By 1978 its Conrail!
Love the person walking their kid to see the derailment. How times have changed
I knew there was another photo of this on the site somewhere, but man I could not find it with the search… I ended up having to scroll through the pages of Mr. Mooney’s photos, one at a time. Here it is, from page 79(!):

I guess C&O isn’t off the table as the operator here, but the cars in the wreck are all BN constituent roads, IC/ICG, and Soo Line, suggesting a Chicago connection which does seem more like Conrail bridge traffic. A bunch of the CASO trains ran to/from Elkhart yard in Indiana, and BN had some run-through traffic to Elkhart to bypass Chicago.
In my feeble Google searching I did find more images of this wreck, in a gallery on another site, here:

THANKS, Jakob. I kept thinking I had posted something before but it wouldn’t come up thru search. It is to the point now that I cannot recall some of what I have posted. Too many images, plus deteriorating memory cells, I guess. I really appreciate your effort in helping me out.
Great shot. Nice capture of the Linemen belted in, most likely pulling up and securing broken line wires.
So much wow here
