I live in the Cleveland Ohio area and have taken train pictures with a 35mm slide or digital camera since 1964. I've traveled around the United States and parts of Canada both professionally and for fun, most always with a camera and an eye toward the railroad tracks.

Environment Canada records show that the coldest temperature ever recorded at Toronto's Pearson airport was -31.3 °C on January 4, 1981. It might have been a few ticks warmer here at Rouge Park along the Lakefront east of Toronto where 4 frozen railfans from Cleveland started the day instead of being home to watch the Browns lose their best shot at the Super Bowl on a play now famously known as Red-Right 88. We had spent the night in Toronto and it was a real surprise that the vinyl seats our Chevy Nova didn't crack. But it did fire up pretty strong. The wind off the frozen lake here was brutal but we got a lot of good shots that weekend.

CP 5523 leading a westbound through a curve west of Woodstock on a frigid January 3, 1981. While preparing to submit this image, I realized that although the slide was labeled Woodstock, I did not remember exactly where to locate it on the map. Railpictures.ca's <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/map target=_blank> map feature </a> came to my rescue. Not only was I able to locate where it was taken but the image by James Gardiner <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=17571 target=_blank> http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=17571</a> is new enough (and mine old enough) to qualify for the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/time-machine> Time Machine</a> page. An amazing amount of vegetation has popped up.

One of the scenic highlights of the Algoma Central Railroad is the bridge over the hydroelectric dam at Montreal Falls. For our Labor Day weekend in 1981, several of us arranged with the power company for permission to drive back their private road to hang out and get a few shots at the dam. Once we were back there, one of the employees volunteered that the view was even better from on top of the little cabin they had there. So here's a southbound freight with 2 SD-40-2's and 2 GP7L's and lot of logs on the head end crossing over the Montreal River.

The ONR provided the only ground access to the northern community of Moosonee, ON. You can't drive here in the summer. In the summer the nearest road is 90 miles away. (Some winters there is an ice road). This is the modest facility at the far north end of the RR. Before moving to Texas in 1979, I rode some trains around Ontario with friends from work (not railfans), including the the Polar Bear Express pictured here. What a ride we had bouncing around in the light weight baggage car at the rear end of the train. July 27, 1979

The Ontario Northland provided a variety of transportation services for the province. they had buses, trucks, and of course trains. I was riding this day with a group of non railfan friends and had come in from Cochrane on the bus to transfer onto the train from Timmins to get down to North Bay. The ONR bought 4 Trans Europe Express trainsets in 1977. This one was wrecked in 1989 and scrapped.. The location is Porquis Jct where the line from Timmons joined with the line from Cochrane to go south to North Bay. July 29, 1979

GP-7 #74 arriving into the end of the branch to Port Maitland with a sizable train on February 28, 1982. The TH&B wasn't merged into the CP until 1987 but there was always the potential for mixed power evidenced by the RS-18 at the lashup.
