Caption: A pair of C&O GP30s lead a westbound freight off NYC's Fort Erie Branch and past WX Tower in this undated shot taken sometime between 1962 (delivery of C&O's GP30s) and January 1973 (opening of the "new" Welland Canal tunnel). This appears to be either C&O 35 or 37 which handled freight from Erie Lackawanna and Buffalo Creek connections at East Buffalo to Detroit, with connections at St. Thomas for Sarnia and Sagninaw, MI as well as at Detroit for Ludington, MI and Chicago. In the 1960s, C&O ran up to five trains in each direction, most going to Niagara Falls, NY and connecting lines such as the Lehigh Valley.
