About awmooney
Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

![Back in the days of #327 and #328, the NS autoparts trains, rumbling back and forth down the Grimsby Sub as part of their journey between Talbotville, ON and Buffalo, NY, I saw a heck of a lot of variety. These trains used to run with almost anything, it appeared. Mostly combinations of NS and CP power, but there were some exceptions. This day, the last of June 2005, saw my favourite leader. One of the last two original C&NW units of this road that had been taken over by UP is heading up this train by Grimsby's little kiosk station. The 8646 and its only other still unlettered to UP rep, #8701, were not repainted until 2018. I don't know where they are now, but presumably stored someplace on the UP system.
Power seen in this shot has UP 9621 following the classic C&NW.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2005-6-CNW-Grimsby...-flaw-sharp-200x150.jpg)

Followed the train all the way to Cartier, where I think they called it a day. ![Power that had brought a train down from Goderich is seen moving around the yard. From the back to the front (as it entered Stratford) is CEFX 6537, RLK 4001, 1401 and GEXR 4046. This is usually a grubby time of the year for shooting, but as of mid-March, although melting, there was still a fair bit of snow on the ground.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2003-3-CEFX-Stratford-ON-200x150.jpg)

![Curse the lousy weather!! I do realize it is just the imagination that says 'good train run on lousy days' but many times I really wonder.....On this rather grubby early spring day #422 is heading for the states and is seen here crossing Young St just outside of Smithville. Power is SOO 6058, 6604, CP 5813, 5617 and 6013. All units are gone from the CP/SOO roster now except for leader, an SD60M which now toils as CP 6258.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2002-4-SOO-6058-S.-Grimsby-ON-200x150.jpg)

The tail end of this Wisconsin Central train will still be going by the station. Seen are WC 6002 (AC paint) 3014, 6614 and 6588 on what was a really nice afternoon. Destination is Sault Ste. ![The Head of the Class !! First of an illustrious series of SD40 locomotives on this railroad, CN 5000 leads a westbound on approach to Bayview Jct in the late afternoon sun of a mild November day. This unit was built in September of 1967 and held on almost to the bitter end. There are none left on the once 241 strong on the CN roster and this unit was one of the last dozen to be retired. Don't really know, but I assume it was scrapped.
Seeing this was a surprise, as I thought it was based out West. Second unit is 5281.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/1999-11-CN-5000-Bayview-E.-200x150.jpg)

![I remember this as a blistering hot day as I wandered the area on the day of the OVR summer picnic. Besides the special bringing the employees this far out from North Bay on a train ride, it was nice to see a few CP freights along a line which has now been removed east of here, and the CP freights are no more. The high summer sun (noonish) made this image difficult with all that shadow on the station. Power on this eastbound is CP 5989 and 9008. I'm wondering if and when this old building was razed. ![I guess you could say it was a typical non-descript day in December. A blank grey sky had me looking for a location to shoot trains that at least had some 'feeling' to it. So I wandered over to CN Iron Bridge (mile 7.7) to await #328 which I knew was on the way to Buffalo that morning. It has today three CPs on the head end; CP 5600, 5422 and 5678. The yellow loco was still in its previous coat as GATX 2000 from when it toiled as a leased unit on the D&H.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/1996-12-Seaway-200x150.jpg)

![Some action in the old Montrose yard in Niagara Falls on a beautiful afternoon. Eastbound train has just come in and the power has been broken up. First two are CP 1834 and 4220, with 1859 and 1849 left with train. I really do not see many photos from this yard. Nothing left there now, except perhaps the old office. At least it was there a few years ago. The only traffic thru these days is the Chippawa local, which is based out of Welland Yard.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/1995-10-CP-1834-200x150.jpg)

![Hot day in July. Trillium Railway MLW S-13 #110 switches in Merritton where the TRRY meets (and crosses) the CN Grimsby sub at mile 9:49. The old CN yard at this location had fallen into disuse by this time as north end St. Catharines business had pretty much dried up. The 110 was retired in 2021. I believe that is employee Marcel Lemal by the switch stand. He has retired as well. :o)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/005-200x150.jpg)

![The Alberta Prairie railroad is obviously more than just tourist excursions. In this photograph we see a local returning from Botha to Stettler with APXX 6347 and 7438 up front. The image was shot from alongside Hwy 12 which parallels the line for a few miles. Lighting was tough as it was very early morning.
I am quite sure the 7438 is one of those old Conrail engines I used to see when wandering around Niagara many years ago. The CTG states it began life on the NYC and the lead unit 6347 was once the property of the Southern Pacific. ![Fall is winding down rapidly. Rather than regret being away for a fairly long vacation I would rather say I wish the fall season was longer in order to catch some colour out there before it is gone. But I rather missed most of the colour this year so instead digging up a shot from 5 years back that is of my recent favourites. This is OSR 1401 and 1400 heading for Woodstock on a nice mid-October day. The OSR has attracted most everyone on this group who happens to live within a hundred miles or so of the operation. It is a treat for those who tire of CN and CP.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/DSC_3659-200x150.jpg)

![Due to popular requests...well, actually just one viewer...:o)....here is a closer view of one track of the collection in Eastend. One can see RPCX 6311, steam jenny 15475, RPCX #3 (former CP?) baggage 9653, two coaches in old CN colours, a VIA, a baggage car 9646 (still lettered Bluewater NRHS), coach 9654 and what looks like a combine, a club galley and coach car (in old CN colour) at the end. Obviously I should have done a lot more wandering but rather relied on shots from afar that unfortunately were not sharp enough to pick up some of the numbers. Quite the Eastend listing in the CTG 2023 and I wouldn't be surprised if more cars have been added since the book was published. The CTG states RPCX is reporting marks of Railroad Passenger Car Numbering Bureau, Inc.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/DSC_5579-200x150.jpg)

![Quite the collection of locomotives and rolling stock to be found at Eastend, a village not far from the US border in SW Saskatchewan. Apparently the owner wants to get a tourist train up and running. Part of the collection includes former VIA 6304 and 6311, (x-CN/VIA 6509, 6529) KJRY 1750, 1761 (x-AC,VIA) and steam jenny RPCX 15475 along with an impressive set of rolling stock. The outfit, to operate under the name Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, is not yet up and running as far as I know. My main concern is where they will get the riders from. The area is sparsely populated and rather a long way from anything.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/DSC_5565-200x150.jpg)

Eastbound #50 with switchers CP 8144, 8145, 8164 and 8150 meets westward CP 5520 and 5552 just to the east of the Guelph Jct station. ![Yes, even some of these fledgling railroads feel the need to celebrate their beginning by hosting a "Last Spike" ceremony. And this is what we see taking place at the Port Colborne Harbour Railway (now GIO) opening ceremonies back in 1997. Photographers abound, as well as a microphone to record the last 'John Henry' whack to signal the railroad is open for business. On the left in the striped t-shirt is RP'er Greg Smith, flanked by brother and fellow RP'er Rob on the right and father Larry on the left; both intent on documenting this scene for posterity.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/PCHR-Last-Spike-edited-EDIT-200x150.jpg)

![It might have been a cold snowy day, but still good enough to go out and see what is happening on the railroads. Upon arriving at Fort Erie it was nice to see a pair of those old venerable N&W locomotives parked out front of the CN diesel shop. Grabbed a shot of them from the roadway, playing it safe in slippery conditions by not crossing the tracks. These F7A units, N&W 3660 and 3725 were both from the former Wabash stable at one time, and were a familiar sight around Fort Erie back in those days. Both were built circa 1950. Activity at the diesel shop ceased back around 1989 as CN closed down the shop and pulled up most of the track. Currently this old repair facility is home to a fledgling railroad museum.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/NW-3660-FE13-200x150.jpg)
