Worked 41.5 years in CP mechanical department at Victoria and Port Coquitlam, now retired. First job was on Victoria Miniature Railway (10 1/4” gauge”) at Mattick’s Farm in Cordova Bay, with steam and battery power.

For me, the shot of E&N Baldwin scrapping at Wellcox in Nanaimo in July of 1974 that sums up the mess there is this, debris all about but operations continuing with cabooses all lined up and the yard office with scrap cars being scaled behind the crane’s boom. In the foreground, the day and afternoon chargehands at Wellcox (a job I worked six years later) are observing. That I was able to photograph it all from a variety of perches among the activity was due to the tolerance of Victoria locomotive foreman Hugh Albert Miller, who also organized and managed all the scrapping with no injury to any of us. On Vancouver Island, CP’s E&N Division handled logs from the Crown Zellerbach Logging Division reload at Lake Cowichan east 18 miles to Hayward (just north of Duncan) then north 17 miles to Ladysmith and CZ’s log dump. Here, typically clean GP9s 8676 and 8640 are eastward with a fire-season water car and log loads crossing the awkward-to-photograph (and seldom documented as a result) trestle bridge over Bings Creek at mileage 1.6 west of the junction at Hayward.

At Courtenay, the north end of CP’s Dayliner passenger service on Vancouver Island, a wye was used to turn the car to always have the baggage compartment leading, but in the Spring of 1972 that wye was removed, so changing ends became normal practice, with the result seen here on Friday 1973-06-02 as E&N southbound train No. 2 with Budd/CC&F RDC2 CP 9199 eases to a flagstop at Union Bay at mileage 130.2 of the Victoria subdivision, baggage compartment trailing but precisely on time at 1213 PDT.

At Westlock, AB, mileage 52.2 timetable west (compass north-northwest) from Edmonton, on Saturday 1976-09-25 just before noon, train Second 40 with two GMD1s was in the clear on two tracks for a meet with No. 31 with SD38-2 403 and trailing GP9s 211 and 203 which appeared at 1225 MDT. Of the four SD38-2s on NAR, it was normal for three to work the severe Peace River grades encountered by GSL Turns between McLennan and CN Roma Jct. while the other was cycled in rotation between McLennan and Dunvegan Yards in Edmonton for main shop maintenance.

Saltair at mileage 54.5 on CP’s E&N Victoria subdivision on Vancouver Island, midway between Chemainus and Ladysmith, had a 24-car siding on the west side up to and including timetable 96 of 1971-04-25, but timetable 97 of 1971-10-31 showed it as “nil” and Saltair disappeared from record in timetable 92 of 1973-10-28. A few years later, clear evidence of the siding remained as a Nitinat log train (Crown Zellerbach loads from Lake Cowichan to Ladysmith) with GP9s 8668 and 8613 headed north on Friday 1975-03-07.

Before purchasing any AC-drive locomotive (other than pioneer M640 4744), CP assessed what high-powered DC units were on the market by borrowing from other railways, and in the winter of 1990-1991 tested a near-new trio of Union Pacific GE Dash8-41CW units on grain trains between Calgary and Vancouver terminals, seen here as UP 9416+9413+9409 on 1991-03-03 with westbound loads in the siding at the west switch of Yale, BC, at 1531 PST in a snowstorm, meeting an eastbound with three SD40-2s CP 5861+5666+5676 and grain empties. PK okay, have a good trip.

<p>Eastward from Dawson Creek, BC, on Northern Alberta Railways, there were two large timber trestles, first at mileage 134.7 over Dawson Creek east of Iracard and second at mileage 131.5 over Bissette Creek just east of Pouce Coupé. This is the long one over Dawson Creek and just 3.3 miles east of the town, built in 1951 to replace a challenged one a few hundred feet downstream (to the right), here carrying timetable train No. 52 (a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday wayfreight returning to Grande Prairie, AB) on Tuesday 1977-09-20 with GP9 210 and thirteen cars plus caboose.</p>

<p>A similar shot, but taken three years later from an elevated viewpoint up a tree, is on the back cover of the recent NAR Diesels book by Les Kozma.</p>

Forty-eight years ago today, on Tuesday 1973-06-12 at mileage 68.3 Victoria sub. near South Wellington on CP’s E&N Division on Vancouver Island, a disregarded train order led to a southbound train with Baldwins 8011 and 8007 and a water car plus caboose colliding with northbound train No. 51 from Victoria with Baldwins 8008 and 8006. Here are the two leading units the next day, 8011 on right and 8008 on left, slightly separated after the 8007 and two cars had been pulled back to Wellcox yard in Nanaimo. Consider what could have happened if these units had been equipped with between-trucks fuel tanks like 8000 through 8004 were (with the behind-the-cab tank for steam generator water) for passenger service.

With the Victoria auxiliary on the south end and the Vancouver auxiliary on the north, the cleanup of the day-before head-on at mile 68.3 continued with re-railing the mangled-both-ends lead unit of train 51, 8008, with the crushed cab leaving all involved amazed and thankful the three crew members had survived when trailing unit 8006 had ridden up then over and down the bank to the left, with the behind-the-cab fuel tank of 8008 remarkably intact with no breach.

Westward from Grande Prairie, AB, the Northern Alberta Railways fulfilled the earlier name of Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia for this portion with the 88 miles of line to Dawson Creek, BC, and in 1977 were providing thrice weekly wayfreight service with timetable trains No. 51 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Grande Prairie and No. 52 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Dawson Creek. Motive power was frequently a single GP9, as with this No. 51 engine 206 on Wednesday 1977-09-21 by the lone elevator at Huallen, AB, at mileage 71.1 (measured from Rycroft, with Grande Prairie at 49.7) with three Hart-Otis ballast car loads plus four empty boxcars and caboose 13006.

At milepost 109 of the Grande Prairie sub. of the Northern Alberta Railways, highway 43 was crossed, and on the north (timetable west) side there was a spur frequently occupied by bridge and building gang outfit cars for attending to several significant timber trestles over Albright Creek just a bit farther west. Here is timetable train number 52 with GP9 210 from Dawson Creek, BC, vigorously heading home to Grande Prairie, AB, on Tursday 1977-09-20, just 3.9 km directly east of the BC-Alberta border. That section of now-CN track is now out of service, and Dawson Creek is served by CN’s former BC Railway lines from the west.

About halfway between Brocket and Pincher stations on CP’s Crowsnest subdivision, the railway at milepost 57 overpasses highway 3, and for a few moments on Sunday 1974-09-29, that overpass was occupied by timetabled train 979 (Lethbridge to Crowsnest, and onward via Cranbrook to the Union Pacific at Kingsgate, BC-Eastport, ID) with an all-FM power consist, 8609+8607+8554+4065, going west with enthusiasm, only six months before CP’s March 1975 shutdown of most FMs.

Just starting to work really hard on the job for which they were acquired, three SD38-2s (of the fleet total of four) of the Northern Alberta Railways have left the big Peace River bridge and the significant Heart River bridge behind, and at 1405 MDT are now crossing road 744 at mileage 47.56 of the Peace River subdivision, working the return half of a GSL Turn with loads from the CN Great Slave Lake Railway at Roma Jct. bound for McLennan then Edmonton and onward. With seven miles of severe grade ahead before reaching the level prairie at Judah at mileage 41.6, NA 402+404+401 will soon be in notch 8 and dropping close to their minimum continuous speed on the hill, with each unit rated for 1200 tons upgrade there.This shot is a crop of about one quarter of an expansive scene, originally done casually to verify the angled-out white Extra flags (a rivet-counter detail on all NA 400s and just a few blocks of other GMD and EMD units since the 1950s), and then the cropped view was realized as very effective on its own at capturing the essence of that operation and those units.

In September 2008 on two coal trains operating in the export coal loop from mines in southeastern BC to the Roberts Bank terminal near Vancouver, Canadian Pacific Railway started evaluating Electronically Controlled Brake equipment and operation, in which I played a small part on the coast end. ECP cross-talk between trains was an issue in the early days, so catching both trains on the road in the same photograph was rare, but on one occasion when loaded train 867-218 with 8891 leading had a power supply problem and was set out mostly in the siding at Lasha and the head-end into a storage track at Lytton in the CN directional running zone, train 867-219 with 8896 leading was also westbound there, captured here (with hoses and cables neatly tucked away, a personal project easy to apply on repeat terminal attendances) at 1109 PST on 2011-12-18 just west of where the former Canadian Northern standard depot used to sit.
