We were talking about this Spur today so figured I'd post one from here. On this June day, IC 2719 leads CN L562 up the Humberstone Spur back towards Port Robinson with two empty dimensional flats from a one off move several weeks prior for a couple of transformers for the substation next to Vale.

The 0700 Yard Job has set out on the north track of the Grimsby Sub, to clear the main at Mile 41. Cars in tow are for MANA, Stelco and Parkland Fuels.

The electric lock switch at Mile 41 of the Grimsby Sub has been restored to normal and the 0700 is on its way into Parkdale Yard, from where it will head into Hamilton's industrial area via the wye and New Gages Spur. Cars in tow are for Stelco (coils and lone tank) and Parkland Fuels (the tail end tanks). Going around the wye at Parkdale allows both customers to be switched without running around the train.

During the ongoing (I think it's still ongoing?) demolition of the coal-fired Nanticoke Generating Station, there was a period of time in which larger pieces were being shipped out by rail. The demolition is being undertaken by Delsan, a subsidiary of American Iron & Metal - hence the AIMX gons. I attempted to get this shot a few times, but was only successful once. <br><br>A hat tip to Glenn, who was also out on this day and ensured I was in the right spot for the shot.

CP 8757 heads up and eight-car CP 254 as they near Welland Yard. They'd work Welland before continuing onto NS in Buffalo, New York. This marked the second Monday in a row that 254 crossed the border (normally running as a Welland Turn on Mondays) - a new operating profile perhaps?

CP 2317 leads for the 1559 Yard Job (conventional crew) as they pass through CP's yard in West Fort. Grain terminals of years past provide the backdrop.

On a hot and hazy Thanksgiving Monday, CP 4506 and CP 2270 are giving it all they have as CP TE11 summits the grade out of the Welland Canal tunnel cut with 17 cars lifted from CN Southern Yard. The cars are for Innophos in Port Maitland (hoppers and white/black tanks) and Chemtrade (black tanks) in Niagara Falls. The track in the foreground is CP's Rusholme Siding, which currently (and often) has racks stored on it. It is also used by both CP and CN to access Trillium's Cayuga Spur for interchange.

On a mostly overcast day in Niagara, I happened upon Welded Tube's centrecab out and about shuffling some cars around on the Tube Spur (former Michigan Central double track main). The sun happened to be doing its best to fight through a small break in the clouds here, which I was quite grateful for as this specific move was something I had yet to see, though I had seen MPRX 101 out and about on the Tube Spur <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43285" target="_blank">once before</a>. The building to the right is the ex-Stelpipe facility (and most recently ex-Martech facility - see link <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39708" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43709" target="_blank">here</a> ), where K&K is now <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=45076" target="_blank">infamously scrapping Dash 8s</a>. <br><br>The tubes are a somewhat interesting operation in the sense that they have a trackmobile that moves cars within the plant confines, the centrecab that moves loads/empties between the plant and the Tube Spur, Trillium using ex-Stelco 615 formerly and now GMTX 340 currently to shuffle loads/empties between the Tube Spur and CN Southern Yard (about a km or so away), and CN L562 picking up/dropping off loads and empties from there. A lot of different hands on these cars in a very short distance.

The sun is doing its best to fight through drifting forest fire smoke as CP 2317 leads for the 1559 Yard Job as they head westbound on the north track of the Nipigon Sub with a pull of empties from the Richardson elevator in the Current River area of Thunder Bay. The signal protects the diamond with the CN Kashabowie Sub, movements over which are controlled by CN RTC.

After dropping cars at Parkdale Warehousing, the crew of the 0700 Yard Job heads back towards their train, waiting for them near Brampton Street/Strathearne Ave. Next up would be Parkland Fuels, but with clouds rolling in, it was just a quick couple shots for me on this day.

CP 6225 on point for the CP 1559 Yard Job (yes... 1559) as they work the G3 elevator in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This particular yard job runs conventionally (as does the 2359), while some others for CP in town run beltpack. I was told by CN crews in Thunder Bay that was a rare daylight appearance for CP here, as they have to use the CN Mission Spur to access this location, and normal times they do so are between 2330 and 0530.

I recently posted <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46440" target="_blank">a shot of CP TH21 westbound at Depew Street</a> in Hamilton on the CP Beach Branch, and now offer a view of a CP TH21 westbound at Depew Street on the CN N&NW Spur. Same crossing, different tracks and view. In this particular instance, they are shoving back onto their own rails after pulling ahead on the N&NW Spur to pull the interchange.

While waiting for <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=45714" target="_blank">this C93 to come over</a>, I heard my true target for the evening - CP TE21 - give a track release on the Hamilton Sub so that CP 254 could get headroom for their work in Welland. I knew C93 was close so I waited it out for them and grabbed a few shots and then went directly to this spot for TE21. On the way there I heard them restore the switch for the Montrose so knew I'd be cutting it real close. Sure enough, headlights were already in view when I got here to Yokom Road to watch TE21 roll past with two cars for Washington Mills in Niagara Falls.

On an overcast day in Thunder Bay, I didn't really feel like taking cloudy shots around town so I decided I'd go for a little road trip west along the Trans Canada to Ignace, after hearing that this pair was still tied down in the yard. Worst case scenario I figured I'd at least see some new sights along the way. As I got closer to Igance, the sun started making the odd appearance, and I managed to get a little break in the clouds for a few shots of CP 5866 and CP 3649. Despite the clouds, it was a rather hot day so I treated myself to a swim in Agimak Lake afterwards - what more could you ask for in July? <br><br> This shot was taken a little over two weeks after David Young took <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46281" target="_blank">this image of Ignace</a>.

CP 3042 leads CP TH11 eastbound on the Beach Branch with what appears to be one tank for Ruetgers, one gon for AIM, and four for the interchange (two meal hoppers for Bunge, one food oil tank for Bunge, and one loaded centrebeam for the Grimsby Sub).

CSXT 379 heads up CN U701 in the final stretch of their journey into Thunder Bay with 100 loads of coke destined for unloading at Thunder Bay Terminals Ltd. (TBTL). This train was into town shortly after noon, and tied down in Neebing Yard. The 1555 CN Yard Job took it over to TBTL with a CP pilot that afternoon and handed it over to the TBTL crew around 1800, and the next day by 0445 it had been unloaded and had departed Thunder Bay altogether to head back to Minnesota to be handed back over to UP. Pretty efficient operation.

CP's 0630 yard job is pictured crossing the Jackknife Bridge in Thunder Bay with the 8100 solo and 85 loads of potash from Mosaic on the drawbar. The potash had come in previously on a 620 which was joint unit potash and grain. The 85 loads are destined for Thunder Bay Terminals Ltd, which was a busy place in my week in town, handling quite a bit of potash as well as 100 loads of coke from CN. <br><br>The bridge, which is a rather impressive structure, was completed in April 1913 and formerly had two functioning decks - one for rail (lower) and another for cars (upper), which was dismantled in 2004. For those curious to see, David Young previously offered <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=1479" target="_blank">this view</a> of the other side of the bridge.
