Me and a buddy made our way to Toronto yard on the morning of December 4th as we knew a work train was showing to dump CWR on the Mactier sub. Instead, we arrive to "the plow train" calling in the yard over the scanner. As they depart Toronto yard with Jordan Spreader CP 402894 and SD40-2 CP 5920, they tell RTC the plan: "up the Mactier sub, picking up a foreman in Midhurst, plowing maybe Medonte, definitely Buckskin & Bala; leave the plow in Bala and light power to Mactier. And the chase was on! Here they are ducking under the infamous 9th Line bridge near Beeton ON.

One of 14 zebra GP9RMs left on CN's roster (5 in the Toronto pool) leads a rare trio of GP9RMs westbound as they highball down the Dundas sub after running around their train at Paris Junction. This particular trio was CN 4131, CN 7025, and CN 4136; who collectively had 198 years of service at the time the photo was taken. To my knowledge, there has not been another GP9 trio in London in the year since, although some wacky sets including 3 GP9s have occurred a bit to the north in the Kitchener terminal.

CN in Markham, a reunion 10 years in the making. After the YDHR shut its doors for the final time, ONR wanted their GP9 back and the crew of CN L546 was tasked with retrieving it from Lincolnville. CN 9555 and CN 9450 run up the Metrolinx Uxbridge sub light power to grab it, marking the first CN units to pass the historical Markham train station in 10 years, as far as I can tell. In 2014, CN ran a few work trains on the Uxbridge but since, only GO and ONR 1603 have passed the station. It's the wee hours of May 26th, nearly 01h30, yet nearly 10 railfans are out chasing this rare movement.

OSR's plow extra train removes snow from the tracks of the Port Burwell subdivision on a mild January morning. At 97 years old, OSR plow 401005 spearheads the operation with help from OSR F units 1401 and 6508. The engines are nearly invisible thanks to the amount of snow kicked up by this unique train.

The Green Goblin frenzy has ended... CN 580 (and 581) might have been the most popular train all summer, with BNSF 2098 headlining the set and the likes of CN 9547, 4713, and 4791 acting as supporting characters. But of course, in early June when it first arrived, we didn't know it would last that long. On one of its first trips along the Hagersville sub, BNSF 2098 & CN 9547 cut through the rolling hills north of Onondaga ON with 11 loads from CGC.

CP H88 climbs out of the Thames River valley west of Woodstock with 3 GP38-2s and 6200ft of traffic on the drawbar. Due to a derailment the week prior, H88 hadn't been able to run for 5 days. Traffic piled up and the crew was tasked to bring 103 cars back to London.

The sprayer, part 1. The 2023 version of the CP spray train saw multimark SD40-2 6055 at the helm. Me and a friend positioned ourselves at one a few wooden bridges left on the Belleville sub, this one being just west of Port Hope, Ontario. Just as time was running out to catch them, 6055 rounds the bend at a blistering 10 miles per hour, spraying the ROW with herbicides to prevent weed growth throughout the year.

With under a month left of the London GO pilot project, I felt it was appropriate to make a post. The pilot project has been an utterly failure from the get-go, despite raising the speed limits east of Stratford to 60mph and doing tons of promotion for the train. As it turns out, not many want to spend 4 hours on the GO from Toronto to St. Mary's and/or London. That being said, when I visited Stratford it was suprisingly busy, indicating some level of demand there. I would hope Metrolinx looks at potentially bringing service to Stratford again in future. Here, GO 560 pulls 10 coaches down the Weston sub, in the final stages of the long journey from London.

VIA 75 winds through Paris ON, overtaking a tied down CN 301 in the process. VIA 903, a wrapped P42DC provides the power, pulling 6 LRC coaches. ES44DC 2284 is CN 301s leader, who would get a rescue crew about a few hours later.

Rare mileage... sort of. Earlier in the day, CP H88 eastbound left a cut of manifest on the OSR connecting track at Woodstock anticipating a pickup by the shortline later in the day. By the time they returned westbound, OSR had not showed and a foreman needed the track clear to move MOW equipment out of Woodstock. CP H88 hooked back onto the cut they left behind and shoved it into the OSR yard so that a track was clear for the foreman. It's pretty uncommon to see CP on those tracks so it was worth a few shots despite the smoky skies blocking out the sun.

The glory days of the lowly CN GECO spur may be gone (after the GM van assembly plant closed in the 90s) but CN 546 still traverses it twice a week. On this night, CN L546 was stopped at IPEX while the conductor threw a switch in the middle of their duties there. CN 4125 and CN 4776 spot 1 car and pull another out. CN 4125 is the oldest active locomotive on CN (built 2/1955) and I am extremely thankful for every opportunity I have to shoot this unit.

VIA 6410 pulls a 4-pack of LRCs through the countryside just west of Port Hope ON. Spring was in the air for this shot, with the buds just starting to grow on the roadside bushes.

OSR 1591 is assigned to the St. Thomas job solo as they round the bend at Putnam. OSR 1591 is slowing down to work the industries there before continuing west to St. Thomas.

CN M394 ducks under the Snider West signal bridge with 2 ET44ACs and 18 C40-8/M/Ws destined for Toronto. Units included are CN 3206, CN 3269, IC 2462, CN 2019, BCOL 4623, CN 2424, CN 2008, CN 2003, CN 2038, CN 2005, CN 2037, BCOL 4619, CN 2402, CN 2036, CN 2432, BCOL 4620, CN 2431, CN 2434, CN 2444, CN 2180. There are dozens of railfan rumors on what is happening to all of these dash 8s, and I will keep out of the debate, but I will say I am grateful to watch 9 of my favourite units (the C40-8M) again.

CN L581 makes an extremely rare move northbound up the Halton to work 2 industries on the 'Glass lead' in Milton, before rocketing back to Aldershot and eventually Brantford. CN 9547 and BNSF 2098 provide the power for this train. CN 581 might be the most random train in Southern Ontario, with it regularly running light power eastbound from Brantford and going down the Grimsby, or to Aldershot, or even Oakville. But this was the first time I've ever heard of 581 going up the Halton to Milton (doing 551s tasks). With the noodleless zebra and the Cascade Green geeps, as well as the overgrown state of the tracks, this could easily be an obscure shortline. CN in 2023 folks.

VIA 63 flies by the famous Lovekin wooden bridge with a 5-pack of LRC coaches bound for Toronto. Leading is P42DC 920, the final one in VIAs order.

BNSF 2316 and CN 4910 pull 3 cars southbound down the Metrolinx Newmarket sub after working a few industries along the line. BNSF 2316 was in Toronto to repay horsepower hours, and it was the first one around. It has since gone back to the USA (maybe to BNSF, I'm not sure) but there are still some others wandering about in various CN yards across the country.

CP 239 blasts through Puslinch after clearing Guelph Jct with SD70ACu CP 7001 leading CP 8035 and around 40 cars for London. CP 239 (Ex 255) is by far the fastest road train I consistently see, with them nearly always going trackspeed due to their short & light train.

CN SD60s are pretty uncommon in the Greator Toronto Area, and have been for multiple years. CN averages about two every year on the Halton, when they escape local service in the USA. This 148 was power swapped in Flint Michigan, with a SD60/Tevo combo getting put on the hotshot stacker. As a result, a bunch of railfans made their way to the tracks for it. CN 5456 and CN 3060 approach SNS Stewarttown with lights all the way to Brampton.
