About First954


I was born and raised in Capreol, Ontario. I worked for CN in the Area Engineering Office during the summers of 1965 and 1966. During the summers of 1967-1969, I worked as a brakeman out of Capreol. In the fall of 1969, I transferred to the Great Lakes Regional offices in Toronto. I left CN in 1975 to join the transportation department of Ontario Hydro. I moved to the USA in 1989. I am still an active photographer.

CN train 97, a Friday only and summer only, Toronto to North Bay train is powered by FPA-2u 6758. CN 6758 was delivered by MLW in 1955 as FPA-2 6711 and later renumbered to 6755. It was subsequently rebuilt by CN to 1800 hp and renumbered again to 6758. Train 97 was always interesting as you never knew what was going to show up on it.

Smoke hangs heavy from early season forest fires in Thunder Bay, Ontario on June 26, 1980, as the first section of an eastbound train arrives behind a pair of SD40-2s and a pair of SD40s. 5655 leads the 5771, 5546, and 5540. Location show is a guestimate as my memory does not go back that far!!

A railroad's ability to reuse and adapt older, no longer needed, equipment for new uses and purposes can be amazing. Take CN 72026 for example: built by CC&F in 1959 as a double deck auto transporter in the 720000 series. After the introduction of 89 foot bi and tri level auto racks, the car was converted to passenger train service (note the passenger trucks) in 1972 as part of CN's car-go-rail program and renumbered to 9503. It was eventually converted again to work train service in 1993 as the 72026. The paint scheme on this car is rather unique as the "CN" is in the passenger red/orange paint versus the traditional white paint on other freight and work service cars.

CN's lowest numbered SW1200RS, 1204, sits just outside the inbound inspection covered area at Toronto Yard. If you look closely the engine appears to have taken a little abuse as the rear handrails are awfully close together and the steps are pushed up under the cab. Just another day in railroading and maybe a form 3903 to be completed.

Locomotive Engineers were treated to their own accommodation when assigned to work trains. On the other hand, the conductor and both brakemen had to sleep, cook, eat, and work in the caboose.

Only a few months old, but already showing signs of heavy use, a pair of SD40s, 5039 and 5042, sit at the west end of track 2R in Capreol prior to heading west on the Ruel Subdivision with train 301.

Penn Central GP9B 3800 rests at CP's Agincourt Yard on September 17th, 1977. The unit was built by EMD in November 1957 as Pennsylvania Railroad 7175B.

A pair of CN SW1200RS units from class GR-12f built in 1956 rush back to Toronto Yard with a van hop movement. The units are 1228 and 1237. The units may be from the same order, but there are many differences. 1228: small number board numbers; grey spark arresters; low CN symbol; low cab number. 1237: large number board numbers; silver spark arresters; high CN symbol; high cab number. Hard to believe this photo was taken 45 years ago.

A pair of oldies lead a CN freight south out of Capreol, Ontario on July 13th, 2015. 2028 was built for the C&NW in March 1989 as their 8529. It later became UP 9051. The trailing unit is 2423 which was built for CN in March 1990. It is interesting to note the train order board located within the museum's grounds. CN made the museum remove the blades as it might confuse train crews. Train number 314 is a guess.

Still dripping wet from the car washer, VIA Turbo #151 meanders over to Union Station Toronto on September 9th, 1979. A little bruised, dented, and held together with masking tape, the equipment will become the afternoon Turbo to Montreal.

CN train 673, the "Budd cars" from Toronto, have arrived at North Bay and are waiting to head Transfer Yard to be turned. This day, the train was conventional with freight GP9 4523 doing the honors. Former Crusader coach 302 brings up the tail end of the train.

CN C630 number 2023 leads an extra along the York Sub toward Toronto Yard. Power for the train is 2023 2016 3836 and 9510. Those were the days with no graffiti.

CN winterized GP9, 4514, takes a break in front of the Huntsville station on May 21, 1980. The yard looks to be full of cars on this day.

CN's first H-16-44, 2200, was having a temper tantrum on a cold December 1966 morning and did not want to start. The mechanic was making adjustments as the Road Foreman provided encouragement. CN had a total of 18 of these FM designed units which were built by Canadian Locomotive Company in Kingston, Ontario in 1955.

The Canadian Pacific yard crew is busy getting ready for the arrival of the Eastbound Canadian. Cars have to be pulled from the storage tracks on the east end of the station, sorted, and staged. The new CPRail paint is almost complete, but a few cars still exist in the older version. A lot has changed since this photo was taken, for example, the west half of the station is gone, as are the brick chimney, water tank, and storage tracks. And the view now blocked by the Paris Street bridge.

A matched pair of CN passenger units, FPA4 6770 and FPB4 6869, rest on one of the shop tracks at Capreol, Ontario on June 17, 1969 after bringing the Toronto section of the Panorama into town. The units will be turned and head back to Toronto that night on the Panorama.
