The Bay Street bridge in Hamilton has long been a favourite location for photographers wanting to catch rail action in Hamilton. While a lot of the track configuration is similar to years past, gone are the yard office and express facilities constructed in the early 1960s, the engine servicing and container/piggyback facilities, as well as the industries north of the CN yard. Taking their place are a Cargo-flo facility, new buildings for Hamilton-based staff, a new CTC controlled location (Stuart), and a new commuter rail station with customer parking (West Harbour--between the site of the Great Western/Grand Trunk stations and 1930s CN James Street North station). On a bitterly cold winter's day, we see GO Transit MP40-PH-3C 653 ready to lead the hourly train to Toronto Union Station and Oshawa while CN ET44AC 3197 and ES44AC 3945 (a former CREX bought by CN in 2021) on train 421 prepare to leave Hamilton for Port Robinson after a crew change (with ES44AC 3844 as DPU). The GP38-2s at the right, 4705 and 4726, have just been set off by 421 which also lifted the parts cars on the head end of the train.

St-Henri was a favourite location of mine in the mid-late 1980s. Close to my downtown apartments, one could catch VIA's Toronto and Ottawa trains here (including "The Canadian" which ran with a Skyline dome until 1987, if I recall correctly); CN through freights to and from the Maritimes which often had MLW power; CN freights to St. Albans (CV)/Rouses Point (D&H)/Island Pond (Grand Trunk New England)/Massena (Conrail); and transfers with RS18s and/or GP9s to CN points on the South Shore and around Pointe St. Charles. Here we see VIA train No. 32 from Ottawa whose FPA4 6775 is assisted by leased CN GP40-2LW 9431. VIA's F40PH-2s will start arriving in late 1986, ending CN power leases to improve winter service reliability.

It now seems hard to believe that at one time five railways competed for Niagara Frontier-Michigan/midwest U.S. traffic through southern Ontario over multiple routes. Former Conrail C40-8W 8373 trails C40-9W 9554 in what truly is a "going away photo" of the last NS 328 (as this is posted, 15 years ago today).

On a day fitting the occasion, NS train 328 crosses southern Ontario for the last time. Units 9554 and 8373 pass the Ingersoll station, exercising trackage rights over Grand Trunk lines dating from March 1898. 15 years ago, CN had won the contract for Talbotville Ford traffic but it was a short lived victory--that plant closed in September 2011. The Ingersoll station itself (dating from the late 1880s) was demolished on December 7, 2020.

Sometimes you find a gem online...Here we have TH&B GP9s 402 and 403 riding the turntable at the CPR John Street roundhouse in Toronto in the summer of 1958. I'm a little puzzled about this one--my understanding is that run-through power on the Toronto-Buffalo trains ceased after the TH&B and NYC dieselized in 1954 but CP continued to use steam between Toronto and Hamilton. However, this photo and others show that TH&B power at least handled passenger trains over the Oakville sub. Any insights out there? (Thanks to Steve Host for his help cleaning this one up.)

Thirty years ago, the Boxing Day edition of Ontario Northland train No. 121 rolls through King City on its way from Toronto to Cochrane. This was the last winter for this routing...If I recall correctly, by February 1992 the TEE equipment had been replaced by rebuilt GO Transit cars and the train moved to the Bala sub. VIA continued to operate its tri-weekly Canadian through here until September 1996; Metrolinx bought its portion of the Newmarket sub in December 2009 (including through King City).

For years, the Napierville Junction's train originated in Rouses Point, NY and ran to Montreal with a couple of MLW built RS2 units. After they were retired, the D&H would assign whatever they had laying over in Rouses Point. After the D&H was integrated into Guilford in the early 1980s, this could include Maine Central and Boston & Maine units--such as B&M GP40-2s 304 and 308, as well as GP39-2 350 (originally built for the D&H). Guilford cast the D&H into bankruptcy in 1988 and by 1991 it was integrated into CP Rail System and run-through operations became the norm.

In mid-January 1986, the Adirondack's Montreal terminal moved to Central Station and the train was re-routed over CN between Rouses Point, NY and Montreal. (That made the Adirondack the last inter-city train to use CP's Windsor Station!) Here we see the train approaching St-Lambert and in a few moments it will be crossing the Victoria Bridge and the St. Lawrence River on the last leg of its journey from New York City. On the left you can see a CN M420W, used on one of the south shore locals based out of St-Lambert.

From its inception on October 31, 1982 until January 14, 1990 joint VIA-Amtrak train the "International" ran over CN's Oakville and Dundas subdivisions to London. Originally, Amtrak's "Blue Water" terminated in Port Huron, Michigan and after the successful introduction of the New York-Toronto "Maple Leaf" in April 1981, Amtrak and VIA came to an agreement for a jointly operated train. Re-routing over "the back route" through Guelph and Kitchener at the time of the 1990 VIA cuts added an hour to the schedule and then the discontinuance of on-board U.S. Customs inspections at Port Huron after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks made the trip even less attractive. (Passengers had to board buses and clear customs at the Bluewater bridge for six months.) Initially, VIA and Amtrak provided equipment for one of the two train sets which evolved to a VIA locomotive and Amtrak cars both ways in the mid-1990s (single level until November 1995 and Superliner equipment--occasionally replaced by Horizon cars--thereafter). At the end, Amtrak was providing both the locomotive and cars in both directions. The last westbound "International" ran on April 23, 2004.

Even in 1978, the crossing protections on Conrail's Canada Division were unique. So, please forgive the somewhat distant train--I wanted to make sure that I caught the "wig-wag" in the photo! Detroit-Buffalo train 64, the "Niagara Rainbow" somewhere east of St. Thomas behind a former Milwaukee Road E9. (Can anyone out there properly identify the location?)

One of Amtrak's trains with an "on again, off again" history is the Montrealer. Initially begun in 1972 (first southbound trip was September 30th), the train was suspended between April 1987 and July 1989 due to slow timing over Guilford track. Once restored, it ran on its overnight schedule for almost another six years before changed to a day train and originating at St. Albans, Vermont on April 1, 1995. Apparently the Montrealer was the first train to use Amtrak on-board personnel because there weren't any holdover staff from its private railroad predecessor. Here we see the southbound train making its first stop on its way to Washington at the Montreal suburb of St-Lambert behind F40PH 404.

Former Penn Central E8 264 leads Buffalo-Detroit train 63 across the Canada Southern in the summer of 1975. This service ran across southern Ontario from October 31, 1974 to January 31, 1979.Of extra interest is the baggage car still in NYC colors. (U.S. spelling since we are talking about Amtrak here!)

After early success with its French-built Turboliners, Amtrak ordered seven train sets based on the French design (but built by Rohr in California who had obtained a license from ANF. These trains used carbodies, wheels and engines brought from France while Rohr was responsible for the cabs and interiors. The trains were delivered in the second half of 1976 and assigned to "Empire State Service" in New York state, including runs to Montreal. In this photo we see nearly new car 159 leading the Adirondack past CP's Glen coach yard on the final lap of its trip from Grand Central station in New York to Windsor Station in Montreal. These train sets continued to serve Amtrak until the mid-1990s. The 159 was part of a group of cars removed from service for rebuilding in 1994 as the prototype for an "RTL II" modernization program. Alas, that was the only train set completed and it ran until 2002. (With supplemental information from Dale Johnson's book "Trail of the Turbo, The Amtrak Turboliner Story".)

After years of development and testing, two LRC train sets were built for Amtrak in 1980. Two locomotives (38 and 39), two club cars (40 and 45), and eight coaches (41-44 and 46-49) were leased to Amtrak with an option to buy that was not exercised. Amtrak used the LRCs between New York and Boston for a couple of years before returning them. While the locomotives were assigned VIA numbers (6941-6942), they never entered VIA service and were eventually scrapped by Bombardier. Nine of the passenger cars were modified by VIA and eventually used between Toronto and Chicago on the International. Orphans in the VIA fleet, the "Amtrak" LRC cars were removed from service early and finally retired in 2001. (With additional information from Eric Gagnon's Trackside with VIA book.)

CSX SD40-2 8005 (a former L&N/Seaboard System unit) and GP40-2 6364 (built for SCL) idle in front of the former Canada Southern/New York Central/Penn Central/Conrail station in St. Thomas after an overnight trip from Buffalo. Unusually, the power will be removed from this train and replaced by the inbound power from train 320, also at St. Thomas this Saturday morning; perhaps there was enough traffic to run an extra from points west that day.

Having arrived on CSXT train 320, units 7069 and 8356 prepare to depart St. Thomas South with train 321 on a fine spring morning in April 1992. Little did we know at that time that CSX operations on the CNCP Caso sub would end 4 years later when CN and CSX reached a haulage rights agreement for Buffalo traffic. (CSX trains on the Caso ended 25 years ago this month—April 1996; facilitating de facto abandonment between Fargo and Hewitt.)

When CSX rationalized its operations in Ontario in the late 1980s, it moved trains west of St. Thomas to the CN-CP owned CASO sub (January 1987) and shut down the Talbot yard and engine servicing in St. Thomas. Traffic was down to one train per day each way circa 1985 and 3 days/week east of St. Thomas (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) circa 1990. You will note in this photo only shows engines 8356 (a former Clinchfield/Seaboard System SD40) and 7069 (a former L&N/Seaboard System C30-7) and a caboose; the Buffalo cars have been left at Fargo (along with cars set off for CSX points on the Sarnia sub) because CN would only allow CSX to use side tracks in St. Thomas in case of emergency.
In 1993, CSX re-configured its operations to run trains 323/322 Sarnia-Detroit via Fargo and 320/321 Chatham- Buffalo. According to Mr. Mercer, it was a 12-14 hour trip to Buffalo. This eliminated the lift/setoff at Fargo and the CSX local dragging cars from Fargo back to Chatham.

25 minutes behind 382 with the CN Vetrans unit, the prize of the day came along--IC heritage unit 3008 leading train 384! (I always thought that a GE in IC black would look good...especially against snow.)

When VIA rationalized the transcontinental train services taken over from CN and CP in 1979, a barebones "remote service" train was established over CN's main line between Capreol and Winnipeg. This little two or three car train shuttled back and forth three times per week until the "Canadian" was permanently rerouted over CN lines in January 1990. (It's interesting how this was an "essential service" until this year when the now twice-weekly "Canadian" was suspended due to COVID...as this is written, Nos. 1 and 2 operate once per week west of Winnipeg but there is no service across isolated northern Ontario!)

Having received a "heads up" that the GTW Heritage unit would be leading into Toronto, I headed out to Snider (the entrance to MacMillan Yard) on Sunday morning. Patience was rewarded when train 450 from North Bay finally pulled into the yard around 1235 (after being held out due to congestion). Power was SD70M-2 8952, C40-8 2035, C44-9W 2552, and GP38-2W 4790 (probably returning from Huntsville).
