Railpictures.ca - Marcus W Stevens Photo: A long time favourite railfan town for me, Paris is on the top of my list of places I wish I could have seen in its prime railroad days. There was once several railroads that ran through town with CN also running two branchlines. One to Stratford and the other the Brantford by-pass. The years have claimed all the lines other then CN’s mainline. Sadly the beautiful station here was razed years ago as well. CN cowl units were definitely a highlight for me and are dearly missed in these GEVO days. I am standing just east of the onetime junction, near the station site as an eastbound, possibly 434 or 410 leans into the curve under dying light with several units now long off the roster. I lived in Haldimand-Norfolk for years, and still remember to this day coming to Paris for the first time. That area where the bypass was, and still is one of my favourite spots to shoot. Although, back some 30 plus years ago, the bypass was still used as a siding. This portion used to run all the way through Harrisburg. Last time I was in Paris, there was still a section of rails in place on the east side of Grand River St. North at Silver Street (although now heavily grown in with trees, brush, etc). Nonetheless, the level crossing for the bypass was still in existence (can’t remember the year it was removed), with the still gate protected level crossing of the Dundas Sub. With the CTC signals easily visible in either direction, how busy the Dundas Sub is with its traffic and the local working out of Brantford to London and back….makes it still today a great place to venture to!
