Caption: VIA 690 has wyed its train and is gliding past the Hudson Bay Railway engine terminal and yard in The Pas, MB on another beautiful but frigid morning. I have yet to count all the different HBR locomotives I captured during my two-day stay in The Pas but the number is around twenty! On this storage track next to the mainline, a rather new HBRY 6001 leads a line of new and old HBR power that is all shut down, and waiting for their turn to go to work. To the left of the frame is the diesel shop, roundhouse, & shop tracks, and behind me is the HBR H.Q. office building.

That is a lot of big power in storage.
What locomotives did they pick up?
Paul, what did you for the rest of the day after taking these interesting pictures ? If you stayed in The Pas overnight, was the motel near to the station ? Am assuming the VIA train was closed up until shortly before departure time for Churchill, so were there was restaurant nearby ? Didn’t realize that HBR had this amount of power, very interesting.

Hi John, Lots of pics to share from this most recent trip. I was up before sunrise both days in The Pas to maximize my time outdoors with the clear skies & brilliant sunshine. My hotel, the Anderson Inn, was about a mile from the downtown station. The early morning walk into town both days help me get my steps in (average 15,800 per day), and also worked up a hearty appetite for breakfast at one of the local restaurants.

As in Churchill, I spent an hour or so outside in The Pas at the station, in the yards, or around the HBR complexes taking photos before going into the restaurant at the downtown Wescana Inn for breakfast, a hot chocolate, or just to sit and warm up. More time outdoors taking pics and walking around the town, then back to the Wescana for lunch.
Spending the entire day in town allowed me to capture different views of various locations as the sun crossed the sky.
Both Churchill and The Pas have sufficient infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, stores) to facilitate a full day of sightseeing, photo taking, and otherwise exploring these neat little northern towns.
And yes, HBR has a tremendous amount of power and rolling stock situated at their yard, shops, and near the station. Lots to see here!
