About First954


I was born and raised in Capreol, Ontario. I worked for CN in the Area Engineering Office during the summers of 1965 and 1966. During the summers of 1967-1969, I worked as a brakeman out of Capreol. In the fall of 1969, I transferred to the Great Lakes Regional offices in Toronto. I left CN in 1975 to join the transportation department of Ontario Hydro. I moved to the USA in 1989. I am still an active photographer.

A trio of "Good Old Girls" SD40-2s, 5792, 5953, and 5925 lead a westbound freight over brand new rail into Sudbury, Ontario on May 21, 2011 where they will do a small set off and lift.

A CP eastbound freight eases through Sudbury, Ontario behind the 9754 and 9106. The 9106 was subsequently rebuilt to the 7053.

Viewed from the head end of # 3, the tail end of southbound # 4 has some interesting cars. There appears to be a deadhead coach behind the sleepers, then comes the car-go-rail auto transporter, and finally a business car wearing the markers. Number 3 is in the siding at the north switch of Woodward siding. Location shown is approximate.

CP 2101 goes about its switching duties in Sudbury, Ontario on August 2, 2011. The "Ultra-Low Emissions" unit was belching out more exhaust than the GP9 to which it was coupled. These units could not have worked out as they were not on the property very long.

VIA 6205 has been converted to a full baggage car for use on trains 185 and 186 between Sudbury and White River. All passenger seats were removed and 2 x 6 boards installed to protect the windows.

VIA train 185 is almost ready depart Sudbury on August 2, 2011, with a brightly painted 6202 bringing up the rear. The other car is the all baggage conversion of the 6205.

A trio of big MLW units lead an eastbound freight on the York Sub just east of Bathurst Street on February 15, 1981. Units are 2335, 2004, and 2011.

Definitely not the prettiest beast in the fleet, but the saying "if it loads, it goes" applies here!! CN 2019, ex UP 9043, nee C&NW 8523 in July 1989, is turned on the wye with several other units in Capreol, Ontario on June 26, 2014.

VIA train # 1 slows for its station stop at Sudbury (Junction), Ontario on July 5th, 2023. The train had sat for about two and a half hours behind a stopped northbound CN intermodal freight that held the mainline at the south switch at Sudbury (Junction). I never did find out why the freight had stopped. Power for the Canadian was the 6421 and 6458.

FRUSTRATION!!!! Frustration is the word of the day as this photo was taken on July 5th, 2023. VIA # 1 has stopped at Sudbury Junction 3 hours and 1 minute late. It was about 40 minutes late only 5 miles south of Sudbury Junction but was stopped behind by a disabled northbound CN intermodal freight for two and a half hours. Amazingly about a half dozen passengers got off the train and more than a dozen boarded.

With an on-time departure from Sudbury, VIA train 185 heads into the wilderness west of Sudbury, Ontario on July 4th, 2023. The train has 6217 leading, 6219 in the middle, and 6250 bringing up the rear.

CP Sudbury was a very busy place when the eastbound Canadian arrived. The "B" unit 1904 has been set off and the 1417 is taking on water. The power for the Toronto section is making their way past the station. The yard engine is busy switching cars. A lot of action!!!

CN train 474 races south over the south switch at Suez, Ontario on the day after Christmas 1969. The first dozen or so cars will be set off at Sudbury. Power for the train is 4578, western lines 4248, and 4016.
