Caption: Just over a year after the Norfolk & Western assumed control of the Wabash, Extra 668 west rumbles past the Canada Packers/Shur Gain facility behind a set of Canadian-built GMD F7s. Note the CN flatbed trailer loaded on the CN flatcar behind the power. The semaphore signals protected movements at Welland Junction, east of the canal, and presently the site of GIO customer Verbio. In another few hundred feet, the locomotives will cross the former diamond with the Niagara, St. Catharines & Toronto Railway.

Very cool to see John, the SHUR GAIN (later NUTRITE ?) factory had a spur off the Cayuga sub, plant came down in the late 80s, and was not running for some years before that, …thanks for sharing…MIKE
Is this the lot Trillium had planned to build an engine house? (which clearly didn’t happen, as it was built in the wye at Feeder)
It seems to be used for railway though, all ballasted, lots of ballast..
Also John this is outstanding. What grabs me other than the obvious is the engine room lights are all just.. shining in the photo I’ve stood inside units like this a number of times (running too) and it’s quite the place to be.
Well done, John. Note the interlocking rods for the Welland Jct. semaphore. In other shots the rods can be seen running across bridge 17 at track level. I am wondering though, how would the rods be connected across the lift span?
Mike, you may be able to confirm this. It appeared based on old aerial images that there was the siding at Shur Gain, but also one parallel to the Cayuga main on the north side. Extra capacity for the facility maybe?
Steve, you’re correct, this was the potential engine house site.
Hello Jacob, your statement on the siding plus north side track sounds right going from memory, if I dig up some photos in that area I will send them to you…Cheers MIKE
I don’t believe that could be a CN flatbed trailer, it’s likely XTRZ.
