If I recall, the long hood was the “front” on those units. That’s a bit odd with the low short hood.
Yes, you are correct, the long hood is the front end of these units. There is a small “F” on the running boards at the long hood end. If I recall correctly, EMD wanted extra for the high hood option that Norfolk and Western refused to pay.
The second NW unit behind, 1625, is a SD40-2 with a high short hood.
With two NW units together – were these both leased, or was there some kind of run-through arrangement with NW for something?
If I recall, we had a bunch of these units leased at that time. Most had high short hoods. CP later bought a few of those & boarded over the windows.
I seem to remember walking back through our power for some reason & coming across one of the units with low short hood & long hood control setup. I’d never seen that before.
Dual clasp brakes must’ve been fun for the shop forces.
Didn’t these have dual control stands? Or only one.
The ones I recall seeing had single control stands.
Even in the high hood ones?
