Caption: While CP follows the Thompson River downstream from Savona to Lytton exclusively along the left bank, CN switches sides four times to avoid difficult sandy slopes, twice at Walhachin and twice just upstream of Ashcroft, with the third crossing seen here on Tuesday 1987-06-02 hosting a westward coal train powered by CN 5339 + 5334, and the caboose of a westward CP sulphur train in the foreground and midtrain remotes barely visible in the distance. The fourth CN crossing of the river is just beyond the upper left of this view.
The area on the left has since been extensively developed into the Ashcroft Terminal inland logistics port with access to each of the mainline railways.
This view is a simple turn-around from my CP sulphur train post of one week ago.

It’s a tough call. Since I was small, both railroads, as they enter the mountains, is a feast for the eyes with the stark change from parkland/prairie to mountains. On the other hand, Kamloops to the coast is just as tasty for the oculars. Near desert at Kamloops, changing to ultra green rain forest south of Boston Bar to Hope. With twice the railroad pleasure in the canyon.
