About sdfourty
Best hobby in the world ! A photographer friend recommended the Nikon brand, bought my first used Nikon in 1976 and continue to use that Nikon body regularly. Best ever train ride: Extra 6060 west, a seven car train, Ottawa to Toronto via the (now lifted) Smiths Falls subdivision (mostly at 25 mph) then onto the Kingston sub, west of Napanee the engineer let 6060 really run: at 80+ mph 6060 sounded like the Turbo ! Then a brief stop at Port Hope demonstrated that the 'grape vine' really worked (who needs "social media" ! ) : the whole town showed up! sdfourty.

Bridge series:
<br>
<br>
The expanse of the Ganaraska Viaduct is remarkable: 1,856 foot long ( 0.35 miles ).
<br>
<br>
The original single tracked GTR viaduct was built 1851 – 1856 with 54 piers.
<br>
<br>
The GTR named the bridge the Prince Albert Viaduct, with the first train officially crossing October 13, 1856.
<br>
<br>
GTR rebuilt and widened the PAV 1887 – 1983 with some 30 piers ( plus an arch) to allow double tracking.

Noteworthy: Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819 – 1861) was the consort of Queen Victoria (1819 – 1901), Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland 1837 – 1901). [ consort is the spouse of a ruling monarch ]
<br>
<br>
Fun Fact - The Notable & The Famous: GTR 1854 – 1859 built Victoria Bridge (Pont Victoria), a k a Victoria Jubilee Bridge, is 1.9 miles long with 24 ice breaking piers and rebuilt 1897–1898 with new spans for double track and later adding the 'new' St. Lawrence Seaway Lift Bridge, also adding the Victoria Bridge diversion double track with a second SLS Lift Bridge: currently the CN St.Hyacinthe Sub miles 70.3 to 72.4 ( Montreal – Saint Lambert (south shore) – Drummondville).

<br>
the VIA time table states “ Nos. #121-122 O.N. trains operated on CN lines between Toronto on North Bay”
<br>
<br>
[no specific operating comment in the timetable regarding the operation of trains 120 (Sat), 123 ( Fri., Sun), 124 (Sun); presumably these operated by VIA using ONR equipment]
<br>
<br>
The Location: near Bala Sub mile 7, passenger train speed limit through the sharp curves: 35 m.p.h.; at lower left is a former East York works land (garbage dump) fill site (accessed from Northline Drive), East York Parkview Hills bungalows at upper left, the Flemingdon Park golf course is just out of view at extreme at right, at extreme upper left is the single tall (1971 built) exhaust stack for the Richard L. Hearn Generating Station (operating 1951 to 1983) at 44 Unwin Avenue located on the Toronto Port Lands
