Well it took a while for me to finally connect with these in a photogenic way. Here is VIA #24 blasting out of Ottawa on Saturday October 28, having no trouble achieving track speed. This train made it to its first stop in Alexandria 7 minutes ahead of schedule.<br><br>
Connecting with this train was made possible by VIA's announcement the week before on social media of a scheduled rotation for several "New Fleet" sets. This was assisted by the departure of #24 coinciding with (what felt like) Ottawa's only hour of sunlight that weekend.<br><br>
In addition to replacing the legacy fleet, these sets may also spell the end of grabbing passenger train consists on the fly, for those so interested. I usually try to record them when I can - but the numbers on these cars are smaller that the fine print on a cell phone contract, so at 100 mph there is no chance. The cab car was 2303 for those who care.

Happy Bayview Day to those RP.ca contributors close enough to attend and dedicated enough to deal with the weather. At some point I'll need to make it to one of these.

No one caught this today - in what was once a regular scene, here are TH&B 75, 73, and 74 leading the "Starlite", a.k.a. the CP Hamilton Turn from Agincourt.

CN #589 creeps up to the elderly bridge over the Mississippi River outside Galetta, Ontario. The train had to wait for workers to clear the bridge. The bridge is undergoing an extensive overhaul, which bodes well for the future of service on this line.<br>
<br>
This is the last remaining piece of the Ottawa, Arnprior, & Parry Sound Railway, which still connects its first two namesakes.

With an Ottawa winter looming, the sun is already low in the November sky as VIA #55 boards passengers ahead of its 15:35 departure. The four in-service cars are alongside the station's new high-level platform. In many ways, seeing a 6-car train of classic stainless steel coaches led by TWO F40s in 2022 is pretty incredible. Given the circumstances requiring the buffer cars and the age of everything here, we should appreciate these sights while they are still "normal". The train met #42 in Smiths Falls, led by P42DC 911. An envious engineer on the other train, perhaps no fan of GE power, radioed: "How lucky are you guys to have ALL the 6400s?"

VIA #63 has just slid over Park Street, and will shortly cross onto the platform track for its stop at Brockville. The somewhat mismatched consist is 6426-8623-3452-4006-4103-8117-4121-8104.<br><br>
Park Street in the background used to be a three-track crossing, with a service track crossing south of the two mains. The dilapidated roof in the background on the right used to be a CO-OP mill, which was rail served. In older photos, I have seen cars on the siding there, at least as late as 1980.

VIA 6420 is in charge as #24 hits 88 mph approaching Russell Road. Since it's an F40, not a DeLorean, there was no time travel, but in the near future that may be necessary to see a scene like this. The few remaining Renaissance corridor sets are likely VIA's most endangered equipment as the new fleet arrives and enters service.
<br><br>
These telegraph poles have long lost their code line, but their slant is recent. The train is crossing the path of one of the most severe downbursts from the derecho that blew across Ontario on May 21 of this year. All of the houses near this crossing sustained severe roof damage, several barns were destroyed, and a mile up the line the train will pass a woodlot that was completely flattened. Many of the poles and trees in the area that didn't blow down were left with a permanent lean.

Between the Ottawa station and the Rideau River, the Beachburg Subdivision slices southwest through Ottawa neighbourhoods, but is mostly out of sight except where it crosses arterial roads. All crossings but one in this section are grade-separated, and of those, this bridge over Smyth Road is the oldest one. A stamp on the side of the bridge dates this to 1961, making it 10 years older than the next-oldest bridge. Like most of the other bridges, it was built with space for a second track, although at present it only carries one. It's getting up there for a cast concrete structure, and the abutments were recently patched.
<br><br>
In the past 61 years, this bridge has carried the Dominion and The Canadian for CP, the Super Continental for CN, local wayfreights (at one time far more prevalent in the area), and the odd detouring mainline freight. Today, all of that is gone; the bridge is now only a conduit for VIA frequencies between Ottawa and Toronto. Those peaked at 10 each way in 2019; at this point in 2022, the line is back up to 8 trains each way as post-pandemic travel picks back up.
<br><br>
Here, 6432 leads VIA #51 towards Toronto, a few minutes after departing Ottawa. Behind 6432 are five LRC coaches, 6424, and then another coach - a strange-looking consist, but as #51 is a scheduled run-through from Montreal, it has the task of shuttling spare equipment from MMC to TMC.

As a follow-up to Mr. Dan Dell'Unto's recent post, here is a different view of a deadhead GO move arriving in Hamilton, two months later. According to the slide mount, this is GO 701 and CN 9316 with APCU 904 on the rear of the first consist, followed by GO 704 and CN 9317 with APCU 906 trailing. Unfortunately, the slide does not include the photographer's name.<br><br>Just over the roofline of the lead coaches, you can see another cut of those tarpaulin-covered short containers on flatcars. VIA #55 is only a few minutes into its journey, about to pass the second milepost of the Beachburg Subdivision and the Pleasant Park level crossing. This day's edition has lounge car 1750 on the rear (unofficially still "Glenfraser", from the car's BCR days), which rarely ventures out except when chartered.<br><br>
...So I normally try to record the consists of VIA trains, when possible. Seeing Glenfraser caught me off guard, so FTW I managed to flub both the consist record AND my "roster shot" of Glenfraser. So here, 6439 is trailed by 3459-3352-3322-3314-33xx-1750...

Big Sky Country. The UP leader on CP #142 doesn't seem too out of place as it screams through soybean fields on the approach to De Beaujeu. This part of Western Quebec and adjacent Eastern Ontario are heavily agricultural with flat, wide-open vistas, reminiscent of the Great Plains in the UP's home turf.

Smiths Falls had some early snow on the ground in mid-November of 2018, as VIA 6405 carries the paddle on #52. The train has just cleared Chambers Street and is occupying William Street East. Up front, VIA 917 is facing a Slow to Stop signal, allowing it to enter the CP Winchester Sub and meet VIA #53. In between were LRC cars 3468, 3335, 3313, 3340, and 3365. The train's bidirectional consist would allow it to return to Toronto as #640 later that afternoon.

November looks gloomy to me even when the sun is out. The weak low-angle rays have punched through the clouds to light up a single GP20C-ECO. The train is heading for Bedell with a cut of potash cars, for delivery to an agribusiness on the last remaining spur of the (former) Prescott Subdivision.

CN Dash 9-44CW 2691 and GP38-2(W) 4809 lead an eastbound through Brockville on August 9, 2015. ES44DC 2277 was the mid-train DPU.

CP 8906 and 9710 (plus DPU 8912) lead #112 through the new plant in Finch, Ontario. Through 2020, the Winchester Subdivision was converted from a directional-double-track, ABS-signalled territory to a CTC-signalled single track with sidings. There used to be a pair of single-searchlight intermediate signals east of the Main Street crossing in Finch. I had hoped to catch a train there before the end of ABS, but that didn't work out. However, the crossing in Finch is still double-tracked, as the former north main here serves as one of the new CTC sidings. The new LED signals are no searchlights, but at least they put them on a cool gantry. Plus a backtrack off the siding retained one of the hand-throw switch targets.

Finch was at one time a junction, where the New York Central line to Ottawa crossed the CP main. The NYC gave up the line in 1957, when their bridge in Cornwall became a casualty of the St. Lawrence Seaway opening. However, before this happened, rail operations in Finch were captured in a <a href"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUznPBD6tSs&t=749s"> National Film Board short.</a>

VIA #60 has <i>slowed down</i> to 80 mph as it flies across the South Nation River and bounces over the Dollard Street crossing, about to slam past the station and through the rest of Casselman.<br><br>
Wait, VIA #60? Due to a CN derailment in Prescott on September 2, VIA was detouring all Toronto-Montreal frequencies through Ottawa. VIA #60 normally runs as a J-train to Brockville with #50, but today it remained attached through to Ottawa. From Ottawa, it was cleared to race to Dorval, in a futile effort to make up lost time. This train was the final detour - its counterpart, VIA #61, sat in Coteau for a while before heading straight down the Kingston Subdivision.

I miss seeing the full cowl GMD units. Originally designated "SD50AF", and originally numbered 9900, this unit and three sisters were basically SD60s on the inside, delivered along with the first SD50F order in 1985. When the "real" SD60F units arrived these units were renumbered as the first in the series. <br><br>I was pleasantly surprised to catch this beast racing through Kingston station. The original "99" was fading through underneath the "55" on the side of the cab. It had ten years to go until retiring along with all of the SD60Fs.

Only a few minutes after leaving Ottawa station, VIA #632 crosses over Innes Road, with P42DC 909 leading a five-car LRC consist of 3452, 3326, 3328, 3313, and 3301.

The underpass replaced a level crossing in 1977, and has room for two tracks. Just ahead of #632 is the entrance to the M&O wye, which VIA uses to turn consists. The M&O subdivision between here and Rigaud was removed by CP in the 1980s, but VIA actually owns the right-of-way, preserving the alignment for potential future use as a high-speed line.

Christmas is over, but the Union Station Rail Corridor is putting on its own version of a light show. The "Maple Leaf" has discharged its passengers, and is backing out to Mimico for servicing, with the Amfleet cars briefly adding green to the reds, yellows, and whites bouncing off the rails in downtown Toronto.

The <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=45336"> Amtrak rare mileage tour </a> continues. The "Maple Leaf" has almost completed its detour over the N&NW spur, and will rejoin the Grimsby Sub in about half a mile. This shot is another interesting "then & now" comparison of Hamilton's industrial scenery.
