Yeah, a long time ago. For this budding curmudgeon, it was the beginning of the best of times trackside. And more nostalgic since I have come to realize how dull so many freight moves are these days. In this shot taken hillside at the Hamilton High Level bridge (when there was still hassle-free parking) we see CP SD-40s 5521 and 5535 with mixed freight. That and the extra flags suggests to me this was the mid to late afternoon Toronto to Hamilton (and return) daily "Starlite". Looks to be a beautiful day.

  1. Ya know, this train looked familiar. A quick search revealed you caught it coming down the former Goderich Sub (now Hamilton sub) in this shot; http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=31877

The time of day suggested the Starlite but the route down from Guelph Jct was odd. Maybe a detour ? Check out the comments. Regardless, this one’s a classic. :-)

  2. Nice angle for this scene.

  3. Aitch: Heck, I didn’t even recall posting the previous image you are referring to. But yes, you are absolutely correct.
This was indeed a strange move. I took a stab at it being the Starlite, but no; it isn’t. Now I have no clue. :o ) THANKS

  4. It’s either an Aberdeen Turn (the old east pool version, not the 90s assignment) or a detour to Toronto via Hamilton & CN joint section. As noted in the earlier photo’s comments, I don’t recall those wooden Livingston crates ever going to Hamilton.
