Not for the fainthearted. While we were waiting for the westbound Canadian just outside of Jasper a westbound freight was on its way, too. Luckily the Canadian could also be heard whistling its way west. At any rate, the head light of the freight could be seen first coming around the bent. Hearts were dropping. But all went well, except we did not get a shot of the Park car as anticipated. Also, it was a little struggle with the shadows of nearby trees.

VIA Rail's westbound Canadian was pretty close to the advertised as it passed through English shortly before arrival in Jasper. Before repainting the Park cars were a fitting tale end of a train. Nowadays this thick black line, well... In the far background Whistlers Mountain may be seen.

VIA Rail's westbound Canadian was pretty close to the advertised as it passed through English shortly before arriving in Jasper, AB. On previous trips this spot always had escaped my attention for one reason or another.

The first full day of my visit to Canada in 2015, June 5 started off miserable with the clouds hanging very low above Marathon on the north shore of Lake Superior. I was in for a very slow and cold start. While waiting for a train it seemed that the clouds were dispersing. So it happened. The first of two eastbounds arrived under a cover of clouds. After a meet with one westbound I was able to get the one shot I had been waiting for a number of years to take. The eastbound drag with 9657, 9360 and 3085 is seen rounding the bend before crossing the Little Pic River with the expanse of Lake Superior in the background.

Canadian Pacific's SD40-2s are getting rare these days. 5973 has been relagated to yard duties in the Lethbridge yard. On June 13 a fairly strong wind blew the clouds from a low pressure system up in Calgary into a sutherly direction creating some remarkable veils up in the sky.

In the evening of June 13, 2015 heavy clouds from the north had eventually moved into the area of Fort MacLeod. 8819, 5717, and 5560 had a ballast train, probably from the quarry west of Cranbrook, BC in tow as they were skirting the edges of these clouds near Pincher Station for a short while.

A shot I thought I never would take, a train with the Columbia River in the background. Well, I had seen this spot published... After a short stop in the Nelson Yard, or what remains thereof, 5560 passes by with its spray train to Trail just west of Nelson leaving behind a happy photographer. Actually, all persons I (tried) to talk to around this train were rather mum. An otherwise friendly roadmaster or so dropped something sounding like tree-huggers.

VIA's Canadian was not too much in a hurry on June 25, 2015, despite being about 12 hours late. A short sprint afforded a going away shot just east of Ashcroft. I especially like the faults in the walls of the surrounding hills.

In 2015 CN seemed to have been treating VIA's Canadian rather bad on its lines. On June 25 the train was running approximately 12 hours late. As far as I know the Canadian arrived even later than that in Vancouver. While waiting for the Canadian the sun actually made it through the clouds. As was to be expected, the closer the time came the tighter the clouds turned. Eventually, at 1446 train #1 - is it really #1 - passed by just east of Ashcroft. A thank you to the passenger newsgroup is in order here. It made me change my travel plans. But it got me some pictures not so easily to be had.

Creston, BC was the end of the day for the train crew on June 15. The crew had come over from Cranbrook, BC with the somewhat tired looking StL&H unit and 5717 on a ballast train earlier in the day. One local railfan, who heard the whistle and was wondering what was up, had turned out, too. He pointed out that the air-compressor of 5560 did not sound all that healthy, instead more like metal on metal working it out.

One of the surprises of my visit to Canada in 2015 was a weed train on the Kootenay Valley Railway. The train had come to Cranbrook, Bc behind a toasted AC4400. There 9672 was replaced by SD40-2 5560, one of three units remaining in the StL&H paint scheme. Just west of Curzon, BC the weed train is seen climbing out of the valley of the Moyie River on its way to Creston, BC.

On the morning of June 16,2015 the weed train left Creston, BC for Nelson, BC and beyond. The evening before nobody would or could tell when the train was to leave the next morning. After leaving the motel (the Downtowner Inn, in itself a sight with quite a charming lobby in the style of the very early 1970ies) in the morning the crews were just preparing for the day's trip. It did not take too long for the train to pass through at Koontenay Landing. Luckily the grass on the river bank was quite tall. By rolling and back and forth until the train came the very hungry mosquitos could at least be kept away from the legs.
