A view of the Canadian Pacific Railway 'Upper Yard' at Guelph taken from the Heffernan Street footbridge shows various pieces of MoW service rolling stock behind the unique freight shed that served the Royal City until a fire in May 1991. American crane CPR 414230 can be seen just above caboose 434816, which had been used a few months earlier during February as a pile driver (note parts on car behind) to repair timbers on the wooden trestle at mile 29.75 Goderich Sub. Note removed bridge timbers in gondola. Per Bruce Lowe images taken during the bridge work, all equipment other than what is on the near track has remained in the yard since the winter months.Keith Hansen Photo, James Hull Collection.

  1. That is a great photo capturing such a variety of CP’s Service Equipment from the era.
CP 414230 is (was) an American model 7040 DH (diesel driven hydraulic traction & swing) locomotive crane, serial number L-3984, built in 1972. It was delivered new to CP in November of that year.
It was constructed for general hoisting, bucket work, magnet work, and pile driving.
It was originally equipped with a GM 6-71 Detroit Diesel producing 183 h.p. @ 1600 rpm. It had a 40 foot main boom with a 10 foot center section, and a 25KW magnet generator. It was also equipped with an engine warning system (low oil pressure/high engine temp. alarm), Timken trucks, track sanders, and, a fully enclosed insulated operators cab.
CP 414230 was used as a trade-in by CP on their new ERS PowERStick articulated boom crane built in 1996 (originally numbered CP 414230 but renumbered CP 414233). It was scrapped in November of 2012.
