Caption: West of Kamloops, CP follows the south shore of Kamloops Lake to Savona, then starts a significant upgrade along the Thompson River to Walhachin. In earlier years, this was a helper grade with daunting steeper sections instead of today’s steady climb. On Sunday 1980-06-08 at 1107 PDT, a westbound with SD40-2s 5790 + 5661 + 5666 (one with wide stripes and two with narrow ones, and all with full-height multimarks) is working hard at mileage 28.5 with three more miles to Walhachin.
In the distance near the tail end, evidence of the lower older grade can be seen, and on the other side of the river is the CN Ashcroft sub.
