<b<A meeting of Nanticoke steel trains. Three of Canadian Pacific's MLW C424s lead the loaded train north at CN Garnet, while an A-B-A set of Canadian National GMD F7s wait in the yard to proceed south to Stelco's Lake Erie Works with empties. This scene was captured as the operation was switched between CN and CP, which occurred every so many weeks.

Per John Eull's article "The History of the Nanticoke Steel Trains - Part 2" in The Ontarian, CP's steel train was in its final year of operation before being 100% handled by CN. Prior to May 20, 1986, the train had operated Hamilton - Brantford - Waterford - Simcoe - Garnet - Nanticoke utilizing the TH&B Waterford Sub, LE&N Simcoe Sub, CN Cayuga and Hagersville Subs. A landslide at Cainsville during the evening of May 20 severed the line, which with a twelve million dollar price tag for repairs, resulted in the line being abandoned. A new route was established, operating Hamilton - Welland - Hagersville - Garnet - Nanticoke using the TH&B Welland Sub, and CN's CASO and Hagersville Subs.

The shared operation of the train between CN and CP ceased on March 22, 1987, with CN operating the train until cancellation in the fall of 1989.

  1. A well planned meet. Great photo.

  2. Great meet shot at the south end of Garnet!

  3. Now that’s an awesome meet!

  4. This is one amazing shot. I wish Bruce was here to see our comments, but perhaps he’s watching from somewhere up there :) I’ve never seen a meet shot of two steel trains…

BTW since Jacob wrote the caption based on John’s article in TH&B’s Ontarion, it should be noted for the young folks that CN/RLHH ran another steel train from about 2000 to 2010.. which was also outlined in the article in greater detail.

Anyone can order a copy of the great Steel Train article by Mr. Eull, to get yours, print, fill out, and mail/email this form, you want Volume 17 number 2 (and number 1 for part one)

    Form here:

For the CN/RLHH Steel train , a number of shots posted on this site too:

  5. Per Lance Brown, the cycle of “The Nanticoke” as it was called on the TH&B, and “725″ as it was known to CN was four weeks on the TH&B, and six weeks on CN.
