After running into a few distractions (aka trains) on my way from Saskatoon, I had just gotten to the Keppel area and was familiarizing myself with the terrain. Over the scanner I heard that 808 was near, with the 8913 on point. I found my first location for the day where I watched a pair of M-2s lead a 178 car grain empty (with mid-train DPU) eastbound.

This is a pretty cool critter that probably has a lot of stories to tell, given that it has been on the property here in Port Colborne at what is now Vale since it was purchased new in 1953. Different owners and a repaint, but it's quite remarkable to think it's been at the same site for 67 years and counting. The facility itself is in its 102nd year, and the building in the backdrop is original albeit with a new siding. <br><br>Vale receives service from CN, who runs the Humberstone Spur from CN Yager down to Vale's facility in Port Colborne. Vale pays for all maintenance of the line, which is performed by Allied at present. Some relatively significant maintenance work was done on the line in the Spring of 2019, which is hopefully a good sign for the line's future. They receive tanks of chlorine and tanks of sulphur dioxide, both of which are needed for their processes with cobalt (I won't pretend to know anything beyond that), and I am told they fire the critter up about once a week to shuffle things around. <br><br>I have shot CN on the Humberstone a few times, two of which were trips for Vale. One trip with a chlorine tank in a tow (link <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37831" target="_blank">here</a>) and another time I got there just after they made a set off and were switching ends to head back to Port Robinson (link <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37474" target="_blank">here</a>). <br><br>This photo was taken on Vale property with prior permission obtained from Vale.

My family needed someone to run to the Niagara area today, so knowing 4410 was around I volunteered and added a generous amount of wiggle room to my travel time. I have a rough idea of a typical day for TE11 (switching Welland Yard, transfer run to Trillium at Feeder and CN at Southern Yard, and some more puttering around the yard), so I tried to time it such that I'd be there for the run back from interchange at CN Southern Yard. Pictured here, SOO 4410 leads CP TE11 on the CN Stamford Sub, over top of the CP Hamilton Sub on its way back to Welland Yard. You can see the tops of autoracks currently stored in Rusholme Siding at both bottom left and right. The tanks and hoppers in tow appear to all be for Innophos in Port Maitland, which CP TE21 visits twice a week on Tuesday and Friday nights (or Wednesday and Saturday mornings depending how you want to look at it). On this day they set off at Feeder and made no lift there, and brought seven or so tanks/hoppers from Innophos back to CN at Southern Yard and lifted the 20 or so pictured.

After <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39938" target="_blank">lifting two empties out of Agris</a>, 514 pulled them east across Victoria Road (County Road 21). They're now pictured here on the east side of Victoria Road after having run around the two empties, and are nearly ready to depart west for Chatham. Fortunately, after a mostly overcast beginning to the day, the sun was doing its best at this point to fight through the clouds.

It was a gorgeous Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend, and I'd spent the morning back home at the Norfolk County Fair watching the horse pulls and eating some junk food - a Thanksgiving tradition. Couldn't have asked for a much nicer day for railfanning so I eventually meandered up towards the Dundas Sub in the afternoon where I figured at minimum I'd have a 435 to shoot. Ended up catching 331 in Paris as they came off the north service track and back onto their train to depart, and 435 was right behind it. I shot both trains at Paris West, and with 331 ahead of 435 and both trains on the north track, 435 wasn't moving all too quickly so it was pretty easy to get out ahead of them for one more shot in Creditville before heading back to Simcoe for some turkey dinner.

I was in no rush to post this, but the whereabouts of GEXR 2303 came up in discussion on <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=40011" target="_blank">Steve's recent upload</a> of a GEXR plow extra in 2015 so figured the timing was right. In this shot, 2303 had just returned from taking tanks over to Franklin Yard and will soon proceed back south into the refinery where it is one of the units that handles switching duties. 591 is pictured further north, where it was waiting for 2303 to clear. On this day 591 was a solo 2081. 2111 was originally paired with it, but the engineer cut it loose in Garnet on account of not liking that unit. 2081 could handle the duties on its own as 591 was relatively small given that the refinery was on a maintenance shutdown at the time.

Matt Watson has been posting some pretty killer shots from the Keppel area lately, so figured I'd get in on the fun. It is a great area to railfan, with pretty steady action and no shortage of different vantages to try out. I was further west towards Biggar when this eastbound snuck up on me, so I hit the grid and the chase was on. I managed to finally reach that sweet spot in the chase where I was slightly ahead (read - seconds ahead) and saw an angle that looked interesting enough to shoot, so I jumped out of the rental and this was the result, with 196 rolling past recently harvested fields and a couple of combines resting in the foreground. This would be the second last train I would shoot on my summer trip to Saskatchewan.

On the west end of Moose Jaw, visible in <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39042" target="_blank">this shot of the west end of the yard</a>, is the Viterra terminal. On this morning, K39 with the 6254 solo, lifted about 70 or so loads. They did this in two trips - in the first trip they lifted about 40+ hoppers and took them into the yard, and in the second visit to Viterra they pulled 30 cars out. They did the second batch in two trips, setting the first set of loads on the north track of the main before going back to get the rest and then doubling up on the main to head back to the yard. It's a decent grade from Viterra up to the main and they put on a good show in the process.

CN 514, with 7038 and 4130, has made the decent into Agris in Thamesville to lift two empties. It's quite the grade down off the Chatham Sub, and you can see the switch stand to the right of 4130. I'd also shot <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37006" target="_blank">4777 on the grade itself</a>, back in May 2018. This particular 514 did not go to Blenheim, and also did not take any loads to Thamesville. Because their only work required using the north track on the Chatham Sub in Thamesville, it took them more than two hours to even move in Chatham. They're ordered for 0800, but didn't get moving until after 1000 on account of the two VIAs that come through Chatham on the Chatham Sub. Compounding my impression of the lack of a productive day, this train ran for the express purpose of lifting the two empties from Thamesville. After they lifted the empties, they pulled them across to the east side of Victoria Road (County Road 21), where they ran around the train for the return trip to Chatham. That was the extent of the day. I'd long just assumed this vantage of 514 coming into Agris was private property - part of the Agris facility itself - so I had never shot here before. It turns out that it's actually a public road - Railway Line. Pays to go down the Google Maps rabbit hole sometimes.

One of two yard sets in London waits as 438 was yarding a relatively large train. I believe this is the power they're using presently on jobs such as 583 and 584. Not long after 438 got into the yard, this set was on the move again to work the yard. The other set - 4130 and 7038 - was lifted by 439 for its return trip to Windsor and was set off in Chatham for December 28's 514.

1401 leads the Cayuga Clipper towards St. Thomas on the St. Thomas Sub, early on a December morning. Rare to see an F Unit assigned to this job, as OSR "doesn't like to send the good paint down the Cayuga." If you're wondering why, just check out <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=38384" target="_blank">this shot</a> in Tillsonburg from July.

Winter scenes have been few and far between so far in southern Ontario, but there was a stretch in mid-November when things got fairly cold. I was in Peterborough for work for a few days and took the opportunity to take in some of the sights of the Havelock and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39457" target="_blank">Nephton Subs</a>, including this scene one Thursday night in Havelock. I am not even entirely sure what the story on this caboose is - some non-credible search results indicate it may be a tourist office, while another says small railway museum. If anyone knows for certain, I'd be curious to know.

SOR's last day of operations in Hamilton was December 13, 2018, and a couple of us were out that day to document the final action at <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35804" target="_blank">P&H</a> and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36333" target="_blank">Parkdale Warehousing</a>. Since then, 4003 has sat stored serviceable at G&W's Railcare facility in Hamilton. I hadn't really paid it much mind, other than glancing over every time I passed by to see if it had moved or had finally left the property. I figured though I should grab one shot of it at least, and the nice soft light a couple of weeks ago was hard to pass on. The silos in the background belong to Bell & MacKenzie which I believe is in the abrasives/sandblasting business in some capacity. They receive rail service, and if you seen CN or CP in the industrial area with two-bay hoppers, there's a very good chance those are going to or coming from Bell & MacKenzie. I don't think the track into that facility is in very good shape, as I once heard CP crews questioning each other as to whether they should even have the power past a certain point.

Not an original or imaginative shot by any means, but one of those ones that if you can do, you should do at least once. Here, the St. Thomas job stretches onto the old Wabash bridge over Athletic Park as they sort through cars from CN. Lots of traffic for OSR in the yard lately, mostly LPG.

After landing in the airport in Saskatoon and grabbing my rental, I booked it out of town to the Watrous, specifically to this spot - CN Hawoods. From my limited experience, quite a few meets take place here at Hawoods and that's what I was headed for. Sure enough, when I got there I found 114 (pictured at left) waiting in the hole. I knew it wouldn't be long for a westbound to come out of town, as this is the first spot for meets west of Saskatoon. Sure enough, 119 (pictured right) was along not soon after. I stuck around to shoot 114 departing, then grabbed <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=38905" target="_blank">196 a little further west</a>. I wasn't in the area much longer, and soon headed south for <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=38836" target="_blank">Craik</a>, <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39128" target="_blank">Aylesbury</a>, Moose Jaw, and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=38885" target="_blank">Mortlach</a>.

I mentioned in <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39768" target="_blank">this shot of 108</a> that 1859 was out too, and on a whole, things were productive around Niagara on this morning. Here, 1859 has just come off the Canal Spur and onto the Harbour Spur, headed for Port Colborne with tanks for Jungbunzlauer and a couple of grain hoppers for the Port. There were hoppers sitting around the old Robin Hood mill too, so they may have had work there as well. I ventured on to other things though, and didn't follow 1859 further south on this particular day. The tanks in the background are on 108's train, which was waiting shy of the switch for 1859 to clear. The tanks are from the biodisel plant, headed for interchange at Feeder.

With the previous day's 330 rolling past the cleanup of a two-day old derailment, I don't think CN will be asking to use this image to demonstrate operational excellence anytime soon. The story here - 555, operating with the triple set, put some boxcars on the ground in Parkdale Yard on Friday night. By the looks of it, the 0800 crew was dispatched with the double set on Sunday morning to help with the cleanup. When 300 got to Hamilton Sunday morning, the yard crew working in Stuart asked if they were really early or really late. The answer was that they never even left Sarnia on Saturday on account of not having a crew, and didn't leave until early Sunday morning. <br><br>Before this shot, a couple of follies compounded the situation - 330 was stopped completely in Parkdale Yard for a good 20 or 30 minutes, sitting in the approach to the crossing and completely fouling traffic on Parkdale Ave. Meanwhile, it looked like the cleanup crew had the boxcar in the image back on the rails and went to pull ahead, only to put it back on the ground with a bang.

It was a productive morning in Niagara - 108 and 1859 were out for Trillium, <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39733" target="_blank">CP TE11 was interchanging</a> with Trillium and CN, and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39708" target="_blank">Martech was switching their facility</a>. Here, 108 is pictured westbound on the Canal Spur (about halfway between WH Yard and Feeder), with a string of tanks for Feeder to be set off for interchange with CP and/or CN. They had come to WH Yard with a handful of tanks from the biodiesel plant, and tacked on maybe eight or so others in WH. After making the setoff at Feeder, they returned to the biodiesel plant where they worked for the day.
