About awmooney

Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

A followup to the NS #328 detour (as per: attachment_id=7959) is this image of the CP 5521, GATX 7371 and NS 6215 crossing over Bridge 10, Welland Canal. I was shocked this bridge was dismantled not long after. Perhaps it needed maintenance too costly to justify its' existence? As I keep saying.....more history.........

Like a scene from long-ago branchline railroading, Conrail crew watches and waves from the Van as the CR transfer heads back Stateside on a late afternoon in June of 1979. Note the US-bound merchandise is in crates. The vans are history, as is the old Bridgeburg B-1 Station. The building was jacked up and moved across the tracks to be trucked to the RR theme park on Central Av to keep CN 6218 and Ridgeway Sta company. Why it was then painted a sickly yellow I don't know. Bridgeburg was the original community name. Fort Erie was further to the south. Now, of course, they are one.

Not that often I was fortunate enough to catch an old MLW FPA-4 leading the Toronto-Bound Canadian. Seen here on a warm summer afternoon high over the Sequin River at Parry Sound harbour is VIA 6765, 6621 and 6618. Would I rather be boating? Nah.

The IC3 Flexliner. Another one of those VIA experiments, now almost forgotten. This was suppost to be a 6 month experiment in Southern Ontario with 2 Flexliner sets, designed and built by ADtranz, a new company spin off from ABB and Daimler-Benz. Over 200 sets of these Danish-built trains were operating in Europe in 1996. The Flex went into service Sept 29/96. Incidents in which the trainsets were not reliably activating track circuits resulted in them being pulled the very next day. After 7 weeks they were seen fit to return after tests and modifications. The trial service ended for one set in late March and the other early May of 1997. VIA felt this modern equipment would not "fit their needs".

An old London & Port Stanley electric motor #L2 sat for many years on a lonely spur down near the Toronto waterfront. I cannot remember exactly where, as the spur I believe has been removed for quite some time. The motor was purchased by a private individual and moved in 1993 to Brampton. It was subsequently relocated to the Halton County Radial Museum at Rockwood, ON in 1997 and remains there as part of their collection. In the view looking North toward the CN Tower one might ask "Where is the City"?? Well, it IS back there........somewhere.

It was indeed a surprise when, waiting for NS #328 autoparts train at Merritton, to witness them stop and the switch thrown at mile 9.49 and the train lined for the Thorold sub. What the???? Emergency work of some description was to be performed on the CN Canal bridge 6 and that #328 was to detour down the Thorold Sub and across brige 10 to CN Allanburg and onto the Stamford at Port Robinson. With two ships in the Twin Flight Locks, it made for a unique opportunity to catch trains and boats in the same photo. Power was nice as well, CP 5521, GATX 7371 and NS 6215. I was to witness moves like this a couple more times in the next few weeks. The Thorold bridge 10 was dismantled in 1997 and thus the east side of the line is now CN Thorold Spur and the west side (pictured) is the PCHR (Trillium) Canal Line.

Late afternoon on a bitterly cold day in January 1981 as VIA #75, with leader 6536 still in CN colours with the "CN" painted out leads sister 6530 westbound onto the Dundas Sub thru Bayview Junction. And one can see the photographer will live on in his own shadow. :o)

Essex Terminal Railway C-420 #106 (which began life as L&HR #22) is imaged while stopped waiting for track to be lined up at entrance to Ojibway yard. This locomotive would put in a little over 4 more years before being sold to the Arkansas& Missouri (as their #50), after toiling 16 years on the ETL.

At a location which I refer to in my old notes as Bayview East, (now 'Snake') the power for CN #392 smokes it up en route to its transfer down to Burlington West where it parked in behind the station in the former industrial yard awaiting further assignment. The photo is shot from Plains Rd West bridge at a location close to where old Hwy 6 and Hwy 2 used to come togther under the junction name of Wolfe Island, which can be seen engraved in the new replacement concrete structure at the entrance to the railfans' Walk Bridge. Poweer swirling under clouds of white exhaust are: CN 9172, 9195, 9175, 2513, 5190 and 9518. My assumption is the last four units ran light into Hamilton to pick up the A-B-A and the consist of #392 is tucked away at Aldershot yard. Or was this a Fort Erie to Toronto train? Anyone??

VIA Rail is still in its infancy and it is rather obvious as CN Tempo units 3151 and 3154 are powering an eleven car westbound approaching Dundas Station. For those familiar with this area, note the "guardrail" up at the Peak Lookout. And note the CCSL conveyer is still intact, seen at the extreme right of the photo.

It has already been a week since the infamous Mississauga Wreck, a disaster of epic proportions as far as the CP was concerned; and this view shows a westbound CP 5530, 4727 and C&O 3561 detouring over the CN Dundas sub approximately mile 4.2. Not the safest place to be shooting from, but, being caught walking along the outside of the RoW there wasn't much of an alternative. Certainly something one would never try today. In the distant background Sydenham Rd bridge can be seen, as well as the old Canada Crushed Stone screen-house and the remains of the overhead conveyer.

When the CP was awash in leasers in the mid-90s, it was a great time to be trackside. This is a typical lashup; westbound over the Thames River as seen from the highway 59 bridge, a rather popular railfan location during mid afternoons. Power on this train is CP 5612, 5643, GATX 901 and HLCX 6203.

It was June 2003 when CP's grand old steam engine 2816, touring Canada, made the rounds in Ontario, having run southbound over the big Parry Sound bridge on June 5th and returning north over same on June 22nd. It was a month when all the train nuts were foaming in overdrive. This one was rather bad as well. :o) The handful of fans who ventured out around the High Level Bridge at the west end of Hamilton became increasingly disappointed as the prevailent sunshine disappeared and a cloud provoked drizzle took over while the train was delayed somewhere up the line around Waterdown due to fallen trees, of all things. Speculation of vandals in action was the general feeling, but I never did find out what happened. Anyway, it all worked out in the end and the train put on a grand show as it rolled by; this photo now a treasure in the sense that latest rumour has it CP has the old 2816 up for sale. We may never see it run in Canada again. A huge loss.

The overnight fog saved the bacon for this image of the North-bound Algoma Central Tour Train on this first of October fall morning. The train otherwise would appear almost directly out of the morning sun, making this run to Searchmont photographically a bit of a downer. Instead, a rather nice shot of AC 1750, 1756, 1754, 1755 & 1751 with a long train rolling by the old boarded up station. AC units were formerly CN 6502, 6553(CP4103/1404) 6525, 6531 and 6506. I believe these units since have all found homes Stateside, having seen a few of them recently on the Keokuk Jct.Rwy, out of La Harpe, Ill. I am, however, interested in the status of the old Searchmont depot.

In reply to that smooth Ballast Train contribution from James Adeney (attachment_id=7780) from the other day regarding his comments on the "ugly" ballast put down on the Galt sub over the summer of 1979, here is another example shot in Milton 2 days previous. The train is working its' way westward, and this is a brief moment in time where tremendous clouds of grey sooty dust was not billowing thru the air. Instead, it was stack exhaust. And true to James' words, the power was always interesting, always changing. Here we see RS-10 #8559 and GP35 5019 along with that straggler, RS-3 8446.

It Has to Happen, Dept: Train #399 with CN 5530 leader almost cresting the grade at Copetown, it was rather startling to see the trailing two units. Both the same number!!! IC 6068 and GCFX 6068 made for one rare combination and a very unusual photo.

History in the making as the First Seamless International Grain Train makes its way across the steel arch bridge connecting Niagara Falls Ontario with its American counterpart. The D&H 7309 was ushered over to CP Montrose Yard for the brief ceremony as the SOO had brought the train to Canada and the CP unit added on to represent the run thru Ontario. As the D&H led the train to New York State and on to Albany, standing in this pitiful morning drizzle for a couple of hours was a real downer. Also the fact that N.F. city police had to investigate my illegal location on Robert Moses Parkway, they had to call the State Police who in turned called Border Patrol and it was another couple of hours explaining I was NOT involved in any criminal activity but instead wanting to capture this "train event" on film. I must admit the police were shaking their heads going thru my notebook. "All these pictures"??? One of them asked.......... As usual, in the end it was all worth it; even the fact I was over an hour late for work. Power is D&H 7309, CP 5529, SOO 6612, 6601 and 780. The large building in upper center of photo is the old Kind Eddy Hotel, also now a part of history.

From high on the rocks, here is an overview of the great Sinter Plant that used to provide so much employment to the town of Wawa, Ontario as well as the former Algoma Central Railroad. The purpose of the plant was to supply blast furnaces with sinter, a combination of blended ores, fluxes and coke which is partially "cooked" or sintered. In this form the materials combine efficiently in the blast furnace and allow for more consistent and controllable iron manufacture. From here, material was transported out to Michipicoten Harbour, about 12 miles west, for GreatLakes shipping. Awaiting next assignment are WC 6604, 6655, 3012 and 6506. The F45, 6655, was retired in 2002. Later on this year 1998 the plant was closed, buildings removed, track removed, and nothing is left but a blight on the landscape. The plant had been in continuous operation since 1939, and is now but a memory.

[editors note: accepted due to rarity and content despite image quality] Seeing that ridership was continually growing, it became time for GO Transit to look into double-decker coaches for their busier lines. Chicago NorthWestern, which runs a commuter service in Chicago, was able to loan GO a number of coaches in order they be tried out to rate their performance. It was early in the year when they were on trial here, which, because GO runs early morning and late afternoon, made it very difficult to get enough light in order to catch these in action. This is a late day view at Burl. West, GO 9806 the power westward, with a considerable number of CNW bilevels in tow. The date on my slide is illegible, but according to Trackside Guide, this GP40TC was new in 1966 as #606, became renumbered 9806 in 1970 and then reverted to 506 in 1975, so this must be April of 1975 if the book is correct. Incidentally, most fans know the former station here as "Burlington West", but it was previously the station known as "Freeman" which was the name of the community here before it was swallowed up by Burlington expansion in the 1960s.

The CN version of the Nanticoke Steel Train, in this image on the move from Hamilton to the affiliated steel mill in Nanticoke by way of Brantford and south was very short lived running with this A-B-A lashup. There always seemed to be some mechanical problem and it wasn't long before GP9s were in the mix and after that, the GP40 Widecabs took over, making this, in the hearts of the fans, just another train heading west............
Seen here approaching Mile 1 Dundas sub are CN 9166, 9195 and 9177. The bridge in the background supports Old Guelph Rd. Winning "a fight with the cloud" was nice. :o)
