Caption: On July 5, 1975 Canadian Pacific FP7 locomotive No. 4062, the third locomotive of westbound Extra 4088 caught fire and was disconnected from the train near mileage 78.5, about two miles east of Franz, Ontario. A Ministry of Natural Resources forest fire suppression crew (including the photographer) was dispatched from Wawa to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent forest.

Running a little hot!!
Incredible shot!
I recall seeing that photo in on of the Trains magazine back in 1975 or 76. I framed the photo and caption at the time.
Yes Paul, the head-on photo of 4062 in flames appeared in the March 1976 edition of “Trains Magazine”
Thanks for confirming that David. I still have the cutout photo and caption in my files!
I see there was a rail changing crew working that portion of the subdivision at the time (tie plates and rail laid out).
So this is what a “Hotshot” looks like!
The caption on that 1975 Train Mag full page photo read something like
“Fire Fighters Fight Flaming F at Franz ”

I just went to my basement archives and found the photo and caption from the March 1976 Trains Magazine …..
“Firefighters fly to Franz, save forest but not F”
Yes, that’s right Paul. I still have a few copies of the magazine. I remember going around to newsstands buying up copies so I could give them to friends and family members.
Great photo. Great memories. I was working at CN on the ‘West End’ around Oba & Hornepayne when that incident occurred. Thanks for posting!
This should be a tee shirt.
Well do I remember that photo in Trains. It was particularly effective for me, then an engine cleaner (wiper) at the CP roundhouse in Victoria, as a reminder of the importance of ensuring enginerooms were kept clean of flammable spills.
A photo that has been memed frequently!
Chilling photo….yet most widely used somehow as for popular memes on social media. Happy you shared your photo….a reminder of the dangers that can sometimes happen while working on the road.
