Its one of those hazy foggy mornings we see so often due to the winds off the lake. The local way freight with CN 4594 and 4595 is paused in front of old Merritton station as the eastbound morning AMTK slides by. That is, according to my map, Merritt St bridge in the background.  I've always referred to it as Hartzel Rd but apparently it changes names along the way. If St. Catharines cannot screw your mind up with their street layout, they'll slam dunk you with their road names.
Merritton station burned down in 1994. I don't recall the cause, but suspect it was arson.

  1. If you want to count when it goes into Thorold, this street changes names a total of four times in just under 6km. Gotta love it.

  2. Hmmm….1994 saw the loss of both the Grimsby and Merriton stations. Grimsby was electrical, but if memory serves me correct I believe Merritin was ‘suspicious’. Still, great photo Arnold. Belated birthday greetings to you….!

  3. Thanks, Todd. We do NOT count BDs here. I can find other ways to scare myself.

  4. I can’t help but note the grade to fit under the bridge. Was this before the infamous doublestack incident where they had to lower the tracks to clear ?

  5. Indeed. The double stack incident happened in the late 90’s, and the grade change happened in 01. By then stack traffic dried up on the Grimsby, and the bridge was replaced in 07.

  6. Cn train 154 ran for a couple years in the 2000′s and was on again off again since the 80′s.

    Now that there is doublestack on 421/422 it made it all worthwhile, all that bother.
