About awmooney

Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

[Editors note: Despite quality issues - content has been deemed appopriate] CP 5914 and 5911 are but 5 months old as witnessed in this May 13, 1979 view of the TH&B "Starlite" rolling Hamilton-bound thru the junction at Bayview. Other locomotives are CP 8751, TH&B 56 and a CP 81xx trailing. One has to express curiosity as to why railfans would wear almost white !!! clothes when out amongst the grease and the grime of the railway landscapes........and indeed why they are chancing the location that they are. Times and styles have changed. Railfans used to have the run of many locations without interference from authority. All this has a thing of the past, but many fans have not changed along with it. (How many have ever been hurt or killed while railfanning, would be an interesting statistic)Incidentally, the rusted track on the left is from the days when steam engines waited to assist westbound trains up the Dundas grade, a hold-over only because in the 1970s MoW equipment used this stub. The track has long since been removed.

$CP work extra with RS-18 8781, 8762 and another 87xx are seen here working near Westfield Beach, about 10 miles out of Saint John. All manual labour involved in contrast to todays all-purpose machinery. And a bit laid-back as well. With todays standards as a guide, can you spot any safety infractions???? :o)$

The anticipated beautiful day was almost as advertised, save for a stubborn haze in the distance, as NS autoparts train #328 made its way eastward down the grade at Dundas en route to Buffalo. Power is CP 5585, NS 6118, CP 5511 as witnessed from Dundas Peak. Alas, even this location is slowly deteriorating as a prime photo objective due to the increasing height of trees along the south side, which cast shadows over the tracks most of the mornings in the summer.

Two trains meet at the Lennoxville diamond. Quebec Southern Rwy 504 and 500,at Sherbrooke Sub., wait for thru freight BAR 350, AMTK 387 and HATX 176, a Canadian-American Rwy (CDAC) train on QSR trackage, mile 66. It will cross the diamond eastward and will then be travelling on CDAC rails. The QSR local is on CN Sherbrooke Sub. trackage. The in and out sun, a fixed lens and the general lay of the land made this a difficult place to shoot.At this time CDAC was part of the Bangor & Aroostook system (BAR).

After making sure the line was clear from Clinton Jct down to the end of steel at Centralia, GEXR 179 and plow x-CN 55437 start the run back north. They picked up one empty bulkhead at Centralia to take back with them.

A relatively early afternoon "Starlite" thru Bayview Junction results in an all-TH&B photo free of shadow. Power is TH&B 71, 73 and 75, a matched trio of GP7 locomotives. The #71 demo'd in a 1980 wreck, the #73 is now CP 1683 and #75 CP 1685; both based at Winnipeg and set up for remote control service.

A very overpowered and short CP #557 on February 5, 1993 was eagerly awaited by the local railfan population. No wonder!! It featured one-of-a-kind CP 8921 (RSD-17)followed by 4711 (M-636 converted to caterpillar engine in 1988)SD40-2 5601 (ret'd 2002), CP 4743 (another Big M) and SD40 5547 (ret'd by 2004) and maybe a dozen cars in tow. This image was taken on a rather warm morning for dead of winter, ground fog obvious from the Lemonville Rd bridge over the CN in Aldershot,ON.

Nice assortment of power on this morning westbound, seen approaching the Fairchild Creek trestle a couple of miles outside of Brantford. End of train is crossing Power Line Rd. Power is 3237, 4121, 9195 and 3118. Leaders such as this C-424 were getting rather scarce by 1984, quite a few had either been retired or sold off.

Back in those delightful days (for the fans) of no-end CP leasing, we see the Guelph Jct. turn westbound for the Jct with VIA 6456, HATX 216, VIA 6455 and CP 8241 passing thru Etobicoke on a crisp, clear March 12, 1995. This train wyed their power at Guelph Jct. before heading back east. Yes, it was power worth following.

[Editors note - accepted due to rarity - this is very rare mileage for a CP Train] This image needs an explanation, but unfortunately I do not have one. Here we see what appears to be the daily Toronto-Hamilton TH&B "Starlite" with CP 4564, 5545 and TH&B 74 coming off the CN 'Cowpath', of all places. The CP Goderich (now Hamilton) sub is in the foreground. Just by chance I happened upon this scene while checking out Bayview on an early summer evening. Too bad the shadow mars what is an image in nearly 40 years had never seen the likes of here before nor since.

The TH&B version of the Nanticoke Steel Train was just into its' third week when this photo was taken. B&O 4801, C&O 3885 and 4828 are seen crossing the highway 403 after exiting Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton. The train will travel westward thru Summit and Jerseyville before turning south at Brantford. Nowaday this line has been reduced to a hiking trail, track pulled many years ago after a washout in Brantford deemed too costly to repair. The background of this photo shows Hamilton Harbour and Aldershot in the distance.

Back in those great days of A-B-A lashups to power the CN version of "The Nanticoke" we have CN 9177, 9195 and 9166 idling by the shop at CN's Stuart St. yard., about ready to put a train together which will be led by 9166 down to Nanticoke and the 9177 returning. The 9177, retired by 1989 and eventually going to National Railway Equipment; has made the news as one of the F units recently acquired by the Norfolk Southern for use on the Executive Fleet.

This is a follow-up to Mike Lockwoods image (i.d. 7437)from that era of great variety on CP Rail. Leading NS autoparts train #328 is CP 672, a KCS castoff later seen as CP 5417 over the system. Unfortunately this unit never wore a "CP" on the nose as 672, but just 'CP Rail" in red on the flanks. Behind the 672 are NS 3273 and 6673. View of this eastbound is at CN Iron Br., around the curve out of sight is the bridge over Welland Canal.

While I was wandering at Campbellville this westward train came at me out of the early morning sun. So hopped in the car, booted it down the 401 to Woodstock and as far west as the bridge over the Middle Thames River in Thamesford before I thought I had a great place for a shot of this colourful power. Having come this far, it was nothing to wade into the muck pond and get the feet wet. CP 5490 (SD40M-2), HLCX 5007, HATX 924 and CP 5983 was the power. And that was all that would fit on this tight bridge shot. Beautiful warm morning; the kind of day being trackside is all about.

An image fitting for a "White Christmas" scene, this was actually taken on March 1, 2005 at Nelles Rd., in Grimsby. A nice wet snow created a pleasant setting for what would be a normally dull NS lashup of 9800 and 6611 heading Stateside with NS autoparts train #328 which used to run between Talbotville and Buffalo, and due to the chances of interesting power was a favourite with the fans.
The train is now discontinued, and the magnificient row of trees shown was flattened by a ferocious windstorm a couple of years ago.
The train is pictured coming onto the single track stretch between Grimsby and Jordan.

The power off the Eastbound "Canadian"#2 gets a cleaning and a scrubbing during layover in downtown Calgary on September 28, 1978. There is just over a month of independence left, at the end of October this CP train would be incorportated into the newly formed VIA system. Power is 1404 and 1416.

CN Plow Extra running in an eastward direction thru London back in March of 1978; Plow is #55614, power is CN 9179, 4530 and caboose 79874. Winter is beginning to fade, the snow looks old with a new dusting to give the scene some freshness. I am not exactly sure where this image was shot, I can only remember somewhere east of downtown; as the skyline has changed dramatically since. The F7Au was one of a series all retired by 1989. Assume it went for scrap.

I'm not usually much for roster shots (or submitting them) but the fact that someone left VIA 6793 behind at the Niagara Falls VIA station was a bit too much to resist.
Just in time before the shadow lengthened, this image was captured with Kodak Vericolor III 400 IS0 sheet film at 250/f11 with the trusty old 4x5 Speed Graphic.

CN's RSC-18 #1750 switches industry along the waterfront area of Summerside, PEI on a pleasantly warm September 16, 1977.
Railroading ended on the Island in late 1989.

Southbound CP train headed for Kinnear Yd passes Desjardins (the CN Oakville connction)as well as the construction for anticipated GO Transit traffic of the future. CP 1832, HLCX 663, CP 4215 and 4207; train number not recorded.
The lead unit was off the roster by 1998, the leased unit returned and the two C-424s retired in 1996.
This view at the High level Bridge off York Blvd is somewhat marred now by lightposts and other fixtures, as a public footpath was constructed under the bridge a few years back.
