Daily intermodal train Z11251 (Vancouver Intermodal Terminal-Brampton Intermodal Terminal) rolls through the curve east of Spruce Grove just before noon on a chilly but bright Saturday morning. Up front are CN 3403 and EMDX 7206, assisted by tail end DPU CN 3041 (train number six in two hours on the busy Edson sub west of Edmonton).

CN 3838 and CP 8732 lead M31151 (Walker Yard-Thornton Yard, daily) through the curve and early fall colours west of Stony Plain. The CP unit had led into Edmonton overnight.

SD70M-2 8828 leads CN owned GECX 2038--still in GE blue even though it has been on the CN roster for almost eight years--through "Ham West" on Z14891 (Chicago Markham Yard-Toronto MacMillan Yard). From what I understand, three other ET44ACs are still running around not repainted.

While visiting Burlington for Real Rails 2025, I caught VIA's "Lumi" train set on Toronto-Windsor train No. 73. According to a Trains Newswire article covering this Venture train's introduction into service, it "“acts as a reminder of the beginning of a new era for passenger rail,” and is meant to be reminscient of the all-yellow TurboTrains that operated between Montreal and Toronto until 1982". Hmmm--I seem to recall 15-20 car weekend Rapido trains between Toronto and Montreal (and also in southwestern Ontario) behind 3 or 4 units (FP9s/FPA4s/RS18s/GP9s)--a Siemens Venture is not quite the same to me...

The winter snows are melting as CN managers evaluate a trio of C&O GP40-2s (4182, 4181, and 4184), using C630Ms 2001 (near), 2000 (far), and CN Research car 15015. The tests must have been successful, for CN ordered 268 similar units (delivered between 1974 and 1976) and eventually acquired 10 of GO Transit's 11 units. (Montreal Yard is an "educated guess" for the location; unfortunately I don't have the exact date or location of the photo.) According to the 2025 Canadian Trackside Guide, 59 GP40-2LWs and GP40-2Ws are still on the CN roster.

Cab car 2307 leads VIA No. 61 (Montreal-Toronto) at Newtonville Road...while there were some nice fall colours, unfortunately they weren't near the tracks!

A trip to Ontario for "Real Rails 2025" gave the opportunity to visit "old haunts" and capture recent changes...such as KCS 4803 and 4610 leading CPKC 236 across Milborough Line, south of Guelph Jct. Has it really been two and a half years since the CP-KCS merger?

Having originated at Sapperton (New Westminster) on CN, CPKC grain empties wait in front of the Lake Louise Station restaurant for a westbound loaded grain train (301-419) on a beautiful fall day. Unfortunately, the restaurant will be closing after the Thanksgiving weekend, having been sold to Armstrong Collective (the parent company of Rocky Mountaineer).

Hmmm, that building under construction in the background would have a great shot of westbounds for most of the day (and there's a nearby crossing for other times)--I wonder if it's going to be a condo or a rental property...

There's a reason they're called "grain drags"...G81551 struggles up the grade to Carvel behind ET44AC 3105 and mid-train DPU 3279. Doing about 15 mph with 150 loads (0 empties, 20,772 tons, 8790 feet), it's going to be a long trip to the summit of Yellowhead Pass!

A41851 from McLennan rolls slowly through the outskirts of St. Albert behind SD40-2W 5295, SD75I 5670, C44-9W 2657, and SD40-2W 5321...Soon it will end its trip over the former NAR at Dunvegan Jct and continue to CN's Walker Yard. Fall colours are peaking in the Edmonton area, unfortunately a bit muted due to dry late summer weather.

Behind two AC conversions (8332 and 3401), a 98-car sulphur train makes its way slowly through St. Albert and over the Sturgeon River. Originating in Whitecourt, S72151 will pull in to Walker Yard where the power will be cut off and the cars added to a westbound for Thornton Yard. This portion of the Sangudo sub was once part of the Canadian Northern main line to Port Mann, British Columbia (now Thornton Yard). It was relegated to a branch line when the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk Pacific lines through Yellowhead Pass were rationalized during World War I.

About 20 miles east of Regina lies the community of Balgonie, Saskatchewan. VIA No. 2, "the Canadian" breaks the stillness of a Sunday morning as it makes its east towards Broadview, Brandon and Winnipeg then eventually Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Toronto and Montreal. The 18 car train with three F units was a pretty typical summer consist at this time. Believe it or not, a second pair of passenger trains also plied these rails at the time; Nos. 109 and 110 between Winnipeg and Regina over CP rails then Regina-Saskatoon over CN lines. (Those trains replaced the full service Super Continental between Winnipeg and Saskatoon from November 15, 1981 until June 3, 1984 when the Winnipeg-Saskatoon-Edmonton-Prince Rupert "Panorama" was introduced, restoring service over CN between Saskatoon and Portage la Prairie.)

SD38-2 382 was one of two built in 1972 for BC Hydro by EMD in the U.S. (BC Hydro also received an SD38AC in 1971 and another SD38-2 in 1974--the latter is still in service on the Southern Railway of British Columbia.) On a pleasant day in the summer of 1984, we see both of the 1972 SDs leading a train past the Sperling siding in Langley--four years before BC Hydro's rail operations were sold to Itel (and later the Washington Group).

I have the impression that CP's 20 Trainmasters were the "units that never quite fit in" to CP's 1950s and 1960s roster. Built in 1956, the 8901 was originally equipped with steam generators for passenger service and ran long hood forward. By the late 1960s, it was one of several H-24-66 units demoted to yard and transfer service at locations across the system including Toronto and Montreal. Some ended their days in hump service at Alyth. I have seen several photos of the 8901 in the Montreal area in 1968, 1969 and 1970--perhaps another one of our members and comment on how long Trainmasters were in Montreal and which assignments. (I would guess transfers to Hochelaga and the Port of Montreal but that's my speculation.)

No. 301, the morning Dayliner from Calgary, crosses the North Saskatchewan River at mid-day on its way to CP's downtown Edmonton station. While CP no longer uses this bridge, from mid-May-Thanksgiving you can ride the Edmonton Radial Railway Society's streetcar between downtown and Strathcona (location of the car barn) over the High Level Bridge.

When this photo was taken, the sun was setting on the Northern Alberta Railways--both literally and figuratively. I don't have any background on the photo and can't nail down the date or specific train ID. But I do know that the NAR became the CN Peace River Division on 1 January 1981 (it previously had been jointly owned by CN and CP). The NAR's 10 GP9s entered service in 1958 and would be renumbered to CN 4602-4611 after the acquisition. For the record, the units in the photo are 206, 205, and 211 (the latter having been rebuilt from unit 202 after a head-on collision at Carbondale in November 1959).
