About Todd Steinman

I have always loved railfanning. From the age of three - my parents swore I knew where every railway line, railway crossing, or any station was. I was born in Palmerston, Ontario - right beside the old station and rail yard. I grew up when stations were painted in dark colors, or completely insulbricked. Unfortunately, I didnt start taking an interest in photography until my early 20s. Now, I'm happy to share my collection of both trains, stations and the stories that go with each photo. My equipment was an old Fujifilm 35mm automatic camera, upgraded to my first Canon digital camera in 2004, and now use two old Canon EOS Rebel csmers bodies shooting with either my 18-55mm or 75-300mm lenses.

Hard to believe I took this now two years ago. Had some free time as my wife took the kids on a trip to Florida with my in laws. I wasn't able to go having taken most of my vacation time earlier that winter when my son was born. But, it did give me some time to get out and photograph, experimenting with an early sunset as the Winter Solstice approached.

Having checked my usual spots, where the old searchlight signals were close to almost every level crossing between Chatham and Tilbury, it wasn't until I crossed Drake Road that I saw the faint glow of 8752's headlight. After waiting for at least 15 minutes hoping to replicate this photo of <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=31166"> CP 651 from 2017, </a> I unfortunately lost the last little bit of the suns rays. However, finding this train stopped on the mainline, made this worthwhile.

I don't normally take night photos. But, I shot parallel to CPKC Windsor Sub., from Coutts Line, just east of Tilbury, ON. Look closely beside the engine, and you'll see mile marker sign '74'. Train held for clearance, either for a meet at Ringold, Kent Bridge or North Glencoe. Cold evening sky, showing the silhouette of the telegraph line...searchlight signal is red in the distance, now just getting underway with the warm glow of all lights having been turned on as the train approaches the Merlin Road crossing, sounding it's approach.

<b> Part One - ARRIVAL OF 514 </b>

On a cold and bitter January day, the sun was peaking out, but in very short spurts.
Both 7068 and 4705 went right to work. With a larger than normal cut of cars, both engines were working hard, switching out the large ADM facility. To the right, the trucks sit for the Apollo Group (property management and other services, I assume for moving?). Kind of ironic, that increased truck usage would ultimately reduce rail traffic. Nonetheless, these trailers are idle this day.

To the left (and out of frame), are two items now since removed. See that wooden walkway that crosses both tracks? This is where the old C&O Blenheim station once stood (you can see Bill Thomson's photo by <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=30976"> clicking here. </a> Also, the former Thompsons facility (now the Anderson's). They had an <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=59246"> old tonner, </a> that until recently sat on one of the sidings within the property.

I had been here <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=60206"> three years prior, </a> but ended a busy day with my last shots st Richmond Street crossing, one block west of Metcalfe Steet crossing (seen in distance). It was a full trip, having shot trains at earlier in the day at <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=59779"> Kerwood, </a> and also at <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=60293"> Watford. </a>

Here, lone engine 2983 leads 271 westward to Sarnia.

Upon being contacted yesterday by fellow contributor <a href="https://railpictures.ca/author/awmooney"> A.W. Mooney </a> notifying me that <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=60318"> VIA 908, </a> 912, 916 and 919 are currently being scrapped", I thought it only fitting to show my first photo of the new Siemens trainset.

Guess the setting sun, reflecting off of the train foreshadowed what was inevitable. Hopefully the same mistake won't get made again, as it was long ago (with not saving either a Turbo or a Bombardier LRC engines), that one P42 would be donated to Exporail museum.

Since I posted a nice wintry photo of a <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=60206"> CN train through Strathroy, </a> here's another. This time for the 'then' CP at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre.

To the left of the engines nose, is the old CAW Hall. Still unused, and up for sale. Now you can't even see it, as new housing and apartments block this view. High above the train, to the right is the silo for Dover Corn Products, who once used the CP for transport (their spur is still intact, and includes an abandoned tank car within their property).

On a fine, nearly Spring morning...another SD70ACu rebuilt engine in CP 7006, leading with a second unidentified unit around the bend approaching Arkwood Road crossing.

The train stands out against the brownish landscape, as the sun highlights the still fairly fresh looking paint on 7006.

Still wearing the 40th Anniversary wrap, VIA 908 sits as train 78 makes its station stop. Always nice to see another railfan. Although, I'll miss seeing and hearing the sound of those stainless steel cars.

NOTE: off in the distance (to the right of the last car) was a classic CN boxcar. It sat on one of the many sidings, that were in place to serve many industries of 'yester-year'. CN had used it for storage, complete with a small deck with stairs. I had always planned to incorporate it into one of my photos, but sadly it was dismantled a few years ago. The area where all spare supplies (crossing lights, old gates etc.) was also fenced off then too.

The old station grounds along the Canadian Pacific, now 'CPKC' Windsor Subdivision, sure have changed. Gone are the grain towers, that stood to the right (and high above) previous trains. But, the changes occured moreso recently as CPKC has upgraded their infrastructure.

After seeing a green signal showing clear east to Chatham, I drove further west, past Haycroft, all the way to Rochester Townline Rd. Still seeing no train coming from Windsor, I looped back to Haycroft by way of Stoney Point. After crossing the Windsor Sub, there was the trains headlights.

<br>
No sooner had I got back to Tilbury, the barriers at Queen Street sounded their alarm and the gates started coming down. This photo was the best I could take, as this train was going faster than I imagined. It seemed only fitting, to include the communications tower for CPKC, a new landmark for a historic line.

CN 4116 is seen switching in the yard, long nose forward. And, conductor standing perfectly poised on the platform. To the right, one can just see into view the <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=21015"> plaid shirt sleeve of the engineer. </a> I was told he always looked like that, but still gave me a wave when they finished their shift.

Nice summer day, for another trip out during the pandemic. Searching along the Strathroy Sub., I had first missed this train at Strathroy, got ahead of it at <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=59779"> Kerwood (due to a meet) </a>, then picked Watford due to the openness of the old <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=38272"> station grounds. </a>

What interested me, was not only 4 engines including what I assume at the time was a blue CEFX leaser, but CN 2036. A C40-8, it really stood out against this mix of power and reminded me of older power that once traversed CN's network.

Glad I snapped this photo when I did. After researching more information about 2036, it was retired in 2023. I can only imagine it was scrapped.

Only once before I had shot from this location, narrowly missing the train shown in the photo (by the provided link above). This version of Canada Day, during the pandemic, proved to have less time for setup.

Having driven around, checking the Windsor Sub. west of Chatham, past Tilbury to Haycroft, I had pretty much given up hope of photographing a train. Until I saw this, with most of the train having passed me by die to roadside brush that prevented me from seeing the line. Nonetheless, a quick halt, turned around and headed back east giving all that my old V6 (2013) Impala could give.

Here are three sisters, all part of the SD70ACu rebuild program in 7040, 7041, and 7045 on their way to Windsor. So shiny, and newly painted...at least they looked good at a distance!

I paid the price for this photo. Trying new locations, I was at the entrance to C.M. Wilson Conservation Area. Here, Fargo Road brings you right to the crossing entering the campground. However, I misjudged my position, unaware of the mosquito population amongst the long grass.

Nonetheless, CN 7025 jaunts along at a steady 10 to 15 MPH, after lifting two cars from Blenheim on their way back to Chatham.

<b>A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME?</b> CP sure had some grungy units leading their trains. I likely would've passed but there was a 'grey ghost' included in KCS 4531. Nice, after work catch even though it's as grungy as CP 8649. All of this, before the merger of these two roads.

Perfect 'permacrud' type of day. I decided to check out the former C&O / CSX station grounds. So much change, since I was here 20 years before. Standing on the southern portion of the wye, last used back when these two roads exchanged traffic, this auto rack train snuck up on me. Led by a wonderfully coloured BNSF leader, I believe this was train 235.

NOTE: Both north and south signals, although unused, still stand protecting where the diamond once was between the CP and CSX. Of course, mounds of dirt were piled on either side of this once busy C&O Sub. No. 2. The little Chatham depot once stood to the left, but out of frame. The red brick platform was still in place then, as was most sidings in the CP yard.

<b>SO THE STORY GOES (PART ONE)....</b>

<i>"When I was a kid, I had a friend named Phil. His Dad bought two old train stations and moved them outside of Dundas, and joined them together to make their house. I don't remember exactly where, but the house was high up on a hill. We used to look down below, and watch the steam trains go by. I'm sure its all overgrown now..." </i>

Intriguing for any station guy, right? But these little tidbits of information was the real search engine before technology became what we know of it today. And networking with people then, was how this story, was provided by my chiropractor telling me of how the Lomax family built their home.
<br>
<br>
The search began, by driving every sideroad west of Dundas. It made sense, as everything east was becoming heavily built up with urban sprawl. And finally, just through the trees, before going down and under what would be CN's Dundas Subdivision - was the home of the Lomax family.
<br>
<br>
Here, pictured on a wintry Spring day is part of the house - the old TH&B Stoney Creek station. The station, used to sit at the base of what is today the 'Old Mountain Road' (now a trail). As automobile use increased, the need for passenger service to smaller towns decreased since the railways 'consolidated' their services to stay competitive. Nonetheless, the station was closed around 1960.

NOTE: I've always respected people's property. When arriving, I went to the front door to ask permission. However, no one was initially home. As I was about to leave, a pickup truck arrived. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Lomax (Phil's mother). She had no worries about giving me permission to take or share photos, when I explained to her about the story provided by my chiropractor. As a bonus, I got to see the inside of the home. Both parts. But, I have to thank my chiropractor...without that information I would never have gone on this search.

A wonderful spring evening is always a great backdrop for trains. Here, as the sun descends ending another day, CP 9765 and NS 8121 lead this eastbound through Chatham under <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=31166"> another golden sunset. </a>

<b>ALL DONE - in more ways than one.</b>

First, it's the end of the shift, for the crew. After running to Thamesville and Blenheim, both GMD1 1412 (pictured), along with 1444 (hidden) are shoving their small cut of cars to park at the end of Merritt Ave. They will be picked up by CN 438 in the evening.
<br>
<br>
Second, it would be the following year that these old units would be retired. I would be lucky enough to see 1412 one more time, that summer <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=42144"> again as power for 514. </a>
Thankfully, one unit (ex-CN 1437) was donated to the Waterloo Central Railway. With a fresh coat of paint in traditional green and gold paint scheme from the 50s, it's <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=48154"> renumbered as 1012 (Stephen C. Host photo). </a>

The namesake town, of the namesake subdivision. On a cold wintry day, nearing the end of 2017...I look back and wonder why CN didn't lead with the BC Rail (BCOL?) 4643. Oh well. Still a good catch, as the train heads west to Sarnia, passing Strathroy's water tower along with the former silos that once received cars.

After seeing the Anniversary train along Sarnia's waterfront, I was out and about. To end the day, I shot this train when it came to a stop, <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34577"> at Camlachie Road for clearance into Sarnia. </a> Thankfully, the rain had stopped and the sun hadn't fully come out again as the train is now entering Sarnia at Blackwell Road.

As it splits the signals, of note are the two signs on either side showing what appear to be radio frequencies to communicate through.

This is what its all about.

Normally, I wouldn't post an everyday VIA train. Now looking back, the P42 'mud missiles' and F40s are slowly being replaced by the new Siemens sets on the Windsor to Quebec City corridor. BUT...this hot summer morning had lots of action as train 72 is about to depart, continuing east.
<br>
<br>
As the engineer slowly releases the brakes, the train is gaining speed as the conductor is entering through the cab door, after turning the key to instigate the protected Queen Steeet crossing. Before the conductor climbed back in, the trainee had already returned after learning the routine at what is normally a 10 minute station stop. To the right of the train's nose, is the 'Welcome to Chatham-Kent" sign for those who've never visited before (since removed). To the left, are what memories are made of...two youngsters excitedly watching the train, while having experienced the action of the trains station stop.

<br>
And way down the line, in behind the scenes, is a plume of exhaust from the ageless CN GP9rm 7060, making a few last minute moves as it builds its train for the days run of the local L514, to Blenheim and Thamesville, returning later in the afternoon to Chatham.
<br>
<br>
Yup, this is what it's all about.
