Daily FAST VIA Rail #1 on the CN Newmarket, with only weeks remaining *, May 12, 1979 Kodachrome by S.Danko
Interesting
Early VIA Rail maintained CP Rail's daily FAST service,
albeit slowed by the re-routing onto CN Newmarket (Union to CN Boyne to CP Rail Reynolds)
and the divergent route into Winnipeg (to access the ex CNorR Winnipeg station),
VIA's April 1979 Canadian: Toronto to Banff, 50:10 (two nights) and 67:35 to Vancouver (three nights).
[ CP Rail circa 1975 The Canadian timekeeping was FAST, with first generation aging F's, 47:30 Toronto to Banff and 64:55 to Vancouver ].
Noteworthy * The June 17, 1979 timetable:
re-routed the daily VIA #1 & 2 CANADIAN exclusively onto CP RAIL to /from Montreal.
re- routed daily VIA trains #3 & 4 SUPER CONTINENTAL exclusively on CN to /from Toronto.
VIA trains # 1 & 2, # 3 & 4: The June 17 1979 re-routings were only in place until June 1982 when the SUPER CONTINENTAL trains # 3 & 4 disappeared completely, replaced by 10 regional daily / tri weekly trains.
