Caption: It's 12 noon on March 14, 2023 in Churchill, MB. The sky is clear, the sun is bright, but it's -27C feeling like -36C!!! But, on the bright side, it's warmer than my arrival earlier in the morning at 08:30 when it was -31C feeling like -43C!!! VIA 693's consist is parked in front of the stately station building with all the vestibule doors closed. No connection to wayside power for the equipment today as both locomotives have been left running to stay warm and ready for departure later in the day as VIA 690 to The Pas. My entire day in Churchill alternated from 1/2 an hour outside taking photos, to 1/2 an hour in a restaurant, or the community center, or a store, then back out again for more pics. With the light breeze, and ice crystals in the air it was a challenging, but very enjoyable day walking around the station, yard, and town. I'm so glad I have been able to experience this trip and locations in both summer and winter, and would highly recommend the adventure to everyone. :-)

This trip to Churchill, like my one in August of last year was a wonderful journey. I met several interesting people, and a nice young family of five going up for a week of fun, adventure, sightseeing, and the Northern lights! We also had a fabulous crew with Denis, Jan, and Denis. Yep, two crew named Denis!
Walking the platform the snow would have had that distinctive -25 crunch.
Such a nice picture ! So reminiscent of all the long gone passenger trains and stations on the former Canadian Northern lines throughout the Prairies. Much appreciate your intrepid journey and showing us what it’s like in Churchill in the dead of winter. Grateful that you had sunshine and blue skies, it would be something else in a blizzard ! Well John, having experienced the journey in both summer and winter climates, I find it difficult to decide which season is better for the trip. Churchill has so much to offer year round for those adventurous enough to make the trip.
While my recent trip had wonderful winter weather, with bright sunshine and clear blue skies, it was somewhat challenging to be out in -30C weather for extended periods of time. Mind you I was only walking around the town and railway property taking pictures. For others enjoying the various excursions and activities available it might be suitable.
My summer visit to the town was much more enjoyable as I had almost identical skies & sunshine, but the August temperatures of +17C were much more ‘user friendly’ for extended hours outside enjoying all there was to be found.
