Caption: At the start of the 2024 you'd be hard pressed to believe this rail line in the northwestern corner of Canada's "Railway City" was going to be brought back into service, with full on trees growing out of the disintegrating railway ties. It has taken over six months of rehabilitation work on this 2 mile stretch of track that has been out of service ever since Ford closed their plant well over a decade ago. The automatic grade crossings, although left in place had even lost most of they're signals. But on October 3rd, 2024 we see GIO Rail shoving a second cut of storage cars into the old Southwold Yard with their recently arrived LDSX 2001 and LDSX 2003. Track machinery can be seen left and right as many of the old ties lay trackside (some with date nails dating as far back as 1947), a testament to the amount of work it's taken to return this line to service. There is still much work to be done as it doesn't appear GIO is done with their work in St. Thomas, Ontario.

Nice capture David! Twas interesting to this observer and successful for GIO as they transferred a multitude of rail cars from CN’s St Thomas Yard, over the high trestle, to the former Southwold Yard. A major project indeed and seemingly for car storage albeit handy.
Amazing. My last train here was in 2006, and back then this was a mainline!

Awesome shot! I’m very glad that someone was out to photograph this historic move.
