Caption: A CN bulkhead flatcar loaded with brand new Champion road graders is seen at the CN yard in Stratford, Ontario on February 6, 1994. Presumably, it will eventually be lifted by either CN 421 or 422 to continue its journey. The new equipment was brought down from Goderich via the Goderich-Exeter Railway after being lifted from the Champion Road Machinery plant in the town.
In 1997 Volvo had paid $173-million to take over Champion Road Machinery. However, in 2008 it was announced they were going to close the road grader plant by 2010, eliminating 500 jobs, and consolidating its road machinery operations in Pennsylvania. At the time, Volvo had said this move was made to improve competitiveness and profitability while reducing exchange rate fluctuations as our Canadian dollar had risen incredibly high.
