Running late on a cold February day, CPBU makes its appearance at Kinnear Yard. Today's power is Conrail GP40-2 3317, GP38-2 8231, another CR GP38-2 and a TH&B GP7. In a little over two months, Conrail power through Hamilton on a daily basis will be history when CP takes possession of the eastern end of the Canada Southern and integrates it into the TH&B as "CP Rail (CASO)".

NW-2 #51, the TH&B's first diesel-electric locomotive (built in December 1947), is seen handling Van #82 at Aberdeen Yard on June 1, 1975. The 51 is now owned by the Ontario Southland Railway.

Downgraded in 1995, Aberdeen Yard was transformed into a steel and plastic transloading facility. With a colourful consist including AC4400CW CP #9823, SD-40M-2 CEFX #3105, SD-40-2 ICE #6217, SD-40-2 HLCX #6844 and SD-60 CEFX #6011 (ex SOO), CP Train #255 lifts a cut of coil cars on October 30, 2011.

In July 1976, there was a chemical fire near Mimico on the Oakville sub which caused CN train 73 to detour over the Halton sub as a passenger extra (hence the white flags). It arrived a couple of hours late, proceeding past the station to the eastward signals at what was then known as Burlington, then backed up for its station stop before continuing west to London and Windsor(presumably assuming its normal schedule authority. (Unfortunately, I don't have the exact date. Burlington CTC plant was renamed Burlington West when the current GO station opened around 1988.)

CN train 144 drifts down the grade into Bayview behind Tempo RS18 3152 on a fine September afternoon in 1973. At the time, CN ran four pairs of passenger trains to/from Windsor, one to/from London, three trains to/from Sarnia, and three trains to/from Niagara Falls through Bayview. Still more ran via "the back route" through Guelph and Kitchener.

In this late fall 1985 photo, we have N&W C30-7 8077 and a C36-7 idling at the CN roundhouse in Windsor. Only six C30-7s (and an SD40-2) were painted in the "maroon" version of the N&W paint scheme.

In this photo we have Canadian Pacific train 21 from Montreal and Toronto changing to New York Central power at the "Michigan Central" Windsor station (known in CN-CP days as CN "Windsor South"). CP power is a pair of passenger RS10s (8479 and 8469); NYC power is three GP7s (5819, 5825, and an unidentified unit).

In 1962, this train originated in Montreal at 10:15 PM and arrived in Toronto at 7:00 AM, traveling via Peterborough. It departed Toronto at 8:00 AM and arrived in Windsor at 1:30 PM, departing at 1:40 after the power change and arriving in Detroit 10 minutes later. (This train also handled sleeping cars for Hamilton which were transferred to train 321 departing Toronto at 8:05.) According to the 1962 public timetable: "Drawing Rooms, Compartments, Bedrooms, Roomettes, Duplex Roomettes, Standard Berths, Meal Service. Parlor Car (meal service) on trains 21 and 22 between Toronto and Windsor." At one time, there was through sleeper service to Chicago but, by the time of this photo, passengers had to change to a 5:15 PM departure for Chicago.

In 1962, CP had three trains in each direction between Toronto and Windsor. Two round trips were covered by Dayliners (Budd RDCs). The conventional train third trip was changed to an RDC in April 1964.

I wonder why the photographer took this photo from the angle that he did...was he unwilling to get out of the car and walk in closer or was he trying to get an overview of this classic facility?

In any case, I'm glad the photo was taken the way it was, showing some detail of the facilities in Windsor. For, in less than three years time, CN and CP will purchase the Canada Southern then CN will re-route its trains through an upgraded Van de Water yard in December 1985. Norfolk Southern trains continued to operate on the Chatham sub until late September 1991 when CSX granted NS trackage rights between Fargo and Chatham.

The units are N&W GP35 2913 and GP38-2 4161.

Windsor must have been quite the location, "back in the day". At one time, CN and N&W operated their own car ferry operations just west of this engine service facility, next to the station and yard. CP also had a car ferry, in addition to the Detroit River Tunnel operated by the Canada Southern and its successors.

Today, all is quiet as two Canadian-built F7A units wait to take their train eastward to St. Thomas and Fort Erie. At the time, two trains were scheduled in the timetable: No. 28 departing yard limits Tecumseh at 1500 (arriving St. Thomas at 1800; departing St. Thomas at 1815 and arriving Duff, the west end of Fort Erie yard, at 2115) and No. 90 departing at 0001 (arriving St. Thomas at 0300; departing 0315 and arriving Duff at 0615). Westbound trains operated as extras.

If I remember correctly, CN stopped ferrying cars across at Windsor in 1974 (diverting traffic to Sarnia) but Norfolk Southern's ferry operations only ending in 1994, after they were granted trackage rights through the Detroit River Tunnel and the tunnel was expanded to handle autoracks.

They must have been independent types at the St. Thomas backshop, coming up with their own version of the Conrail "blue" paint scheme. Several units received this version of paint, before more senior officers in the States put an end to this practice.

This unit was formerly NYC 6040 and PC 7440, originally equipped with a steam generator as a back-up unit for the passenger trains operating on the Canada Division. She was delivered in April 1957.

By the late 1970s, St. Thomas had become a quiet railroad town. For a railfan based in Hamilton, the game plan was to drive down to the Cayuga sub and try to pick up the N&W while driving west to St. Thomas. Shoot whatever was in town at the C&O and CASO (now Conrail), drive up to London to see what was at Quebec Street (remember, CP was a bit different for Hamilton fans back then) and finally hang out on CN and maybe see some trains in the new VIA paint.

Unfortunately, April 15, 1978 was a very dull day. However, a GP7 in full Conrail paint was still a nice catch two years after Conrail start-up.

Here's one for Mr. Berry!

LaSalle used to have an interesting variety of trains--as long as you brought some patience. Mid-late afternoon you often would get the outbound Conrail to Selkirk, the "NJ" (Napierville Junction/Delaware & Hudson) train to Rouses Point, a southbound CP, and maybe the CP local or yard engine.

Today we have northbound Conrail train SECP with two SD50s, 6806 and 6720. Bigger power has replaced the B23-7s which used to be common on this train.

In the mid 1970s, N&W was operating two trains in each direction across the Cayuga sub. Westbounds ran as extras, one typically leaving Fort Erie early in the morning. Today we have N&W's only Canadian-built GP7 (the 3453), GP9 2479, and an unidentified F7A leading the train.

A very short SECP (Selkirk, NY-CP St. Luc Montreal) passes through St. Lambert, Quebec on a fine summer evening. The train is detouring over CN due to the Oka Crisis which has closed the Conrail-CP route through Kahnawake. C40-8Ws 6071 and 6083 power the four car train.

In many ways, this photo is symbolic of the evolution of the Canadian rail industry. The location, of course, is the Stuart Street yard in Hamilton, once the hub of the historic Great Western Railway and later an important centre on the Grand Trunk. It became a regional hub for Canadian National until downsizing reduced its importance in the 1990s. This was followed by out-sourcing to the short line Southern Ontario Railway in 1997 (represented by former Railink GP 4003 in this photo). These smaller railroads were consolidated under Rail America and later Genesee & Wyoming (represented by Quebec-Gatineau GP35u 2500 in G&W paint). And now a form of re-birth, as the "West Harbour" area of Hamilton is transformed from a former industrial area to an urban residential area complete with GO Station. And the "circle of life" will complete later this year as this facility becomes a CN operation once again.
