When we were living in the Vancouver area, I really enjoyed this spot in New Westminster. It was a packed scene. The train line through here is super busy with numerous transfer trains passing through including BNSF, CPKC, CN and SRY. On a beautiful Vancouver summer day, a BNSF transfer train from Thornton Yard in Surrey is heading to SRY's Trapp Yard. I saw this train from the Skytrain about to cross the Fraser River but had no idea whether it was going north or south on the other side of the river. Spending time with family, and my wife meeting with an old colleague, I heard bells ringing and sure enough it was the BNSF transfer heading through. We were steps from the tracks so I naturally brought my camera. I can't stop talking about this place. Stuff for the family and numerous trains right there. There's a boardwalk, park, and children's play area adjacent to the tracks. This was the first of three SB trains I caught, including SRY and CN to follow.

  1. Nice spot. I’d like to see the SRY shot!

  2. I’m planning on posting the SRY and CN shots in time. This area is kind of like a bottleneck for trains. The lines follow and “H” pattern with the Fraser River in the middle. It is a single track swing bridge over the river which causes the bottleneck. Non-stop trains!
