The picture was taken during the summer of 1988 and for some reason I can't find the exact date. The time of day would have been around 1800 hrs. The big surprise was finding the BCR rail grinder sitting on a siding near the station. It was shut down and the crew were out of site. I was told latter that the rail grinder was returned to the builder after CN took over & was scrapped. The van at the rear of the rail grinder is #1801 and the station can be seen on the right side of the picture.

Virginia Truckee #22 was a visitor during Steam Expo 86 in Vancouver BC. The locomotive along with combine #9 came up from Carson City Nevada. The Steam Expo was well attended & there were quite a few locomotives & all types of equipment on display. The Steam Expo had a good mixture of American & Canadian steam locomotives. The site itself is a CN yard that is still in use today.

When at Revelstoke there is nothing like a fill up, an oil check, and having your windows cleaned all while enjoying a nice fall rain wash. While there, you could get lots of pictures from the edge of the property without trespassing but you could get better pictures if you signed a release and walked around the shop area.

Kamloops was a place that I ether had a project in, or was a place that I stopped to visit while traveling through. A drive to the old CP station was often rewarded with some older locomotives sitting on the north side of the tracks. In this case I caught CP 1626 sitting buy itself so I took a couple of pictures of it. Looking at the photograph it must have been a great day weather wise. Everything there has changed since I last visited Kamloops so the picture is just a small piece of history. I was all ways happy when I could catch an old locomotive, an old piece of rolling stock, or an old RY building.

The CP train from Trail BC had just arrived at Nelson and had almost stopped a bit short of the crew change area. The head end locomotives where CP 5831, 5720, & 5590. The sun was down low which lit train up quite well. I would think that almost 100% of the revenue on that section of track comes from the large Teckmine site in Trail.

The area around the roundhouse and diesel shop was fairly quiet on the 10th of Dec 1986. This allowed me to wander around a bit. Both sides of the diesel shop were lined with locomotives so I tried to photograph each one separately. When I got to CP 6003 I managed catch it standing alone, and with a cleaner coming out of the cab. I have attaching the photo with cleaner at the cab door because I think it is the most interesting one.

[Editors note: Likely a very rare image of a long ago scrapped locomotive] CPR 4039 (FP&A) was built in 1951 @ London Ont. Serial #A 245. Class DFA-150. Had both types of CPR lettering during it's life time. The locomotive was wrecked in 1971 and scrapped in Calgary. Originally numbered 4039, then numbered 1434, & then back to 4039. This (renumbering) explains why the locomotive had both types of lettering over it's lifetime. In the attached photograph CPR 4039 is sitting just south of the Brandon Manitoba CPR yard office. It and CP 3004 are sitting there by themselves. I believe that CP 3004 was on it's way to the west coast. As for the year! I am not sure. I know it was in the spring and I know it was in the late 1960's. This is the only color photograph of CPR 4039 that I can find.

I have no idea why I was in Quesnel on the date of the photograph! Probably something to do with the federal building. The picture was taken near the station, & what I liked about it is the three local natives working in and on BCR 603. Time wise it was early evening. The locomotive had my favorite paint job & the three workers just put the icing on the cake. Usually I never saw a BCR engineer at work, but in this case even he had his head out the cab window. Often wonder what they thought of us train nuts taking their pictures. Their are many places in Canada were you would never get this close yard activities but but in Quesnel you could easily take photographs without putting anyone in danger.

I all ways enjoyed staying over night in Quesnel BC. It had this nice motel located almost across the street from BCR station. There was lots of activity in the yard so I took many photographs during the late afternoon, early evening period. This photograph shows BCR 710 & 717 working together as they travel north. Look closely and you can see how they were painted differently. For example one has an Expo 86 on the fuel tank and the other does not. At the time of their repainting the railway was owned by the BC government who's motto was if it moved paint it red, white, & blue. Locomotives, buses, golf carts, etc, you name it! Made for some interesting though! You never knew what you were going to see.

Normally I took all my BCR pictures in North Vancouver,Williams Lake,or Quesnell. On the day I took the attached picture of BCR 617 I was in North Vancouver enjoying a beautiful sunny day and the freedom to slowly wander the BCR yard & shop area. The locomotive sat in the wash rack and I thought it would make an interesting picture! Hope you enjoy it!
Today all that was there is long gone and the CN RY has control of the area. I guess that the little sign that said "NO CN Locomotives beyond THIS POINT" is long gone also.

BCR 4602 & 4605 had just arrived at the CN shops in Port Mann and were sitting on the south side of the building. More than likely they had just completed their journey from north Vancouver. I took a picture of each one alone but I did not photograph them together. I always liked the BCR locomotives in the old green & yellow colors. I never liked the political blue,red, & white colors.

Little VIA 6907 is headed east towards Toronto on the day of the attached photograph.

The area around the CN station is where I grew up in so for the last 75 years or so I have keeping an eye all the changes, and there have been lots of them. Gone are the steam & electric locomotives that serviced CN & L&PS areas. Gone are the NYC & Pennsylvania passenger cars that occasionally stopped there. No more coal yard serviced by the L&PS, Stations that have been removed and or replaced.

I remember asking the village secretary what happened to the old CPR train station that served Myrnam in the old days. I was sure she would tell me the building was demolished many years ago, but to my surprise she said it's still around and sitting (in two pieces) on a farm just north of town. After getting permission from the farmer I drove up to the site. However getting to the actual building was interesting. I had to slide under the gate while avoiding the many existing cow patties before I could walk up to the building. The fact that the farmer had intended to make a new residence by modifying the old Myrnam CPR station was clearly illustrated by the new concrete foundation it sat on. Unfortunately the local youth had some parties there and as a result did some major damage to the interior and exterior fixtures. The farmer asked me not to divulge the actual location and I have not. The GPS numbers are for the station's actual/original location in town. The station was built as a "CPR western lines standard A-3"station.

Revelstoke had some really great weather in the summer! However this photograph was taken in the fall when it liked to rain a lot! If I wanted to take photographs in the yard I signed my life away first, & then proceeded to wander around. Normally CP employees will notice a stranger quite quickly & question them. I wore a white hard hat that said "Canada" on the front of it so I got noticed real quick. Are you from "Transport Canada" they would ask and I would smile and say no. That answer got the employees to relax and forget I was there. For safety reasons hard hats are necessary, but they are also great for keeping your head dry.
All ways something good to see in Revelstoke in the 1980's but I guess you have to go to the newer CP yard in Golden BC now.

Attached is the rear (street side) view of the Vegreville CN station. In this view you can see the restaurant sign & some flag poles. I never took the time to dine there so I have no idea what the interior looked like.

The CPR station in Vegreville is located about 2 blocks from the CNR station. Currently there are no tracks anywhere near it and it is currently being used as a bottle depot. The interior has been modified slightly, but a lot of the original features are still there. It's foot print is smaller than that of the local CN station.
Track wise, the the CPR Vegreville station was located at the south end of a branch that came down from the village of Willingdon AB. Only two railway related structures remain from the abandoned branch lines use. One is the Vegreville station and the other is grain elevator used by a local Warwick farmer.

This photograph was taken shortly after I had moved to a VERY small town north of Vegreville AB! All I can remember is that I had stopped to photograph some CN locomotives that were waiting for clearance to proceed on to LLoydminster AB. The locomotives had stopped near a convenience store which was a perfect spot for the crew to use to their advantage. (foot prints in the snow do not lie) The sky was clear and the temp. was VERY cold, but by being the ex-army type that I was I immediately got out of my van and photographed the locomotives, and the nearby retired CN station. The station was used as a restaurant at the time. The attached photograph is the track side elevation of the station.

At the date of the photograph the CPR was using the old station as an office and crew change facility. The area saw a lot of trains on a daily basis so taking photographs from the platform was the only thing one could do safely. The lead locomotive was CP 5959 followed by CP 5864 & 5933. The photo is a little lighter than the negative shows but I think it is clearer. When roaming BC I usually traveled by car which allowed me to stop when saw something interesting. Kamloops is a good example of how I traveled. If I was not working there I could at least drop down to the station area while passing through on the TCH. There was all ways something to see in BC. Both on the main lines and on the branch lines.
