Classic Canadian Budd Park Car interior
On my recent Toronto, Jasper, Prince George, Prince Rupert trip, I took VIA #5 The Skeena November 22 and 23 from Jasper to Prince Rupert. The consist (after removing baggage car VIA 8613 due to a bad wheel) was VIA 6455, VIA 8102 coach, and VIA 8707 Kokanee Park.
The interior of Kokanee Park was a spectacular trip back to the original CP Canadian days with its pastel green colours and individual arm chairs in the bullet lounge area.
On the return trip on VIA 006 The Skeena November 25th, I was the only passenger on the train for the entire day from Prince George to Jasper. It was like riding in my own private rail car! :-)
If they are viewing and reading this, I'd like to send thanks out to VIA Service Manager Ron, and VIA locomotive engineer Dan for their kindness and patience toward me during all four days of this journey. They made a great trip even better!

  1. And you couldn’t find a young lady to go along for the ride? Geez…….

  2. When all your travel photo’s are added up and their corresponding captions, it very well seems you are having a terrific time traveling back and forth across the country. All the best to you this festive season Paul. :-)

  3. AWM Maybe a young lady will join me some time down the road, but for now it’s just me and my cameras. :-)
Extra 5610 West I’m very fortunate to be able jump on a train just about any time I feel like it and go north, south, east, or west. Whether it’s The Canadian, The Hudson Bay, The Skeena, or the Ocean, I seem to enjoy each journey more and more, no matter how many times I take the same route.
They are the same trip every time, but they are completely different every time. :-)
Best wishes for a wonderful 2024.

  4. What an adventure Paul! Happy railfanning and riding in 2024!

  5. Yeah, the lad is spoiled, isn’t he, Ken. :o )

  6. The park cars changed a lot since 1982,.

  7. Yes they sure have Pierre. It’s interesting to note that the emergency brake valve is located under the lid of the triangle table to the left of the rear door.

  8. Great view of my most favourite seat in a Park car,on the left side at the end with counter space to rest my camera and hold my drink (Cuba Libre). Paul, before the Park cars used on the Canadian were renovated, when leaving Toronto, for train no.1’s back up move from the Newmarket Sub to the York Sub at Snider, the conductor would make his way back through the train to the Park car, open up the lid to the triangle table to have access to the tail end brake valve for this backup move, politely temporarily evicting whoever was sitting in the rear seat on the right hand side. Don’t know if this is still the situation with today’s no.1. Thanks for sharing, John

  9. Thanks John. Yes, it is the same procedure in 2024. A pilot comes back to the Park car and guides the train as it backs through CN Snider. I have a photo of this scene that I will try to post.
