"Come to Marineland, where you can touch a whale in Friendship Cove, see the dolphins do their dolphin thing, and...shoot a train too?". Why yes!<br><br>CP Rail GP9u 8212 on a short local handles a single covered hopper inside Marineland, sitting by the switch to the Washington Mills siding at the main access road inside the amusement park grounds. The Geep is working the CP Chippawa Industrial Spur (around Mile 13.50) that runs south from CP's Hamilton Sub (the old PC/CR Canada Division line, aka the CASO, and now CP's Montrose Spur) down to the Welland River in Chippawa, where the line ends by the only other customer, Saint Gobain. A 1992 CP timetable specifically states only single unit operation is permitted on the entire spur, with a speed restriction of maximum 5 mph. The date of this blank, unlabeled slide is unknown, but judging by other photos of 8212 it was taken sometime in the 1990's.<br><br>Since Marineland is private property, gates block off this portion of the rail line through the park at both ends. Access here for a photo or two would have only been possible by paying admission to Marineland to get into the park (Marineland was the latecomer, having been built in the early 1960's along one side of the line, but it looks like they only began to expanded their park to the property across the tracks in the 1970's-80s).<br><br>This was once the old Michigan Central Niagara Branch that ran from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake. A hydro corridor also rain south alongside part of it here. Research shows the line south of Chippawa to Fort Erie was abandoned in 1941, and the remaining section served as a short spur from there to the mainline to access a few local customers. The line passed through New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail ownership until CP acquired the old CASO from Conrail in the 1980's. When the main CASO line (CP Hamilton Sub) through the downtown Niagara Falls tourist area was lifted in 2001, it was removed only as far south as the switch to the Chippawa Industrial Spur, letting CP locals continue to have access to serve Washington Mills and Saint Gobain.<br><br>With all the controversy surrounding Marineland and its recent change of ownership, it should be interesting to see what becomes of the place and how this line fairs in the future.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Canadian Pacific 3632, an N2a-class 2-8-0 (built by CLC in 1911), steams outside CP's Lambton Roundhouse in West Toronto between assignments. She was one of the regulars that worked <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=21826><b>Port McNicoll</b></a>, that has the distinction of becoming CP's last regular freight steam operation a year later. In the background, new diesel power is present in the form of an MLW FA2 on the adjacent track, and an RS3 poking out of roundhouse stall 16.

TTC PCC 4399 (A6-class built by CC&F in 1948) pauses southbound at the corner of Bathurst Street and Harbord Street drop off and pick up a passenger while on the Bathurst route. The old Canadian National Brampton Station (built by Grand Trunk (GTR) in 1907 to replace the original 1855 station) has seen a lot of changes over the years, some for the better, others less so. The transition from steam to diesel in the 1950's, the introduction of <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36003><b>GO Transit commuter service</b></a> in 1974, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=852><b>VIA</b></a> taking over passenger services from CN in 1978, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=11147><b>extra station platforms</b></a> for expanded GO service, and more. At one point, Ryerson University was even going to build its campus right next to the station, in the parking lot to the west (thankfully, this seems to have been nixed for the Ryerson/TMU medical school at the Bramalea Civic Centre). It also outlasted nearby competitor <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=33072><b>CPR's station</b></a> after CP discontinued its passenger service in 1970 (but the station was thankfully saved, and reconstructed after many years).<br><br>During the final years of the steam era in Canada, one of CN's famed 4-8-4 "Northern" steam engines 6200 pulls into Brampton Station on the head of a short 4-car westbound passenger train in October 1958. The fall sun angle suggests this is an afternoon or late afternoon train (maybe Toronto-London train #111 via Stratford, scheduled to be at Brampton just before 2pm). Note the old train order signal, and CN Telegraph/Cable Office sign by the ticket office window. In 1958, the CN Brampton Sub (renamed the Halton Sub in 1965) was still single track with ABS signals, and the second track here was the siding that ended east of the station as-shown.<br><br>Protected by a federal historical designation in 1992, Brampton Station (now called "Brampton Innovation District GO Station" for the next 10 years, thanks to city council...) will see further changes nearby as the houses across the tracks along Railroad Street are redeveloped, a possible third main track for expanded all-day-two-way <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=10415><b>GO service</b></a>, and a future LRT line may be knocking at its doorstep in the near future when the nearby Brampton Transit downtown terminal is redeveloped (that replaced an old coal dealer, note the siding on the right to the coal unloading trestle).<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown (unmarked duplicate), Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Cruising along Queen Street West on a sunny afternoon finds TTC PCC 4687 (an A12-class secondhand ex-Cleveland car built by St. Louis Car Co in 1946) stopping to let off a group of passengers at the corner of Queen Street West and Shaw Street, operating on a westbound Queen run heading for Humber Loop. Note the "New" Corvale Restaurant on the left (open since the early 60's at least). The highrises of downtown Toronto await in the distance, but a turn right down Shaw would find the photographer behind the wheel in the still-industrial Liberty Village/Parkdale area (the building on the right is part of farm implement manufacturer Massey Ferguson's sprawling industrial complex).

Today, the older storefronts and industrial buildings of gritty 70's "West Queen West" shown here have all been replaced with glass highrises, and more than a few extra tall buildings line the downtown skyline in the distance. Newer Bombardier LRV's have replaced the ALRV/CLRV fleet that replaced much of the PCC's in the 80's.

TTC PCC 4097 (part of the original A1-class order of TTC PCC's built by CC&F in 1938-1940) heads southbound on Roncesvalles Avenue at Fern Avenue on an eastbound King streetcar run on a sunny July morning in 1965. Various small shops mix with residential houses along the street, advertising for such things as CIL paints and IDA Drugs.<br><br>At the time, eastbound King cars departed Vincent Loop (the off-street loop east of Dundas & Edna, pre-Dundas West Subway Station), headed down Dundas and Roncesvalles (shown here) to the Sunnyside area, took King Street east from Queen to Broadview Avenue, and Broadview up to Erindale Loop at Broadview & Erindale Ave. A few months later, service to Erindale Loop would end and be replaced by the new Broadview Subway Station's loop on the under-construction Bloor-Danforth subway line. Vincent Loop would be replaced in February by the new <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51391><b>Dundas West Subway Station</b></a> loop.<br><br><i>James L. A rare view of a Canadian Pacific rail-mounted steam shovel, CP 400308, loading some ballast flatcars with loads of rock at Frank Slide, Alberta. A worker rides the deck behind the shovel boom, likely operating the controls for its large chain-driven shovel bucket, as more workers set up the trailing flatcars with wooden stakes and blocking. The steam shovel is operating in the middle of the namesake rockslide, on some siding tracks off CP's Crowsnest Subdivision mainline. Information on CP's operation here is scarce, the shovel might have been stationed here for conveniently obtaining aggregate from the slide for railway purposes (fill, crushing, etc). Rock loading on flatcars with wooden stakes and side rails is also rather curious, although due to the size of the rocks, removing the stakes and pushing them off the sides may have been the easiest way to unload them (they would have clogged bottom-dump hopper cars, and would have been harder to unload from gondolas).<br><br>Frank Slide got its name on April 29th 1903 when a giant rockslide of limestone slid down Turtle Mountain and buried the east end of the mining town of Frank, the coal mine, the CPR line, and buried between 70-90 residents of the town. The railway line and mine were both opened, part of the town relocated further away, but much of the area remains unchanged since the rockslide happened.<br><br>With the exception of some early images, photos of CP steam shovels in their later years are scarce. An old freight car roster shows three steam shovels (CP 400308-400310, each with a 4 cubic yard bucket) still on the roster in 1965, although with the popularity of newer, more nimble diesel-powered cable and hydraulic excavators, those old steam-powered relics likely didn't last too much longer.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown (possibly E.W.Johnson of Calgary), Dan Dell'Unto collection slide with extensive restoration (this was the first slide in a roll, and 1/3rd of it was horribly overexposed and colour-shifted).

Not just for branchline work, the little GMD SW1200RS was a versatile model used in mainline freight, branchline, yard switching, hump, local, and even passenger service: CP 8131 is seen with two Canadian Vickers gallery cars on the "Yo-Yo" (the all-day back-and-forth Montreal commuter train) unloading at Montreal West Station. Typical consist was two cars with one unit was assigned, and often it was an SW1200RS. According to the late Bruce Chapman it was typically an 8131-8171 series unit equipped with 24RL brakes. Since the Canadian Vickers cars had their own onboard HEP generators, using a freight unit such as an RS18 or SW1200RS wasn't a problem.<br><br>Many crews tended to prefer those 24RL equipped units over the earlier 6SL brake setups still on 8100-8130. According to Bruce, one time an earlier 8100-8130 series unit was assigned to that run, and the engineer (who was "a tad portly") had a fit about running it, as the larger 6SL brake handle setup interfered with his girth.<br><br>As part of the SW rebuild program, most of the upgraded SW1200RSu units in the 1200-series received modern 26LUM brakes.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown (duplicate slide), Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

After pulling back out of the siding south of Camrose station, CN RDC-3 6356 (left) on the Calgary-Edmonton Railiner train inches up to the back of CN RDC-1 6114 (right), on the Drumheller-Edmonton Railiner. Crews work to connect both units together, and both trains will depart <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=54669><b>Camrose station together</b></a> as a combined run to Edmonton. CN 6356 had previously <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=54622><b>arrived first</b></a> at Camrose, but headed into the siding nearby to clear the station track for 6114 to arrive.<br><br>There's a lesson in CN RDC spotting here: note 6356 on the left has the later "Phase 2" Budd RDC ends (headlight in housing built into the roof, numberboards at front face only) while 6114 has "Phase 1" ends that CN modified (original headlight position was above the doorway, moved to a new headlight housing on the roof with added numberboards in order to clear the diaphragm and diaphragm housings CN installed). CN also plated over the larger Phase 1 window openings and cut smaller Phase 2 windows into them. The original numberboards remained on the body sides. The fluting on the vestibule doors was unique to 6356, originally delivered to the MKT with end and vestibule door fluting (a styling feature CN didn't opt for). 6356 has a later Nathan K3L air horn, while 6114 has the earlier M3H model that CN (and CP) ordered standard on most of their early diesels.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown (possibly E.W.Johnson), Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Canadian Pacific S3 switcher 6538, still painted in faded maroon & grey block paint, works the Toronto Harbour Commission (THC) trackage at Rees St. Yard, located along Queen's Quay at Rees St. Switching in the shadow of the Gardiner Expressway downtown, timetables indicate this is the THC "Central Harbour Terminals" area.<br><br>CP S3 6538, built by MLW in 1955, was equipped with a number of special features applied by CP to some units: front numberboard and front/rear pilot plows for road service, a 3-chime air horn (replacing the old single chime), cab roof cutouts (likely to help deflect exhaust fumes), a spark arrestor, and a watchman's heater for keeping the engine warm when shut down between remote branchline assigments (note short capped stack by main exhaust). Also note the standard-issue yellow rerail frog, hung from under the frame. 6538, like most of CP's Toronto-assigned Alco/MLW switcher units, was stationed and maintained out of CP's <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32793><b>John Street Roundhouse</b></a> downtown, a stone's throw away from Queen's Quay. <br><br> By this point in time, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46614><b>GP7u, GP9u</b></a> and SW1200RSu units were being rebuilt by CP to replace the remaining Alco/MLW switcher fleet. CP 6538 was retired in 1985 and sold to Sidbec-Feruni in Quebec, becoming their 0409. It appears to have become Boston Railway Terminal 0409 (and eventually scrapped).<br><br>Rees Street yard was a small stub-ended yard along the THC trackage to serve the various industries along the Toronto harbourfront. East of the yard, the line had <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=30548><b>streetrunning</b></a> and street-side running portions all the way to the lead coming from Don Yard. West of Rees Street, the line continued on a private right-of-way and curved north at Bathurst Street, past the old Loblaws warehouse to the main rail corridor (CN accessed the line there, and CP had their "Wharf Lead" from Parkdale Yard that connected to it). As time when on and waterfront industry declined, traffic dwindled, and in the mid-1980's the THC Queen's Quay trackage from Bathurst Street to near Yonge was removed, leaving the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=18545><b>eastern trackage</b></a> to serve Redpath and some other remaining industry, and the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=28629><b>Ashbridges Bay/Portlands</b></a> trackage.<br><br><i>Michael Tedesco photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.<i>

Amtrak F40PH 249 leads joint VIA-Amtrak train #181 "The International" westbound on the CN Oakville Sub into Burlington Station, passing the signals at Brant Street underpass. A pair of unknown railfans bearing cameras get their shots of the consist near the platform edge. Today's consist is an Amtrak F40PH, a single Amfleet car, two Horizon cars, and three VIA LRC cars. The Sunday run of the International was known as #181 (running later, in the afternoon), the regular weekday & Saturday (morning run) train was the #81. CP Rail GP9's 8517, 8526, 8817 and 8511 sit parked outside the Alyth Yard diesel shop in Calgary awaiting attention from shop forces. Two sport the newer "Action Red" livery with end stripes and large multimark, while the other two retain their 1960's maroon & grey "Script" livery.<br><br>Most of CP's GP9 fleet was based out west, specifically assigned out of Alyth, Winnipeg, and later Nelson. The three 8500's here were Alyth-assigned dual freight/passenger units, part of a group equipped with steam generators (8501-8529) for use as passenger protection power on The Canadian and other passenger trains CP operated. Dynamic brakes enabled them to be used west of Calgary on the mountain grades, and the split 800/800gal fuel & water tanks underneath necessitated the air tanks (or "torpedo tubes") to be mounted on the long hood behind the cab (see <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=54604><b>here</b></a>). Among the differences, 8517 and 8511 sport the Pyle single beam "barrel style" headlight earlier units were delivered with, while 8526 and 8817 feature the later Pyle dual sealed-beam headlights.<br><br>Many of these units lasted into the 80's as <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=6218><b>passenger protection power</b></a> for VIA's Canadian, but were slowly cycled into the rebuild program, emerging as chop-nose GP9u units without steam generators for yard and roadswitcher work.<br><br><i>Reg Button photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Due to a derailment at the time on the CN Grimsby Sub, Amtrak had to detour through the Hamilton industrial area to get by. CN RDC-1 6114 has arrived at Camrose Station from Drumheller (on the Drumheller to Edmonton "Railiner"), and has made its station stop. Now, CN RDC-3 6356 on the Calgary-Edmonton train has come out of the siding (note switch stand in the foreground) and both are being coupled together by the crew in order for the two trains to to make the combined run together from Camrose to Edmonton.<br><br>This view offers a better angle of the station platform, and the end fluting of 6356 (the only CN RDC so equipped in the fleet, originally built for the MKT and acquired thirdhand from the C&O). A meet of sorts: CP SD40 5502 leads two big M's on a westbound freight (with auto parts and intermodal traffic on the head end) heading through Obico on CP's Galt Sub, passing a train of TTC Hawker Siddeley H5's heading eastbound on the Bloor-Danforth line after departing Kipling Subway Station.

Late 80's leased and MLW power: a westbound extra freight works the west end of Guelph Junction with plenty of power up front: CP M630 4573, leased Algoma Central Railway SD40-2 183 (a flag bracket off the rear of 4573 making it look like 133), RS18's 8765 and 8781, and SW1200RS 8161 (one of the old GRR-assigned regulars). Another view of the Edmonton-bound CN "Railiner" from Calgary, handled by RDC-3 6356, sitting at the station at Camrose awaiting arrival of the Drumheller RDC. It will soon move to a siding south of the station, allowing CN RDC-1 6114 arriving from Drumheller to make its station stop. 6356 will then pull in behind 6114, and the crews will couple both units together for the combined final run from Camrose to Edmonton.

CN RDC-3 6356 was originally built for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas as 20, their only RDC. It featured optional end and vestibule door fluting, an option a few railroads opted for (PGE being another). MKT 20 was later renumbered 162, and sold to the Chesapeake & Ohio in June 1962 as their 9082. A few years later, C&O sold the car to CN in August 1965, where it became their D-356 before being renumbered by CN to 6356 in 1969. When initially acquired by CN, the car still retaining fluting at both ends, but by 1971 it had lost its A-end fluting after an accident or other incident (the B-end fluting, still intact, is shown here).
<br><br>
It became VIA 6356 in 1978, and eventually rebuilt with a smaller baggage area (likely by CN at Pointe St. Charles shops) as VIA RDC-2m 6221 in March 1983. Sometime during its career as 6221, the B-end fluting was removed (but its door vestibule fluting was still retained). Some sources show it as retired in 1990 and stored until being sold to Industrial Rail Services (IRSI) in 2000, one of a large group of RDC cars IRSI acquired in hopes for rebuilding/refurbishing them for possible buyers. It was not rebuilt, and due to IRSI's financial difficulties in the mid-2010's, it was scrapped sometime in 2015-2016 along with most of IRSI's RDC inventory.
