While it provided a nice background, the weather was causing challenging shooting conditions during the shove for VIA #1 onto York 1 at Snider. Once clear of the signal, the train will proceed eastward towards Doncaster, where it will proceed northward. Ahead of the (mostly hidden) baggage car were 5 deadheading cars; a coach, two Manors and two Skylines.

Sometimes the planets really do align. 254 went down the hill into the CTC, 247 got an "after" clearance, then 435 was done with its work at Aldershot and was told to "blast off." With as much train and as little power, the crew remarked that there would be no blasting. 2446 and 2124 were labouring to get the train going, the 4705 was just along for the ride. Amidst the leaf free winter forest, we saw headlights. Then we saw headlights again. "Wait," we said, "are those two sets of headlights? There's no way this is happening." And then it happened. CP 8743 and 8034, labouring themselves to get CP 247 moving after having waited for 254 to clear Desjardins, passed over 435 which was absolutely struggling to keep moving. Neither train would have been doing more than 15 miles an hour, and this was definitely to our benefit. An excellent turn of events to cap off 2020. All the best for 2021!

So many signs, logos and symbols, all seen in such a small space. Some safety related, some patriotic, some brand related, and some more relevant in the current age than ever before. DANGER 600 VOLTS, CN, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, JUST SAY NO TO CRO, CAUTION NO FOOTBOARD, 5849, WARNING REMOTE CONTROL LOCOMOTIVE, automatic door, STOP.

Because of slow moving vehicles, I wasn't able to get where I wanted to be to catch this train. I figured I would take a guess and see what I could get, given I'd miss the train if I tried going where I wanted to. As it turns out, luck was on my side. UP 7393 certainly didn't stay home this holiday season.

Tied down on number 1 track of the Kingston Sub between Marysville and Quinte, CN 105 sat for the majority of the day awaiting the continuation of its trip. At this particular point, it was being overtaken by CN 149 on number 2 track. VIA 42 would be along shortly on number 3 track. A busy few minutes along the Kingston Sub for a Saturday afternoon. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of CN's IPO on November 17, 1995, the trailing 5 engines were painted into schemes representing the additions made to the CN family since privatization. Each with a CN IPO25 logo on the side of the cab, the engines are 3115 for BC Rail, 8952 for Grand Trunk Western, 3023 for the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, 3069 for Wisconsin Central, 8898 in fresh CN paint, and 3008 for Illinois Central. These will certainly make CN trains interesting for the coming times.

Of all the engines that could be around and bouncing back and forth day after day, CP 7016 and 6644 are a great pair. Seen here with a friendly wave from the conductor, the units are working hard to keep about 7000 feet of train moving through Streetsville.

As seen from the Dixie Road crossing, 143 has stopped to wait for space to open up ahead. Due to closely following CP 113 which was stopped at Toronto Yard, this was the last location where the 9000'-plus CMQ-led 143 would fit without blocking crossings.

Due to COVID-19, GO Transit operations have been a little unusual lately. Unused equipment has been stored wherever space has been available, with equipment moved around to allow for continued cleaning and maintenance. In this particular instance, GO 627 is returning to Willowbrook with a coach and a cab car to avoid speed restrictions after having set off 12 cars at Lewis Road Layover in Stoney Creek. Whenever the pandemic winds down and service builds back up, look for the opposite of moves like this one to take place.

Just having gotten a clearance for the southbound trip on the Hamilton Sub from Campbellville to Desjardins, 246 is beginning to climb through Streetsville towards Guelph Junction.

Both Wallace Avenue and the south end of the Newmarket Sub are bustling with activity as GO 561 leads train 6012 towards Parkdale. Preparations are being made for double tracking and a rail over rail grade separation at the Davenport Interlocking with CP's North Toronto Sub. This unique crossing, loomed over by the water tower at Canadian General Electric's former Ward Street Works, will be no more, and the capacity of the Newmarket Sub will be greatly increased upon completion of the projects.

With COVID-19 service reductions, there are only a few VIA trains per day. In position for some equipment heading to Union Station before a trip to Montreal or Ottawa, VIA 11 showed up. It would be heading straight through the USRC and up the Bala Sub. Having been turned on the turntable since <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=41338"> yesterday's arrival on VIA 63,</a> VIA 6437 was now leading 6454, showing VIA's great slogan in both official languages. In addition to the engines, the last 7 cars came from Montreal the day before, while the first 3 had been in Toronto. Reportedly, the two skylines, two baggage cars, two chateaux and four coaches will make up consists for Winnipeg to Churchill trains, allowing for the currently-running equipment to be cycled out for inspection and repair. This train wasted no time, only waiting momentarily for signals onto the Bala Sub, and I just barely managed to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5-8cSWviFI">catch it at Oriole.</a>

It's about -25 with no windchill at sunrise on this March Sunday morning in Hearst. The passenger train is loading for what would be one of its last trips before cancellation. Ontario Northland is preparing to build a train for the trip east. I would soon scurry over to choose a warm seat in a former CN Tempo or Santa Fe San Francisco Chief car.

VIA 63 heads for the TMC after unloading its passengers at Toronto Union Station. The push-pull consist of the main part of the train is typical of all corridor trains during the COVID-19 service reductions. <a href="https://media.viarail.ca/index.php/en/press-releases/2020/rail-extends-suspension-canadien-and-ocean"> VIA has cancelled the Canadian and Ocean</a> until November 1, in part in order to carry out extensive maintenance work on much of the long distance fleet. This necessitated a series of equipment moves, including these 7 cars on the tail end of 63 from Montreal to Toronto.

VIA 84 with 6405 and a mixture of five HEP1 and HEP2 coaches is seen just east of Peel and about to go by the rule 42 flags at mile 14 Halton Sub.

When VIA unveiled its wraps for Canada 150 in 2017, the splash of extra colour was a welcome sight across the country. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of VIA Rail Canada in 2018, the wraps were modified, as seen here. Until service reductions due to COVID-19 began, it had been a decade or more since an F59 last ran on the Milton Line. With all lines except the Lakeshore running 6 car trains, the COVID-19 pandemic has created the opportunity to see some things that would not normally take place. Seeing as the City of Mississauga has installed signs on most of the bridges on the Galt Sub, and COVID-19 is ultimately the reason for the F59 being there, I figured it would be very appropriate to catch one passing the relevant signage.
