In something of a ‘BEFORE & AFTER’ staging, CN SW1200RS 7303 and SW1200RSm 7104 portray Pte. St. Charles’ effort to create a super switcher or ‘SWEEP’; SWitcher + gEEP. Between 1985 and 1987 CN’s rebuild facility created a total of eight (CN 7100 – 7107) SWEEP’s by combining a SW1200 frame cab and prime mover with the hood, main generator, cooling fans and traction motor blowers from donor GP9’s. All were sold to subsidiary CANAC in February 2000. Some of the SWEEP’s were subsequently conveyed to shortlines/industrial customers and remain in service to this day. CN 7104 was originally constructed as CN 1248 in 1956.
