW1200 103 (acquired from the R&S), as well as an <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=23824><b>ex-NYC doodlebug</b></a>, and a combine used for mixed trains.<br><br>CN took over the line in 1975, and a <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=27905><b>ferry operation</b></a> was established between Matane and Baoie Comeau. One CN SW1200RS was even <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=26689><b>relettered for the CGT as 104</b></a>. CN ran operations until spinning the line off in 1999 to the Quebec Railway Corp (who ran operations with CFMG-lettered <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=42371><b>6900-series SD40-3's</b></a> and ex-CP RS18u's). When CN purchased a handful of QRC's operations in late 2008, it again re-acquired this portion of the line.<br><br>CFMG 102 was <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=22729><b>sold to Dofasco</b></a> as their 27/427 a few years later, and eventually became a slug.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

After restoration in 1973 for Tour Tram service downtown, the TTC's small group of Peter Witt streetcars (2424, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47439><b>2766</b></a>, and <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=53292 ><b>2894</b></a>) also became popular for fantrip charters. Here, TTC "small witt" 2766 is posed southbound on Parliament at Dundas. Back when new GO Transit F59PH's had taken over a lot of GO's commuter trains and rendered their older power surplus, some of the rebuilt ex-Rock Island GP40-3 fleet found their way leased to CP for freight service (at least one unit roamed as far west at Alberta). At Woodstock in early February 1992, CP SD40-2 5590 leads GO GP40-3's 724 and 723 on a westbound freight near the west end of the yard, just past Ingersoll Avenue. Both would be traded in to EMD two years later on a <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=33769><b>new F59PH</b></a> order, and join the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43744><b>EMD lease fleet</b></a> in the EMDX 200-series.<br><br><i>Gord Taylor photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Seeing one B-unit was common, two B-units was a frequent occurrence, but today, CN #436 has cornered the market on B-units: three CN F7Bu's (9190, 9192, 9195) make up most of #436's power today, with GP40-2W 9656 in the lead and SW1200 7021 trailing (not being equipped with MU, it was just along for the ride). The train is on the Grimsby Sub in St. Catharines, possibly viewed from the St. Paul Street overpass.<br><br>As part of it's 1970's rebuilt program, CN rebuilt 10 F7B units into the 9190-9199 series to run with their 30 rebuilt F7A's. They were common power running with the A's, GP9's, and more modern power into the late 1980's. Most ended up scrapped, but CN 9190 was acquired by the Feather River Rail Society and painted up as Western Pacific 725C, to go with their WP FP7 805A.<br><br><i>Reg Button photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

In the wee hours of the night, John Bromley was on the prowl around the deserted platforms of the TTC's Davisville Subway Station and caught a train of brand new Hawker Siddeley H1 subway cars testing on the Yonge line, with H1's 5346, 5347, 5350 and 5351 making up this 4-car consist. The train is sitting at the southbound platform of Davisville Station, with Davisville Shops visible in the background (an old Gloucester subway car can be seen inside). John probably had his tripod set up for the photo, as the slide mount notes this shot as a 1 second exposure at F4, with a 35mm lens (on Kodachrome, of course). <br><br> At the time, the 164 new H1 subway cars from Thunder Bay were still <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36389><b>being delivered</b></a> to Greenwood Yard (a report from John in the UCRS newsletter states 46 of the 5336-5499 order was on the property at the time). Crews were undergoing training and testing on them, and 14 cars so far had been assigned to Davisville Yard including 5346-47 and 5350-51. The first H1 train had entered revenue service on July 26th, and the plan was to have a number of H1 trains based out of Davisville in revenue service on the Yonge line until the new Bloor-Danforth line they were purchased for opened in February of next year (there would be a glut of subway cars in the fleet until then, allowing some G's and M1's to be sent to Greenwood for repairs and other work). <br><br> The H1 fleet was followed up by successive H-series orders over the years, and remained in service for three decades until retirement and replacement by new <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=1797><b>Bombardier T1</b></a> subway cars in the mid-late 90's. <br><br> <i>John F. During the first week of operation of GO Transit's new Richmond Hill line, GO APCU 905 leads a 6-car train of single-level Hawkers and GP40-2W northbound on the Bala Subdivision. The train has just crossed John Street in Markham, having crossed Doncaster diamond with CN's York Sub minutes before.<br><br>The <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32150><b>inaugural train trip and ceremony</b></a> on the new Toronto to Richmond Hill commuter service took place the previous Saturday (April 29th).
