With GIO departing east with 25 cars in tow, they're seen passing the Cando switching operation at Formet Industries, with SW1200 CCGX 1329 (nee CN) working the plant. GIO began humbly, with Very short trains in the beginning but they have sure proved everyone they can bring the business. Soon, not far from here, construction will begin on a $20 million rail spur, including two overpasses for the Volkswagen battery plant. The contract was awarded on Thursday and construction begins THIS month (April 2024). With the spur on the CN side of the Cayuga, it means CN will likely haul all the traffic, but it's not known who will get the switching contract for the plant. Surely there will be a ton of interest from local companies, such as Cando pictured, along with many other local switching contract operators.

  1. Interesting shot Steve

  2. Great catch! I’ve never been that luck when I’m there.

  3. Nice shot ! Always encouraging to hear about new traffic growth. What sort of rail traffic would a battery plant generate ?

  4. I am honestly not sure. Volkswagon has plants in Chattanooga and Mexico so the batteries will be going quite a distance. The new VW plant for Scout is going in South Carolina and batteries are being made in St Thomas for all.

Audi is looking to land a plant in North America being VW owned and St Thomas could get it too. It’d still undecided but we are in the running.

Marcus I shot GIO meeting OSR too a few minutes earlier :)

  5. Thanks for the info. It will be interesting to see how this all develops.
