Awaiting the arrival of the crew for the 17:45 departure, the usual ubiquitous pair of ex CP Rail Budds is the equipment for Sunday only VIA Rail train #189

   at Havelock *, August 4, 1986 Kodachrome by S.Danko.

   Interesting: Havelock Budd's canceled September 6, 1982; restored June 3, 1985, canceled January 14, 1990.

   * Station construction by CPR commenced 1914, interrupted by WWI, completed 1929.

Completed in August 1884 the Ontario & Quebec Railway (Perth to North Toronto) subsequently signed a lease agreement that expires in 2883.

The 999 year leases allows the CPR absolute and complete control of the O & Q assets confirmed per a 1980 era court ruling as a result of legal action by some minority O & Q shareholders.

The lease agreement, along with other lease agreements with the Toronto Grey & Bruce, Credit Valley Railway and the West Ontario Pacific Railway (WORP) (leased to the O & Q in 1883), which connected the Credit Valley in Woodstock to Windsor and the US border, formed major components of the CPR network in southern Ontario.

The January 14, 1990 cessation of Havelock Sub passenger service, CP Rail issued a new employee time table, the following station names [were] removed from the Havelock Subdivision: Indian River; Manvers, Burketon, Dagma, Locust Hill, and Tapscott. (per UCRS Newsletter February 1990). And the Havelock Sub speed limit reduced to a maximum 30 m.p.h.

And the vehicles: all American iron: at left the ever popular Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan ( likely a GM Canada Oshawa build) , Chevy pickup, GMC Pick up, and a brown Chrysler Newport sedan.

  1. Great capture of a bygone era ! Enjoyed the caption too.

  2. Nice info! it feels so strange that lines like CP’s North Toronto Sub are in reality O&Q lines…

  3. And what about the Toronto Grey and Bruce Railway? from approx Weston to Bolton is former TG&B. The CPR in Ontario really is an amalgamation of many many small railways into one larger component that wasn’t even completed on paper until well into the 20′th century as alluded by Steve’s caption. I wonder if the minority Ontario & Quebec shareholders still exist.

  4. And then a small section of the OBRY from Melville Jct to Orangeville is also TG&B :)
